Short answer: A 5.0L Coyote is the modern, high-output choice, but it is not a universal drop-in Bronco engine. A 302-based Windsor usually offers the least disruptive traditional V8 path, while a 351W adds torque potential with more height and important component differences. Ford’s 7.3L is a much larger alternative whose shared bellhousing pattern does not prove Bronco compatibility. Your Bronco’s exact model year, drivetrain, transmission, transfer case, intended use and registration jurisdiction must be identified before choosing an engine.
What the engine choice really decides
A Bronco V8 swap is not an engine-only purchase. The long block determines the space, control system, fuel strategy, accessory layout and much of the work required to connect the engine to the transmission, transfer case, exhaust and cooling system. A crate-engine specification can tell you displacement, architecture, rated output and reference dimensions. It cannot, by itself, prove that the engine will clear a particular Bronco’s hood, firewall, steering, front axle, crossmember or suspension.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters because Broncos were built across several generations and drivetrain configurations. A first-generation truck, a late-1970s full-size Bronco and a later model can have very different engine bays, wiring, emissions equipment and transmission choices. Treat the comparisons below as a way to narrow the engine family, not as a vehicle-specific installation recipe.
For a traditional build where serviceability and familiar parts are priorities, start with a 302-based Windsor option. Choose a 351W when its extra deck height and different components fit the vehicle and the intended power band. Choose the Coyote when modern power density, 32-valve breathing and electronic engine management justify the fabrication and integration work. Consider the 7.3L only after confirming every major packaging and driveline interface.

Ford’s published numbers: Coyote, 302 and 351W
Ford Performance lists more than one 5.0L Coyote product. The figures below must stay attached to the exact product and fuel requirement; they are not a single universal Coyote specification.
| Engine or product | Published output | Reference dimensions in Ford’s chart | What the number does and does not tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gen 4X 5.0L Coyote crate engine | 460 hp and 420 lb-ft on premium fuel | 5.0L 4V Ti-VCT chart entry: 26 in. long, 28 in. wide, 27 in. high | Manufacturer listing for the Gen 4X crate product; it does not establish Bronco clearance, mounts, transmission, wiring or emissions status. |
| 2024 Mustang GT Gen 4 Coyote crate-engine listing | 480 hp and 415 lb-ft on premium fuel | Not separately stated in the cited listing | A different product listing from the Gen 4X crate engine. Do not substitute its rating for the Gen 4X figure in a build plan. |
| 302-based Windsor crate options | Exact output depends on the selected catalog engine; the cited material does not provide one universal rating | 27.5 in. long and 20.75 in. high; width is not stated in the chart | Traditional pushrod architecture and a lower charted height than the Coyote, but the chosen crate configuration still needs vehicle-specific checks. |
| 351W-based Windsor crate options | Exact output depends on the selected catalog engine; no single rating is established here | 27.5 in. long and 23.75 in. high; width is not stated in the chart | More deck height than the charted 302 and different internal and intake requirements; not simply a tall 302. |
These dimensions come from Ford Performance’s 2020 catalog engine-swap size chart. They are reference measurements for comparison, not a promise that an engine will fit a Bronco without changes. Accessories, belt drives, intake hardware, exhaust manifolds, oil pans, mounts and measurement conventions can change the real envelope.
5.0L Coyote: the modern high-output route
What makes the Coyote different
The Coyote is a 5.0L, 32-valve, double-overhead-cam V8 with Ti-VCT. Ford’s Gen 4X product information also identifies direct and port injection. Compared with a traditional Windsor, this is a more electronically integrated engine: cam timing, injection, throttle control and sensor strategy are part of the engine-management package rather than optional add-ons.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Gen 4X crate listing gives 460 hp and 420 lb-ft with premium fuel. A separate Ford Performance listing for the 2024 Mustang GT Gen 4 engine gives 480 hp and 415 lb-ft with premium fuel. The difference is a reminder to select the exact part number first, then design the supporting systems around that product. Neither figure guarantees the same result in a Bronco, where intake and exhaust routing, calibration, fuel delivery, cooling and accessory choices can differ from the original application.
Why packaging is the first Coyote question
Ford’s chart lists the 5.0L 4V Ti-VCT engine at 26 inches long, 28 inches wide and 27 inches high. The charted 302 is 20.75 inches high, and the 351W is 23.75 inches high. That makes vertical space an early Coyote decision point. Measure the Bronco with the intended oil pan, intake, throttle body, accessories, exhaust manifolds or headers, transmission adapter, engine mounts and hood arrangement in mind. A bare-engine measurement can understate the installed envelope.
