Why the filter matters
An oil change normally removes and replaces the filter at the same service. Because Ford’s capacity includes that filter, adding 15 quarts after leaving the old filter installed would not follow the stated service condition. Plan the service around an oil-and-filter replacement, not an oil-only drain.
Do not fill by the number alone
Capacity is a starting reference, not permission to pour in a fixed amount without checking the engine. Add oil in stages, allow it to settle according to the owner’s procedure, and read the dipstick on level ground. Ford warns against adding oil above the maximum mark. If the level is over the mark, obtain service guidance rather than continuing to operate with an overfilled crankcase.
What oil does the 6.7 Power Stroke use?
Normal operating conditions: 10W-30
For normal use, the 2026 manual recommends Motorcraft SAE 10W-30 Super Duty Diesel Motor Oil meeting WSS-M2C171-F1. In the United States, the manual names Motorcraft product XO-10W30-QSDF. If that product is unavailable, an equivalent oil is acceptable only when it has the recommended SAE viscosity and explicitly meets Ford’s WSS-M2C171-F1 specification.

Extremely cold temperatures: 0W-40
Ford lists SAE 0W-40 when ambient temperature reaches -22°F (-30°C) or below. This is a cold-climate alternative tied to the temperature threshold in the manual. It does not mean 0W-40 is the preferred grade for ordinary temperatures or for every truck.
B20 fuel blends: 5W-40 or 15W-40
For operation with B20 fuel blends, Ford lists SAE 5W-40 and SAE 15W-40 oils that meet WSS-M2C171-F1. Select from those grades only when the fuel and operating condition match the manual’s guidance. Do not treat the B20 recommendation as a reason to substitute a heavier oil in a truck using ordinary fuel.
Severe-duty service: 5W-40
The manual also lists SAE 5W-40 for severe-duty service. “Severe duty” should be interpreted through Ford’s maintenance guidance and the way the truck is used; it is not a blanket instruction for every 6.7L Power Stroke. If your use combines heavy work, unusual temperatures, or a specified fuel blend, confirm the applicable section of your owner’s manual before changing viscosity.

Ford cautions against supplemental engine-oil additives. The safest way to meet the engine’s requirements is to use a complete oil meeting the stated viscosity and WSS-M2C171-F1 specification rather than trying to modify the lubricant with an aftermarket additive.

How the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor sets the interval
There is no single universal mileage number
For the 2026 truck, Ford does not present one fixed mileage interval that applies to every owner. The Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor evaluates how the vehicle is used and displays when the engine oil and filter should be changed. Short trips, heavy work, towing, idling, temperature extremes, and other operating patterns can produce a different interval from a lightly used highway truck.

When the monitor shows the service interval
Change the engine oil and filter at the interval shown in the instrument cluster. The displayed message is the truck-specific timing instruction; replacing oil merely because another truck uses a particular mileage schedule can result in servicing too early or too late for your use.

If an alert appears earlier than expected
Ford says that when the monitor signals a need before general service, the oil and filter should be replaced within two weeks or 500 miles (800 kilometers), whichever comes first. That is a response window, not a new recurring interval. After service, follow the truck’s prescribed monitor-reset procedure and verify that the system recognizes the completed maintenance.

A practical 6.7L oil-change workflow
The exact drain-plug, filter, and refill procedure varies by truck configuration and should be performed according to the owner’s manual or a qualified service provider. These planning steps keep the specification and level checks aligned with Ford’s requirements.
- Identify the truck precisely. Confirm the model year, market, Super Duty configuration, and 6.7L engine. Do not assume that a 2026 capacity applies to an earlier Power Stroke.
- Check the operating condition. Determine whether the truck is in normal service, an extremely cold climate at or below -22°F (-30°C), B20 fuel-blend operation, or severe-duty use. That decision controls whether 10W-30, 0W-40, 5W-40, or 15W-40 is appropriate.
- Buy compliant oil and a compatible filter. For normal use, select SAE 10W-30 that clearly states WSS-M2C171-F1 compliance. Choose a model-year-compatible 6.7L Power Stroke filter and plan for the filter to be replaced at the same service.
- Drain the used oil and replace the filter. Follow the manual’s safety and access instructions. Collect the full drain volume in a suitable container and dispose of used oil and the old filter through an approved recycling or collection point.
- Refill gradually. Use the 15.0-quart figure as the 2026 service reference, remembering that it includes the new filter. Do not dump in more oil simply to match the number if the dipstick reaches the maximum mark first.
- Verify the level. Park on a level surface and use the dipstick according to the manual’s checking procedure. The final level must remain within the marked range and must not exceed maximum.
- Confirm the maintenance monitor. Apply the owner’s specified reset process and check the instrument cluster for confirmation. A reset does not correct an incorrect oil grade or an overfilled engine, so verify the physical level separately.
- Record the service. Note the date, mileage, oil grade, Ford specification, and filter part information. Continue to use the next Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor message as the timing reference.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using 15 quarts as a universal 6.7L figure
The 15.0-quart value is specifically documented for the 2026 Super Duty 6.7L diesel. Presenting it as the capacity for every model year can create an overfill or underfill. Check the manual for the truck’s actual year and market.
Choosing oil by viscosity alone
SAE 10W-30, 5W-40, 15W-40, and 0W-40 describe viscosity grades, not complete approval for this engine. The normal-use oil must meet WSS-M2C171-F1, and the listed alternatives remain tied to their stated conditions.

Ignoring the filter in the service volume
Because Ford’s 15.0-quart capacity includes the filter, an oil-only drain and a filter-equipped service are not equivalent. Replace the filter when changing the oil unless a qualified technician gives a model-specific reason not to.

Following a calendar or mileage rule instead of the monitor
The 2026 system is designed to account for use. A generic “every X miles” rule can conflict with the interval displayed by your truck. When the monitor calls for service, follow its timing and Ford’s two-week-or-500-mile response window for an early alert.
Overfilling after a low dipstick reading
Add oil in measured increments and recheck the dipstick rather than assuming the entire 15-quart reference is still required. If the reading rises above maximum, stop adding oil and arrange correction; Ford specifically warns against an above-maximum level.
Resetting the monitor without changing the oil
A monitor reset only changes the maintenance reminder. It does not replace contaminated oil, restore additive performance, or correct the wrong viscosity. Reset the system only after the oil and filter service has actually been completed.
Model-year and market cautions
The 6.7L Power Stroke name covers multiple generations of Ford Super Duty trucks. Oil-pan design, filter arrangement, calibration, and maintenance instructions can change between years. Even when two trucks share the 6.7L displacement, their capacities and recommended intervals are not automatically identical.
Before ordering oil, read the oil-capacity and engine-oil sections for your vehicle’s model year and market. The 2026 figure of 15.0 quarts (14.2 liters) is authoritative for the variants listed in that manual, but it should not be transferred to an earlier truck without confirmation. - Oil with the required SAE grade and WSS-M2C171-F1 specification.
- A model-year-compatible 6.7L Power Stroke oil filter.
- A container large enough for the complete drained volume.

- Access to approved used-oil and filter recycling.
