Yes—Ford built a one-off Mustang pickup, but it is a newly surfaced concept, not a newly announced production model. The Cyber Yellow S550 fastback was converted into a ute by apprentices in Ford’s Experimental Vehicles Building Metal Shop and has joined the company’s U.S. Heritage Fleet. Ford has not released a complete technical history of the vehicle.
What is the hidden Mustang ute?
It is a real Ford-built vehicle with a pickup-style bed, rather than a rendering or an independently made conversion. Ford Authority reported on October 4, 2026, that the surviving example had joined the U.S. Heritage Fleet. The report identifies its starting point as a Cyber Yellow S550-generation Mustang fastback, modified by Ford’s Experimental Vehicles Building Metal Shop. Ford Authority’s report does not provide a full build sheet.
Why did Ford build a Mustang with a bed?
The vehicle was an apprentice-training project. The shop gave apprentices hands-on experience turning a concept into a finished vehicle; Ford Authority reports that the work involved hundreds of labor hours, without specifying an exact total. The available account does not establish that the ute was intended for production.
That purpose fits the broader role of Ford’s Heritage Fleet. Ford describes the collection as preserving significant company vehicles—including concepts, prototypes, saved projects, and production test vehicles—and as a resource for design, engineering, and education. Ford Performance’s Heritage Fleet page says selected vehicles have also appeared at public events, though access depends on specific displays.

How is it different from a regular Mustang?
| Aspect | Production Mustang | Mustang ute |
|---|---|---|
| Body configuration | Fastback coupe body | S550 fastback converted to a pickup-style ute |
| Purpose | Series-produced road car | Apprentice-training concept project |
| Status | Production model | One-off vehicle in Ford’s U.S. Heritage Fleet, according to Ford Authority’s October 4, 2026 report |
The contrast is especially sharp beside the Mustang’s launch: Ford says the original debuted at the New York World’s Fair on April 17, 1964, and that more than 420,000 were sold in its first calendar year. The ute, by contrast, is a singular preserved project, not another branch of the production lineup. Ford’s Mustang history also describes the 1963 Mustang II concept as a market-research tool for validating the forthcoming production car—an example of how a concept can serve a purpose without becoming a retail model.

The reporting describes one existing concept vehicle and does not announce a production Mustang pickup. Ford has not published the ute’s build year, powertrain, bed dimensions, or a complete technical history in the cited account, so those details should not be inferred from its appearance or donor car.