Control hardware is part of the engine choice
Ford Performance lists control-pack options for its Gen 4X engine. A control pack is a logical starting point for wiring and engine management, but the cited information does not identify which pack suits every Bronco, transmission, throttle arrangement or accessory combination. Verify the exact engine generation and the pack’s compatibility before buying. Plan for the complete electrical system: engine harness, power distribution, grounds, fuel-pump control, throttle and pedal strategy, gauge integration, diagnostic access and a way to handle vehicle functions that the original engine never had.
When a Coyote makes sense
- You want modern naturally aspirated output and are prepared for electronic integration.
- The vehicle has enough vertical and lateral room, or you accept body, hood, crossmember or accessory changes.
- You are willing to engineer the transmission, transfer-case, driveshaft, cooling, fuel and exhaust systems as a package.
- You can document the engine generation, control pack and calibration requirements for your jurisdiction.
Ford Performance described a supercharged 5.0L Coyote package as projected to deliver more than 800 hp and 615 lb-ft in a January 30, 2025 article. Those are projections for a supercharged package, not the naturally aspirated Gen 4X or 2024 Mustang GT crate-engine ratings. They should not be used as a baseline for a stock Coyote swap.

302-based Windsor: the traditional baseline
Why builders still consider a 302
Ford Performance’s crate-engine catalog includes 302-based options. The family’s familiar pushrod layout, conventional distributor-era history and broad aftermarket knowledge can simplify mechanical planning compared with a modern dual-overhead-cam installation. That does not make every 302 crate engine interchangeable with every original Bronco component. The exact block, heads, timing cover, accessory drive, oil pan, flexplate or flywheel, intake, ignition and fuel system must be checked against the vehicle and transmission.
The Ford swap chart lists the 302 at 27.5 inches long and 20.75 inches high. Width is not stated in that chart entry. Its lower reference height can make hood and firewall planning easier than with the listed Coyote or 351W, but a complete engine with accessories and induction equipment is what must fit. Do not treat the chart as a clearance measurement for any Bronco model year.
What to verify before calling a 302 a replacement
- Identify the Bronco’s original engine family and model year.
- Confirm whether the selected crate engine uses the intended rear-main-seal, flywheel or flexplate and balancing arrangement.
- Match the timing cover, water pump rotation, accessory brackets and radiator hose locations to the planned cooling system.
- Check oil-pan shape and sump position against the front axle, steering and crossmember.
- Verify the intake and air-cleaner height under the actual hood.
- Determine whether the engine-management approach is carbureted, aftermarket electronic fuel injection or a factory-style control system, then design the fuel and wiring systems accordingly.
The 302 is often the most conservative choice for a classic-style build, but “conservative” means fewer integration surprises only when the specific crate configuration is matched deliberately to the Bronco. It is not evidence of a universal bolt-in solution.
351W: more Windsor capacity, different hardware
Why a 351W is not a tall 302
Ford’s engine-history material identifies several differences between the 351W and the 289/302 family. The 351W has a higher deck and requires a unique intake manifold. Ford also describes larger main journals and a different firing order from the 289/302 family, with noted exceptions for later 302 HO applications. Those distinctions affect rotating assemblies, bearings, intake selection, ignition sequencing and component interchange.
The swap chart lists the 351W at 27.5 inches long and 23.75 inches high, 3 inches taller than the charted 302. That extra height can affect hood clearance, distributor or coil placement, intake choice, air-cleaner clearance, firewall space and the angle of exhaust components. The chart does not establish width, front-sump or rear-sump clearance, or compatibility with any Bronco crossmember.
When the 351W is the better Windsor
A 351W can be appropriate when the project benefits from the Windsor family’s traditional layout but needs more displacement potential than a 302-based option. The decision should be based on the exact crate engine and the intended torque curve, not on displacement alone. Confirm the intake manifold, firing order, crank and flywheel or flexplate details, accessory drive, oil pan, headers and cooling capacity as one system.
Do not assume that a 302 intake, ignition part or rotating component transfers to a 351W because the engines look related. The higher deck and larger main journals are specifically documented differences. Later 302 HO firing-order exceptions are another reason to identify the exact engine rather than relying on family-level rules.

