Ford has ended production of the current-generation, all-electric F-150 Lightning and is changing what the Lightning name means. The company is not abandoning the nameplate: its planned successor will be an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that uses electric motors for propulsion and a gasoline engine as a generator.
Ford made the decision on December 11, 2025, disclosed it publicly on December 15, and has not announced the exact date when current-generation assembly ended. As of August 9, 2026, Ford’s own product page says the battery-electric Lightning is no longer available to order in its existing form.
What happened to the F-150 Lightning?
Ford has ended the current generation of the F-150 Lightning, the full-size pickup launched as a battery-electric alternative to the gas-powered F-150. This is a production and product-strategy change, not a complete retirement of the Lightning name.
Ford’s SEC filing says the decision to end current-generation Lightning production was made on December 11, 2025. The company announced the broader restructuring four days later. Ford has not published a precise final production date, and remaining trucks could still appear in dealer inventory after factory production stopped.

Ford’s current F-150 Lightning product page now says the truck is “no longer available in its current form” and “will no longer be available to order in its current form.” That wording matters: it describes the end of the existing battery-electric version, not the end of the Lightning badge.
The replacement will be an EREV, not a conventional hybrid
Ford plans to reuse the Lightning name for a next-generation extended-range electric vehicle. The truck will be propelled by electric motors, while a gasoline engine will generate electricity to replenish the battery when needed.
That makes the planned truck different from a traditional hybrid, where an engine and electric motor can both drive the wheels. Ford says the EREV will retain the characteristics buyers expect from an EV, including electric acceleration, quiet operation and exportable power, while reducing charging stops on long trips.
The arrangement is particularly relevant to towing. A trailer can substantially increase energy consumption and make charging stops more frequent. A gasoline generator could provide additional energy during a long tow, although Ford has not yet published the successor’s battery size, towing rating, fuel economy, charging specifications or detailed drivetrain layout.
Ford claims more than 700 miles of range
Ford has estimated that the next-generation Lightning will offer more than 700 miles of range. That is a company target, not an EPA-certified figure. It also remains unclear how Ford will define that number—whether it refers to combined operation with a full battery and fuel supply, or another test condition.

There is no confirmed retail launch date. Ford’s current FAQ says it is “not yet prepared to announce specific availability dates.” The 2027 date sometimes associated with Ford’s electric-truck plans applies to a separate midsize pickup, not the next-generation F-150 Lightning EREV.

Why Ford is changing its electric-truck strategy
Ford’s broader plan is moving away from an all-electric approach for every vehicle segment. The company now expects its 2030 global volume to be approximately 50% hybrids, EREVs and EVs, compared with 17% in 2025.
For large trucks and SUVs, Ford is emphasizing powertrains that can address range, towing and refueling concerns. The company’s October 2025 production announcement said F-150 Lightning assembly at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center would remain paused while Ford prioritized more profitable gas and hybrid F-Series models.
Ford cited several reasons for restructuring its EV business:
- Lower-than-expected EV adoption
- High production costs and pricing pressure
- Changes in regulations and government policy
- The termination of U.S. EV tax credits
- The lack of a clear path to long-term EV profitability under the previous plan
Ford estimates approximately $19.5 billion in special items related to the EV restructuring. About $8.5 billion of that total is tied to Model e asset impairments and program write-downs. The company expects approximately $5.5 billion in cash effects, primarily in 2026 and the remainder in 2027.

Ford is narrowing—not abandoning—its EV lineup
The change to the Lightning does not mean Ford has walked away from electric vehicles. Ford says it will continue offering the Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit while concentrating future pure-EV development on a lower-cost Universal Electric Vehicle platform.
The first announced UEV model is a midsize electric pickup scheduled for assembly at Louisville Assembly Plant beginning in 2027. That truck is separate from the full-size F-150 Lightning EREV.

Ford has also canceled or replaced several previously planned EV programs. A planned full-size electric truck is being replaced with more affordable gas-powered trucks at Tennessee Truck Plant. A planned U.S. commercial electric van is being replaced by a new gas-and-hybrid commercial van, and a European commercial electric van program has also been canceled or replaced.
The company is additionally planning a battery-energy-storage business based on repurposed EV-battery capacity. Ford says it intends to invest roughly $2 billion over two years and deploy at least 20 GWh annually by late 2027 for data centers, utilities and industrial customers.
What current F-150 Lightning owners need to know
Existing owners are not losing Ford support because production has ended. Ford says software updates, replacement parts and EV service will continue. The high-voltage battery warranty remains eight years or 100,000 miles, with coverage that retains at least 70% of the battery’s original capacity during that period.

Parts availability and long-term service costs are still reasonable concerns for anyone shopping used, but the production decision does not cancel the vehicle’s warranty or service obligations. Buyers should verify warranty transfer terms, recall completion, battery condition and the availability of a qualified EV service department before purchasing a used Lightning.
Why 2026 Lightning sales figures can be confusing
Ford’s first-quarter 2026 U.S. sales report listed 2,060 F-150 Lightning sales, a 71.3% decline from 7,187 in the first quarter of 2025. Those sales represent deliveries from available inventory. They do not show that Ford resumed production of the current-generation truck.
That distinction is important whenever monthly or quarterly sales data is used to describe the Lightning’s status. A vehicle can continue reaching customers after factory production has stopped, especially when dealers still have unsold inventory.
What this means for truck buyers
Buyers who want a pure battery-electric full-size Ford pickup have a narrower path: they must locate existing Lightning inventory or shop the used market. Ford is no longer treating the current truck as an ongoing orderable model.
Buyers willing to wait for the next Lightning will have to accept substantial uncertainty. Ford has provided the EREV concept and a range estimate, but not pricing, final specifications, fuel-economy ratings, towing numbers or a firm availability date. The eventual truck could solve some of the practical limitations that affected electric towing, but those claims cannot be evaluated until Ford publishes production specifications and independent testing is available.

FAQ
Did Ford kill the F-150 Lightning?
Ford ended production of the current-generation, all-electric F-150 Lightning. It did not retire the Lightning name; Ford plans to use the name for a future extended-range electric truck.
What is the next F-150 Lightning powertrain?
Ford describes it as an EREV. Electric motors will drive the truck, while a gasoline engine will generate electricity to extend driving range. It should not be described as a conventional hybrid.
When will the next F-150 Lightning go on sale?
Ford has not announced a firm retail availability date. Its current FAQ says the company is not yet prepared to announce specific availability dates.

Will Ford still support existing F-150 Lightning trucks?
Yes. Ford says software updates, replacement parts, EV service and the eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty remain in place.
The Bottom Line
Ford has ended the current battery-electric F-150 Lightning, but the nameplate is being repositioned rather than discarded. Its planned successor will use electric motors and a gasoline range-extending generator, with Ford estimating more than 700 miles of range. There is no confirmed launch date yet. The move reflects Ford’s larger shift toward offering different powertrains for different vehicle sizes and uses, especially hybrids and EREVs for full-size trucks.
