Shelby American Collection’s account describes a production sequence in which an initial group of roughly 100 Cobras used Ford’s 427, a second group of roughly 100 received production-based 428 Police Interceptor engines, and the 427 returned for approximately the final four dozen cars. The cars kept the “427 Cobra” model name throughout that middle batch. Those figures are approximate historical counts, not a complete factory ledger, and they do not mean every 427-badged Cobra had a 428.
The badge and the engine were two different facts
The confusion starts with the way the Cobra was named. “427 Cobra” was the model designation, while 427 or 428 described the displacement and specification of the engine installed in a particular car. A badge, sales description or registration entry can therefore say 427 Cobra even when the documented engine is a 428.

That distinction matters because enthusiasts often treat the badge as a mechanical specification. In this case, the name stayed put while the engine supply changed. The most accurate correction to the popular story is not that “428s were actually 427s.” It is that some cars sold as 427 Cobras actually carried 428 engines.
Shelby American Collection identifies 1967 Cobra CSX3269 as one of the later cars that originally had a 428 and was nevertheless sold as a 427 Cobra. One car cannot establish the specification of every Cobra, but it demonstrates how the naming and hardware could diverge.

How the 427-to-428-to-427 sequence unfolded
First batch: approximately 100 cars with the FE 427
According to Shelby American Collection, the first batch of roughly 100 cars used Ford’s FE 427 with solid lifters. This was the high-performance, race-oriented version associated with the Cobra’s 427 identity. The count is presented as “about 100,” so it should be read as an approximate group size rather than a verified chassis-by-chassis total.
Second batch: approximately 100 cars with the 428
In early 1966, Ford specified a production-based 428 for the next group of approximately 100 cars. The collection’s explanation is practical: the race-based 427 was difficult to produce in small quantities and cost about twice as much. Using the more readily available 428 helped keep production moving, but the model name remained 427 Cobra.
These were not necessarily identical engines with different casting numbers. A 428 Police Interceptor was a different production configuration from the solid-lifter 427. The historical point is that a 428 could be installed in a car whose official model designation still said 427.
Final batch: the 427 returns
The same account says the 427 returned for about the last four dozen cars in early 1967. That gives the commonly repeated sequence: an initial 427 group, a middle 428 group, then a short final run with 427 engines. Because the figures are approximate and no complete public VIN-by-VIN registry is supplied here, the sequence is best used as historical context, not as a substitute for inspecting an individual car.

The table reflects the collection page’s approximate wording. It should not be interpreted as a complete production total or proof that every car in a phase received an untouched original engine.
What the 427 and 428 shared—and what they did not
Both engines belong to Ford’s FE family. Ford Racing’s May 2025 “FE Race Reunion” overview places FE production from 1958 through 1976 and lists both the 427 and 428 as 7.0 L when displacement is rounded to metric liters. Rounding both to 7.0 L is useful for broad classification, but it does not make the engines interchangeable or identical.
Displacement is determined by bore and stroke, while the engine’s character also depends on block architecture, crankshaft, cylinder heads, valvetrain, compression, induction and intended duty. A model badge cannot tell you which of those parts are present today, and a replacement engine can further separate a car’s current hardware from its factory configuration.

A 1968 Ford High Performance Parts Catalog, reproduced by the Auto History Preservation Society, places the 428 Cobra Jet in a described 5,000–6,000 rpm operating range and contrasts it with the 427’s 7,000-plus range. The catalog calls the 428 Cobra Jet basically a street engine and discusses modifications for stock and Super Stock competition. That is period guidance for the variants discussed in that catalog, not a modern dynamometer test and not a blanket description of every 428 or every 427.

The Cobra cars in the Shelby account are described as receiving 428 Police Interceptor engines, so do not automatically relabel every Cobra 428 as a Cobra Jet. “428” is a displacement family with multiple variants, and Police Interceptor, Cobra Jet and other specifications should be identified separately when the evidence permits.
Why a casting mark cannot settle the question
FE blocks can look nearly identical from outside an assembled engine. DIY Ford’s identification guide warns that common casting marks are clues, not proof of displacement or originality.
- A “352” mark appears on many FE blocks, including 390, 428 and 427 applications.
- A block marked “66-427” can appear on an otherwise ordinary 390, so the number alone does not authenticate a 427.
- A “428” cast into the water-jacket core is a strong clue that the casting core was intended for a 428.
- Cross-bolted main caps suggest a 427-style block, but cross-bolts can be added later and therefore do not prove factory assembly.
These warnings are especially important on valuable Cobras, where engines may have been rebuilt, replaced, restamped or modified over decades. A casting number can help establish what a part may be; it cannot, by itself, prove that the engine is original to the chassis or that every internal component matches the advertised specification.

