Ford Battery Lawsuit Targets Certain Bronco Sport and Maverick Models

A proposed class action alleges battery failures in specified Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles. Here’s what the complaint, recall records and separate Ford suspension notice mean for owners.

A proposed class action against Ford Motor Company and Camel Group (USA) Battery, Inc. alleges that certain 2021–2024 Ford Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022–2023 Maverick trucks have defective Camel Group 12-volt batteries that can fail and cause sudden power loss or stalling. Those are claims in a complaint, not findings by a court. The battery lawsuit is also separate from Ford’s 2026 do-not-drive notice for a suspension issue affecting a limited group of vehicles.

What does the lawsuit allege?

In Ortega v. Ford Motor Company & Camel Group (USA) Battery, Inc., the plaintiff alleges that an internal weld and cast-on-strap (COS) in certain Camel Group 12-volt batteries can fail, potentially causing sudden power loss and stalling. The complaint also challenges Ford’s software-based recall remedy, arguing that software does not fix the alleged weakness inside the battery.

The proposed class described in the complaint covers purchasers of 2021–2024 Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022–2023 Maverick trucks equipped with a Camel Group 12-volt battery. The complaint invokes the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and Illinois consumer-fraud law, among other legal theories, and proposes a nationwide class. A proposed class is not a court-certified class, and the model-year description alone does not establish that a particular owner or vehicle qualifies.

A report and the complaint header list May 18, 2025, as the filing date and docket number 2:26-cv-11617. As of October 8, 2026, the available case information does not establish a later court order, class-certification decision, settlement, dismissal, or trial result. The allegations therefore should not be presented as proven or as a ruling against either defendant.

How is the lawsuit different from the battery recall?

The private lawsuit, the recall record, and the federal safety inquiry are related to concerns about 12-volt battery power loss, but they are different proceedings with different evidentiary status. The lawsuit advances a plaintiff’s claims; a recall is a manufacturer’s remedy for covered vehicles; and an investigation is a regulator’s review, not a court judgment.

Issue What the record says What it does not establish
Proposed lawsuit The complaint alleges a Camel Group battery internal-weld/COS defect in specified Bronco Sport and Maverick vehicles and challenges the adequacy of a software remedy. It does not establish that the defect has been proven, that a class has been certified, or that every vehicle in the model years is affected.
Battery-related recall NHTSA’s PE24002 investigation summary reports Ford submitted recall 24V-267 on April 12, 2024, for a population of 456,565 vehicles. The remedy used updated body-control and powertrain-control module calibrations intended to improve detection of low battery state and alert drivers. The recall figure is not an eligibility determination for an individual vehicle, and a software calibration is not a court finding about the battery allegations.
Federal inquiry In a May 7, 2025 letter, NHTSA described an open investigation into allegations of loss of motive power in certain 2021–2024 Bronco Sport and 2022–2023 Maverick vehicles related to 12-volt batteries, and requested additional and updated information from Ford. The letter is not itself a finding that the lawsuit’s allegations are true.

The PE24002 summary also says Ford adopted absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries as service components for the subject vehicles and as original equipment on some Bronco Sport production beginning in mid-March 2024. That summary is a compilation of investigation records; the information here does not establish battery fitment for every trim or model year. The lawsuit itself does not establish that owners should buy a replacement battery, and buying one should not be mistaken for a recall remedy.

What did Ford’s software-repair audit find?

Ford’s chronology supplement for recall 25S26 concerns an audit of software repairs performed under 24S24. In its April 9, 2025 submission to NHTSA, Ford said it first concluded that 96% of repairs had the correct software, then found an error in the audit data and revised the figure to 86.9%. Ford also said it was not aware of accidents or injuries related to the incomplete-remedy condition.

This audit issue is about whether the correct software was installed during repairs. It is distinct from the lawsuit’s allegation that a battery has an underlying hardware weakness. The revised percentage is Ford’s conclusion in its submission, not an independent finding by NHTSA.

What is the separate 2026 do-not-drive notice?

Ford issued a 2026 notice concerning a potential suspension assembly issue in approximately 4,653 certain 2021–2026 Bronco Sport and 2021–2026 Maverick vehicles in the United States and Federal Territories. Ford told affected owners to stop driving immediately and said it would arrange complimentary towing and inspection, with repair as needed. This suspension matter is separate from the battery lawsuit and its recall context; model year alone is not enough to determine whether a vehicle is covered.

How should Bronco Sport and Maverick owners check their vehicles?

  1. Check the VIN. Use NHTSA’s or Ford’s recall lookup to check open recalls and remedy status for the specific vehicle. NHTSA says recalls do not expire and reviews complaints alongside other information when assessing whether a possible defect trend warrants investigation.
  2. Follow any do-not-drive instruction that applies. If Ford’s suspension notice covers the vehicle, stop driving and contact a dealership about the complimentary tow and inspection.
  3. Use the official battery-recall guidance. For a covered battery recall, follow the notice and dealer instructions. Do not treat the lawsuit as a recommendation to purchase a battery or as proof that an owner-paid replacement will resolve the issue.
  4. Keep the issues separate. Confirm whether a notice concerns the battery or the suspension, and whether the remedy is still needed or has already been completed. A complaint, an open investigation, a recall record, and a court finding are not interchangeable.

NHTSA says there is “no set number” of complaints required before it reviews a potential safety-defect trend; the agency considers each complaint with other data. A complaint or investigation by itself does not determine whether a particular VIN is subject to a recall, so use the VIN result and the applicable official notice for that decision.
