Ford’s next-generation F-150 Lightning will use a gasoline-powered generator to extend its range, but Ford says electric motors will still propel the truck. The company announced the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) on December 15, 2025, estimating more than 700 miles of range. That is a company estimate, not a finalized EPA rating or an independently verified test result.
What Ford announced for the next F-150 Lightning
Ford says the next-generation F-150 Lightning will pair electric-motor propulsion with a high-power generator that supplies electricity to extend the truck’s range. The company says the EREV is intended to support long-distance travel and towing without stopping to charge, and that it will offer exportable electricity, as the current Lightning does. These are Ford’s announced aims; the company has not yet published a complete set of engineering specifications or independent test results. Ford said production of the current all-electric F-150 Lightning would end in 2025. It plans to assemble the EREV successor at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. Is the next Lightning a hybrid?
Ford’s description is more specific than simply calling it a gas-electric hybrid: the truck is an EREV, and Ford says it is propelled 100% by electric motors. The gasoline-powered generator is intended to make electricity and extend range; Ford has not described it as mechanically driving the wheels. That distinction matters because a generator-backed electric truck and a conventional hybrid do not necessarily deliver power to the wheels in the same way.

Ford says the design aims to preserve electric driving and quick acceleration while making longer trips and towing less dependent on finding charging stops. Those are manufacturer claims, not results from a published independent test. The announcement does not provide finalized battery or generator specifications, fuel economy, charging performance, payload, or towing capacity.
Why Ford is changing the Lightning’s powertrain
The EREV announcement is part of a broader shift in Ford’s powertrain strategy. In December 2025, the company said it would offer a mix of gasoline, hybrid, EREV, and fully electric vehicles, while focusing pure-electric development on a flexible platform for smaller, more affordable vehicles. Ford described this as a customer-driven business decision and said it was redeploying capital toward trucks, vans, hybrids, and battery energy storage. That is Ford’s stated rationale, not independent evidence of why customers would choose this specific EREV.

How the plan changed from Ford’s earlier electric-truck roadmap
In August 2024, Ford described a next-generation electric truck, code-named Project T3, with its launch retimed to the second half of 2027. That earlier roadmap is useful context, but Ford’s December 2025 announcement subsequently specified an EREV architecture for the next-generation F-150 Lightning. The Associated Press characterized the move as a shift away from the fully electric Lightning toward an extended-range version, in the context of Ford’s financial losses and demand considerations. That is outside reporting about the business shift; Ford’s technical description remains that the successor is propelled by electric motors. Associated Press coverage

The announced range does not establish how far the truck will travel on battery power alone, how much fuel the generator will use, or how range will change when towing. Ford has not published enough specifications to compare the EREV’s efficiency, emissions, payload, towing capacity, charging needs, purchase price, or operating cost with the current battery-electric Lightning. Those details—and a finalized EPA range rating—will be needed to judge how the new configuration performs in real use.
