Ford lists the two Power Stroke ratings in its 2026 Super Duty specifications. Chevrolet lists the Duramax rating and Allison transmission on its 2026 Silverado HD specifications page. On the published numbers alone, the standard-output Ford is slightly ahead of the Duramax, and the high-output Ford widens the gap. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a shared dynamometer, road test or fuel-economy test, so they should not be treated as a controlled performance comparison.
What the power difference means in real work
Horsepower and torque answer different questions
Torque is the twisting force that helps a heavy truck start a load, climb a grade and hold speed without repeatedly downshifting. Horsepower describes the rate at which the engine can perform work, which becomes more noticeable when a truck is accelerating at speed or maintaining momentum on a long hill. The figures are useful for understanding the engines’ stated capacity, but they do not tell you how much weight a particular truck can legally or safely carry.

Why the high-output Ford is not automatically the best buy
The 500-hp/1,200-lb-ft Power Stroke gives Ford the largest published engine figures in this comparison. That extra output may be valuable to someone who frequently pulls a very heavy fifth-wheel or gooseneck, drives in mountainous terrain, or wants more reserve while merging with a loaded trailer. It is unnecessary justification, however, to buy the high-output engine if your trailer, payload and axle ratings are already comfortably met by the standard-output truck. The higher-output option cannot raise a tire, axle, hitch or chassis rating beyond the limits assigned to the specific configuration.
Why a 470-hp Duramax can still be the right engine
The Duramax’s published output is close to Ford’s standard diesel. If a Silverado HD in the cab, bed, axle and hitch configuration you need has enough payload and trailer rating for your equipment, the numerical difference may have little practical effect. Visibility, turning space, bed length, trailer-brake setup, dealer support in your area and the way the truck fits your daily use can matter more than a 5-hp or 75-lb-ft gap.
Towing ratings: compare the configuration, not the headline
Advertised maximums come from different model years and different equipment assumptions. Ford’s 2025 Super Duty Pickup Towing Guide lists up to 38,600 pounds for a standard-output diesel and up to 40,000 pounds for a high-output diesel. Chevrolet’s 2026 Silverado HD page states up to 36,000 pounds of maximum diesel trailering. Those figures are not equivalent test results: they describe the highest advertised capability under each manufacturer’s specified conditions.

The Chevrolet maximum is especially easy to misread. It is not a blanket rating for every Silverado HD. The listed 36,000-pound figure requires a very specific 3500 HD dual-rear-wheel work-truck configuration and a gooseneck hitch. A crew-cab four-wheel-drive truck with a shorter bed, different axle or additional options can have a lower rating.
Ford’s numbers likewise come from a towing guide, not a universal promise for every Super Duty. Changing from a regular cab to a crew cab, from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive, from a single-rear-wheel to a dual-rear-wheel axle, or adding equipment changes curb weight and the available rating. Ford also notes that its horsepower, torque, payload, towing and EPA-estimated fuel-economy ratings are independent attributes and may not be achieved simultaneously. That warning appears in the 2026 Super Duty technical specifications.
How to match a truck to your trailer
1. Start with the trailer’s real loaded weight
Use the trailer manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), then estimate the actual cargo, water, tools and personal items you will carry. A trailer that weighs 12,000 pounds empty can be far heavier on the road. If you already own it, take the loaded combination to a certified public scale instead of relying on an internet estimate.

2. Calculate tongue or pin weight
Conventional trailers transfer tongue weight to the truck’s receiver and rear axle. Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers transfer pin weight into the bed. That vertical load counts against the truck’s payload along with passengers, fuel, tools, a hitch and accessories. A truck can be below its maximum trailer rating and still exceed its payload or rear-axle rating.

Before signing a purchase order, read the truck’s certification label and payload statement. Confirm the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), front and rear gross axle weight ratings (GAWR), tire ratings and maximum payload. Do not substitute a brochure’s best-case number for the label on the actual vehicle.
4. Match the hitch and trailer connection
Verify whether your trailer needs a weight-distributing receiver, fifth-wheel rails or a gooseneck ball. The hitch itself has a rated trailer weight and vertical-load limit. A factory tow package, brake controller, cooling equipment and wiring can be required for the rating you intend to use. Chevrolet’s published 36,000-pound example specifically depends on a gooseneck hitch; that condition is not optional for that advertised maximum.