7.3L: a larger alternative with a narrow documented advantage
Ford lists a 7.3L crate engine as another possible Ford V8 route and states that it shares a bellhousing bolt pattern with 4.6, 5.4 and 5.0 Coyote engines. That fact may help frame transmission research, but it is not a swap recipe. A shared bolt pattern does not prove that a Bronco transmission, transfer case, crossmember, starter location, oil pan, driveshaft, cooling system or electronics will work.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The 7.3L should therefore remain a brief, build-specific option unless you have vehicle-specific documentation. Its physical size, accessory arrangement, engine controls and driveline loads need to be checked against the exact Bronco. Do not infer legality, bolt-in status or a complete parts list from the bellhousing statement alone.
Dimensions and packaging: how to measure before buying
Use Ford’s chart as a comparison aid, then create a measured envelope for the actual vehicle. Record the following with the body at its normal ride height and the front suspension at the intended travel range:
- Measure the bay. Capture firewall-to-radiator length, frame-rail width, steering and axle intrusion, hood height and the space above the transmission tunnel.
- Define the complete engine envelope. Include intake, throttle body, air filter, exhaust manifolds or headers, oil pan, front dress, alternator, power-steering or electric-steering hardware, starter and all sensors.
- Mark service clearances. Leave room to remove spark plugs, filters, belts, coils, valve covers and the transmission without dismantling the body.
- Check movement, not only static fit. Account for engine rock, suspension compression, steering articulation, drivetrain angles and body flex.
- Compare the planned engine mounts and oil pan. A block that fits between the rails can still fail at the mounts, sump, steering linkage or crossmember.
- Mock up the hood and exhaust. Use the actual hood, firewall insulation and steering shaft path before final welding.
Ford’s reference values are useful for ranking the options: the listed Coyote is 26 by 28 by 27 inches; the charted 302 is 27.5 inches long and 20.75 inches high; and the charted 351W is 27.5 inches long and 23.75 inches high. The missing or vehicle-dependent dimensions are precisely why a Bronco-specific measurement is required.
The systems that determine whether the swap works
Transmission and transfer case
Do not select an engine from bellhousing pattern alone. Confirm the transmission input, pilot arrangement, clutch or converter, starter position, mount location, tunnel space, transfer-case interface and driveshaft length. A Bronco’s four-wheel-drive system adds another set of alignment and strength questions. The cited Ford material does not provide a Bronco transmission or transfer-case compatibility matrix, so any claimed combination needs separate documentation for the exact vehicle.
Recommended Free Tools
Mounts, crossmember and oil pan
Engine mounts must place the crankshaft, transmission and transfer case at workable angles while clearing steering, front suspension and the hood. The oil pan and pickup must clear the axle and crossmember through suspension travel. A mount that physically holds the engine is not automatically a safe mount; check weld quality, load paths, vibration isolation and service access.
Cooling and exhaust
Modern output and tighter engine bays increase the importance of radiator capacity, fan clearance, hose routing and airflow management. Headers or manifolds must clear the frame, steering shaft, brake system, floor and starter. Build the exhaust around the selected engine and chassis rather than assuming an older Windsor pattern will fit a Coyote or 7.3L.

Fuel and electronics
The Coyote’s direct-and-port-injection architecture and control-pack requirements make fuel delivery and wiring central design tasks. A 302 or 351W can use a different control strategy, but the selected crate configuration still dictates sensors, ignition, throttle, fuel pressure and calibration. Plan the fuel tank, pump, filters, lines, relays, grounds and gauge integration before the engine is installed.
Brakes, cooling, chassis and driveline loads
More power changes the demands on the rest of the vehicle. Review braking capacity, steering, suspension, axle gearing, driveshafts, differentials, cooling and tire load before committing to a high-output engine. The available Ford sources do not provide a Bronco-specific safety upgrade list, so treat these as engineering checks rather than a prescribed parts catalog.

Build workflow: from Bronco identification to first start
- Document the vehicle. Write down model year, Bronco generation, wheelbase, original engine, transmission, transfer case, axle gearing, steering layout, fuel system and registration jurisdiction.
- Define use and power goals. Separate street driving, trail work, towing, racing and show use. The required torque curve, cooling margin, gearing and emissions obligations can differ substantially.
- Select the exact engine product. Record the Ford part number, generation, rated output, fuel requirement, accessory drive, oil-pan arrangement, control-pack requirement and included components.