For a serious identification, combine several independent observations and document the engine’s condition before drawing a conclusion. The following approach follows the practical guidance described by DIY Ford and its measurement reference.

- Record the car’s identity separately. Photograph the chassis number, title description, engine number and any restoration records. Treat “427 Cobra” on paperwork as the model name, not proof of the installed displacement.
- Photograph every visible casting and stamping mark. Clean only enough dirt and paint to read the markings without grinding or altering them. Record their exact location, not just the characters.
- Check for a 428 indication in the water-jacket core. A “428” cast into the core is meaningful evidence of a 428-type casting, although it still does not prove that the complete engine is original or internally unmodified.
- Inspect the main-cap arrangement. Cross-bolts are suggestive of a 427-style block, but inspect for signs of later machining or conversion before treating them as factory evidence.
- Measure through the center freeze-plug opening when necessary. The technical method described by DIY Ford uses drill-bit shanks to measure the gap between cylinder cores through the opening. Core spacing can help distinguish water-jacket designs that look alike externally. Use the measurement as technical evidence, not as a guarantee of the engine’s complete assembly.
- Verify the rotating assembly and valvetrain. If the engine is already apart, measure bore and stroke and identify the crank, rods, pistons, heads and camshaft. If it is assembled, a specialist may need to use non-destructive inspection or partial disassembly.
- Compare the mechanical evidence with the historical record. A car from the approximate middle production group may be consistent with a 428 installation, but production sequence alone cannot prove the engine currently in that car is the one it left Shelby with.
When the value or authenticity of a car depends on the answer, use a Ford FE specialist or qualified machine shop. Ask for a written report that distinguishes casting identity, current internal parts and documented vehicle provenance rather than collapsing all three into a single “427” or “428” label.

Separate three claims that sellers often combine
- Model claim: Is the chassis documented as a 427 Cobra?
- Engine claim: Is the installed engine a 427, a 428 variant or another FE combination?
- Originality claim: Is that engine documented as the one installed when the car was built?
A car can satisfy the first claim while failing the second, as the 428-powered cars in the Shelby account show. It can satisfy the first two while lacking proof of the third if the engine was replaced or rebuilt. Request evidence for each claim independently.
Questions to ask for documentation
- Which source identifies the chassis and its production phase?
- Are the engine casting marks photographed in place and legible?
- Does the inspection identify a 428 Police Interceptor, another 428 variant or a 427, rather than only repeating the badge?
- Are there invoices, restoration photographs or expert reports connecting the engine to the chassis?
- Which parts are original, and which were replaced during restoration?
If an answer relies on one “427” or “428” mark, treat it as incomplete. FE identification is a process of corroboration, not a one-number lookup.

The provocative phrase captures a real mismatch between the name on the car and the engine supplied during part of production. It is wrong, however, if it implies that the cars were secretly 427s when they were actually 428s, or that every 427 Cobra had the same engine. The evidence supports a narrower statement: the 427 Cobra name covered cars built with more than one FE engine specification, including a documented middle run with 428 Police Interceptor engines.

Nor does the shared FE family erase the engineering differences. Ford’s rounded 7.0 L listings describe family-level displacement, while the period catalog’s rpm discussion illustrates different intended operating characteristics. A 428 installation was not merely a 427 with a different badge, and a 427 casting mark is not automatically proof of a complete 427 engine.

The accurate takeaway
Some cars sold as 427 Cobras were fitted with 428 engines, especially in the approximate second batch described for early 1966. The 427 name remained because it identified the Cobra model, not a guaranteed engine displacement. The 427 returned for roughly the final four dozen cars in early 1967, according to Shelby American Collection’s account. To identify a particular car, go beyond its badge: document the chassis, inspect multiple casting features, use core-spacing measurement when needed, and separate engine identity from originality and provenance.