5. Leave operating margin
Do not plan to tow at the absolute maximum every day. Cargo changes, wind, grades, heat and passengers add uncertainty. A truck with meaningful capacity remaining is easier to control and gives you flexibility when the trailer is loaded differently than expected.
Choosing between Ford’s standard and high-output Power Stroke
Standard-output 6.7L Power Stroke
- Published output: 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft.
- Best fit for buyers whose verified trailer and payload figures are well within the standard diesel’s configuration-specific ratings.
- Can avoid paying for capability you will never use, although the cited material does not establish a price difference.
- Still requires a configuration check; the engine rating alone does not identify the truck’s payload or maximum trailer rating.
High-output 6.7L Power Stroke
- Published output: 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft.
- Logical for frequent heavy fifth-wheel or gooseneck work when the selected axle, hitch and chassis are also rated for that job.
- Ford’s 2025 guide lists the higher advertised towing maximum for qualifying high-output configurations, but that figure cannot be transferred to a differently equipped truck.
- Do not select it solely to compensate for an overloaded trailer; legal payload and axle limits still apply.
Choosing the 6.6L Duramax Silverado HD
When the Duramax is enough
A Silverado HD with the Duramax makes sense when its exact configuration meets your trailer’s loaded weight, pin or tongue weight and hitch requirements. Its 470-hp/975-lb-ft rating is close to Ford’s standard diesel, so a buyer who does not need the highest available Ford output should focus on the complete truck rather than assuming the engine number decides the result.
Pay attention to 2500 HD versus 3500 HD
“Silverado HD” covers more than one chassis and axle configuration. The 3500 HD, especially in dual-rear-wheel form, is the version associated with Chevrolet’s cited 36,000-pound maximum. A 2500 HD or a lighter 3500 HD configuration may have substantially different payload and trailering limits. Confirm the rating for the exact cab, bed, axle, drivetrain and package shown on the vehicle’s label and order sheet.

Allison 10-speed specification
Chevrolet pairs the 2026 Duramax with a 10-speed Allison automatic. Ford’s towing guide lists a standard TorqShift 10-speed automatic for the Super Duty diesel. These names identify the transmissions supplied with the trucks; the cited sources do not establish that one is more reliable, durable or better shifting than the other.

- Write down the trailer’s numbers. Record GVWR, expected loaded weight, tongue or pin-weight percentage, coupler type and brake requirements.
- Decide how the truck will be used when not towing. A dual-rear-wheel truck offers heavy-load stability but is wider and less convenient for parking; a shorter bed can improve maneuverability but may constrain a fifth-wheel setup.
- Build a configuration shortlist. For each Ford or Chevrolet candidate, specify cab, bed, 2WD or 4WD, rear-axle type, engine output, axle ratio if listed, tow package and hitch.
- Read the manufacturer’s exact rating table. Use Ford’s towing guide or Chevrolet’s model-page conditions to locate the row matching your configuration. Treat a maximum as conditional, not transferable.
- Verify the vehicle label. Compare the truck’s GVWR, GAWR, tire ratings and stated payload with your loaded passengers, cargo, hitch and trailer pin or tongue weight.
- Check the combination at a scale. After loading the trailer as you will travel, weigh the front axle, rear axle and combined vehicle. Correct any overload before a long trip.
- Choose reserve capacity over a paper tie. If two trucks meet the numbers, select the one that leaves more practical margin for cargo and route conditions, then consider visibility, maneuverability and service access.
Questions the published specifications cannot answer
The cited manufacturer material establishes output, transmission names and selected towing maxima. It does not provide a controlled comparison of purchase prices, transaction discounts, fuel consumption, maintenance costs, insurance premiums, resale values or long-term failure rates. Those ownership factors can change by region, trim, incentives, driving pattern and service history, so neither diesel can responsibly be called the cheaper, more economical or more reliable choice from these figures alone.
Likewise, the numbers do not prove acceleration, braking feel, ride quality, noise, transmission durability or real-world fuel economy. A buyer who needs those answers should obtain comparable independent tests and quotes for the exact trims under consideration rather than infer them from horsepower and torque.

Choose the Ford standard-output Power Stroke when…
- Your matched configuration has ample payload and trailer capacity without the high-output engine.
- You want Ford’s slightly higher published output than the Duramax but do not need the highest advertised towing configuration.
- Your preferred cab, bed, axle, hitch and local service availability fit the job better than the alternatives.
Choose the Ford high-output Power Stroke when…
- You regularly operate near the upper end of a properly matched fifth-wheel or gooseneck combination.
- The exact truck includes the axle, hitch and packages required for its rating, with payload remaining for people and cargo.
- You value additional published torque and horsepower as operating reserve, not as permission to exceed a rating.
Choose the Chevrolet 6.6L Duramax when…
- The Silverado HD configuration you can buy meets your measured trailer and payload needs.
- You prefer its available cab, bed, drivetrain, hitch arrangement or local support.
- You do not need the special 3500 HD dual-rear-wheel configuration associated with Chevrolet’s maximum trailering claim, or you have verified the lower rating of your chosen truck.
