The title’s “10” refers to a specific lineup that isn’t identified here, so it would be misleading to invent ten cars or attach specifications and sales histories to them. The useful distinction is that a Japanese model may be unavailable new in the United States, have been sold here only in a different version, or now be imported as an older used car. Those are not the same thing—and U.S. import eligibility depends on the individual vehicle, not just its nameplate.
What “not available in America” can mean
For a car, “unavailable” might mean it was never sold new in the United States, that its Japanese-market version differed from the U.S. version, or simply that it is no longer offered new. A car can also be absent from new-car showrooms yet eligible to enter the country later as an older vehicle. Without a confirmed roster and model-specific sources, none of those histories should be assigned to a particular car in a list of ten.
A third-party JDM eligibility list names candidates including the Nissan Skyline GT-R R33 and R34, Toyota Chaser, Honda Civic Type R EK9, Suzuki Cappuccino, and Autozam AZ-1. That list is a starting point for identifying possible subjects—not evidence that these are the intended ten, or proof of each model’s U.S. sales history or specifications. A final model-by-model feature needs a confirmed lineup and reliable sources for each car.
When can an older Japanese car be imported?
Vehicles at least 25 years old
NHTSA says a vehicle at least 25 years old may be imported without regard to compliance with applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The agency measures the 25-year period from the vehicle’s manufacture date, not simply its model year. If the permanent manufacturer label does not establish that date, NHTSA describes other documentation that may be used to show the vehicle’s age. Nonconforming vehicles under 25 years old
A nonconforming vehicle younger than 25 does not become permanently importable simply because it is popular or appears on a third-party list. NHTSA says the route generally requires a model-specific eligibility determination and importation by a Registered Importer (RI), or by someone who has contracted with an RI to bring the vehicle into compliance. Why a model name alone is not enough
NHTSA’s Skyline FAQ shows how narrow an eligibility determination can be: it identifies R33 Skyline GTS and GTR passenger cars manufactured from January 1, 1996, through June 30, 1998, as eligible through the documented pathway, and notes that a previous, broader grant was partially rescinded. Before buying or shipping a candidate, check its exact make, model, model year, manufacture date, and current eligibility status. Also treat federal safety eligibility as one part of the process: it does not settle separate EPA requirements, customs questions, or state title and registration rules. A useful list of ten should say what “deprived of” means for every entry: never sold new in the U.S., sold only in a different form, discontinued, or potentially available now as an older import. It should then support each car’s history and specifications with model-specific sources, rather than infer them from a JDM eligibility list. For import-minded readers, the relevant date is the individual vehicle’s manufacture date and the applicable entry date—not a broad claim that an entire model year is legal.
