Its team said it had been told the pass was the second-quickest motorcycle quarter-mile run at the time, behind Eric Teboul’s 4.9766-second pass. That ranking is specifically about elapsed time over a standing quarter-mile—not a general top-speed record. The team later reported a faster 5.44-second personal best at Santa Pod’s Main Event in June 2026.
How fast was the 5.503-second run?
The Festival of Power pass was recorded at 5.503 seconds, with a reported terminal speed of 192.94 mph (310.5 km/h). New Atlas also reported a 3.258-second eighth-mile split at 209.93 mph and a 4.388-second time at 1,000 feet at the event. These are figures for the same run, not separate records. New Atlas’s report on Force of Nature gives the results and describes the machine’s development.
Was it really the world’s second-fastest motorcycle?
The Force of Nature team said it had been told the Festival pass was the second-quickest motorcycle quarter-mile run in the world. Its comparison put Eric Teboul’s 4.9766-second pass ahead of it and said the run beat Larry McBride’s time by three thousandths of a second. This is a team-reported comparison of quarter-mile elapsed times; it should not be read as an independently confirmed ranking of motorcycle top speeds. The team’s report describes the ranking and Festival result.
“World record” can mean different things depending on the distance, start type, vehicle class and organization keeping the record. The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme recognizes standing- and flying-start quarter-mile categories within its motorcycle classes, but its regulations require ratification before a result becomes an FIM land-speed world record. The available sources do not establish that the Santa Pod drag-strip pass was ratified in an FIM category. The FIM’s 2025 Land Speed World Records Regulations set out the categories and ratification requirement.

Guinness’s “Fastest steam-powered motorcycle” title is a different measure: its page names William Barnes and a 2014 speed result. It is not the same record category as a standing quarter-mile drag-strip elapsed time. Guinness World Records’ steam-powered motorcycle entry identifies that separate title.
What is Force of Nature’s latest reported quarter-mile time?
In a June 10, 2026 update, the team reported a 5.44-second personal best at Santa Pod’s Main Event, improving on its previous 5.45-second best. The update gives the elapsed time but does not state a trap speed for that run, so the Festival of Power speed of 192.94 mph should not be attached to it. The team’s update reports the June result.

How does a steam-thrust motorcycle work?
Force of Nature does not use a conventional engine to drive its rear wheel. Before a run, a separate heating unit—the team’s “Mothership”—heats deionized, demineralized water in a pressure vessel. At launch, the rider operates two valves from a handlebar button, sending the pressurized hot water through two nozzles. It rapidly flashes into steam, and the escaping steam provides thrust.
New Atlas reports that the vessel holds 120 liters and that six heated tubes transfer heat into it. The heating unit’s burner is reported at 44 kW, using hydrogenated vegetable oil or kerosene as fuel. Reported operating conditions are 250–260 °C and 40–50 bar; the article gives an expansion ratio of 1,620:1 and a water discharge rate of roughly 40 liters per second. These are specifications reported by New Atlas, not independently measured test results.

Why is the bike a one-off engineering project?
Force of Nature is a bespoke, team-built machine rather than a motorcycle sold for road or track use. New Atlas describes successive changes including a longer chassis, revised riding position, reshaped carbon bodywork, a redesigned pressure vessel, nitrogen-actuated valves, updated manifolds and repositioned heating tubes. Those changes reflect the demands of a specialized thrust-powered drag bike; they do not make it a consumer conversion or production model.
The machine’s controls also impose a distinct challenge. Creator Graham Sykes told New Atlas, “The power is on or off,” and “You can’t moderate the flow rate of the valves. It’s 100% or nothing.” He said careful engineering can reduce risk, but the machine cannot be made completely safe. The same report describes the water system, controls and development work.