- Build a measured mock-up. Confirm length, width, height, hood, firewall, steering, front axle, crossmember, radiator, exhaust and service clearances with the complete accessory set.
- Engineer the driveline. Verify bellhousing, pilot, clutch or converter, transmission mount, transfer-case connection, driveshafts, axle strength and operating angles.
- Design fuel, cooling and exhaust. Size the tank, pump, lines, radiator, fans, hoses, headers, catalytic equipment where required and mufflers for the chosen engine.
- Plan controls and instrumentation. Install the correct harness and control pack or other management system, then map power, grounds, relays, throttle, fuel-pump control, gauges and diagnostic access.
- Check compliance before fabrication. Confirm local inspection, emissions and registration rules for the Bronco’s model year and intended road use. Do not assume a crate engine is approved merely because it is sold by the manufacturer.
- Mock up, cycle and inspect. Move the steering and suspension through their ranges, check drivetrain angles, inspect heat paths and verify service access before final welding and paint.
- Commission methodically. Pressure-test fuel and cooling systems, verify oil pressure and sensor readings, check for exhaust and wiring heat damage, then perform a controlled road or off-road shakedown while monitoring temperatures and driveline behavior.
Costs: budget the conversion, not just the crate engine
The available specifications do not establish current prices, labor rates or a complete parts list, so a responsible comparison should not publish a single dollar figure for a Coyote, 302, 351W or 7.3L conversion. The engine price is only one line in the budget.
Build a written scope that includes the engine and freight; control pack and harness; mounts and crossmember work; oil pan and pickup; transmission or adapter parts; clutch or converter; transfer-case and driveshaft changes; fuel tank, pump and lines; radiator and fans; exhaust; battery and wiring; gauges; brakes and chassis work; calibration; fabrication; paint; fluids; and inspection or certification costs. Price the exact components for the identified Bronco and jurisdiction. A lower-cost long block can become the expensive choice if it requires extensive fabrication or a complete driveline replacement.
Legal and emissions limits
None of the cited Ford pages establishes that a listed crate engine is emissions-legal, approved or bolt-in for a particular Bronco. Requirements vary with model year, location, registration category and intended road use. Before buying, ask the relevant authority or a qualified inspection specialist what engine-year rules, catalytic-equipment requirements, evaporative controls, noise limits and documentation apply. Keep the engine identification, calibration information and component records needed for inspection.
Common mistakes and recovery strategies
Calling a Coyote a drop-in engine
Why it fails: The Coyote’s height, width, control hardware and accessory envelope are treated as if the bare block were the whole installation.

Using a 2024 Mustang GT rating for every Gen 4 Coyote
Why it fails: Ford lists 480 hp and 415 lb-ft for the separate 2024 Mustang GT Gen 4 product, while the Gen 4X crate listing is 460 hp and 420 lb-ft.
Recovery: Keep the exact product name and rating in the build file and design the calibration and supporting systems for that engine.
Assuming a 351W shares all 302 parts
Why it fails: The 351W has a higher deck, unique intake requirements, larger main journals and a different firing order, subject to the documented later-302-HO exception.
Recovery: Verify each component by the exact engine and firing-order specification rather than by family resemblance.
Treating a shared bellhousing pattern as proof of a complete 7.3L swap
Why it fails: Bolt-pattern information says nothing about transfer-case, mount, oil-pan, driveshaft, electronics or chassis compatibility.
Recovery: Obtain documentation for every interface on the specific Bronco and test the complete driveline geometry.
Budgeting only the engine
Why it fails: Wiring, fuel, cooling, exhaust, mounts, transmission work, driveshafts, brakes and inspection can dominate the project.
Recovery: Create a parts-and-labor scope before selecting the engine family, then add contingency for fabrication and rework.
Bottom line for each Bronco build
Choose the 302-based Windsor when a traditional pushrod layout and the charted lower height align with your Bronco and power goals. Choose the 351W when its additional height and distinct hardware are acceptable and you have a reason to use the larger Windsor route. Choose the Coyote when its modern 32-valve architecture and manufacturer-listed output justify the control-pack, packaging and driveline work. Keep the 7.3L as a specialized alternative until Bronco-specific documentation proves the complete installation.
The decisive next step is not ordering an engine. It is documenting the Bronco, selecting the exact engine product, measuring the complete package and verifying transmission, transfer-case, mounts, oil pan, cooling, exhaust, electronics and legal requirements as one conversion plan.
