Its electric version combines a flat-pack chassis, an integrated electric drive unit and a truck-as-a-service model aimed at remote producers rather than private owners.
It is best understood as a logistics system: a vehicle that can be shipped in a small volume, assembled near its destination and booked for individual loads. Published specifications describe useful capability, but availability, charging arrangements and operating territories remain dependent on the local Ox Delivers program.

What the OX electric truck is
Shell India described the OX in a 2018 release as the “world’s first flat-pack truck.” The concept targets remote-area freight and difficult surfaces, including deep sand, steep hills, marshy ground and steep river banks. Instead of shipping a complete truck, the manufacturer sends a kit that is assembled in the destination country.

The electric model is operated by Ox Delivers. Rather than requiring each grower or producer to buy a truck, the company offers transport capacity that can be reserved for a pickup slot. That distinction matters: the OX is primarily a commercial service vehicle, not a retail electric mini-truck with a published consumer order process.

Reported electric specification and capacity
New Atlas reported the following figures for the electric OX. They are published specifications, not an independently verified range test, and the hauling range should not be treated as a universal result for every load, route or climate.

The one-hundred-kilogram difference between the original and electric payload figures is small enough to invite confusion, but the models and sources are different. Treat the electric truck’s rating as its own specification.
How the flat-pack assembly works
Flat-pack shipping reduces the volume required to move trucks into regions that may have limited heavy-vehicle transport. Shell says a vehicle can be assembled from its kit in less than 12 hours. Autocar India reports that three people can complete the work without special tools.

- Assemble at destination. Dana’s 2022 sustainability report says the OX Delivers truck is put together in the country where it will operate.
- Use a small crew. Autocar India describes a three-person assembly process that does not require special tools.
- Put the completed truck into local service. The assembled vehicle can then be used for the regional freight operation instead of occupying shipping capacity as a complete truck.
The published material does not provide a component-by-component workshop manual, torque settings or a certification checklist. Operators should therefore obtain the current assembly documentation and local registration requirements from Ox Delivers before planning an installation.
Why its chassis suits rough roads
The OX’s off-road approach is more than simply fitting a battery-powered drivetrain to a road truck. Shell’s description specifically targets deep sands, steep gradients, marshes and river-bank approaches—places where low clearance, long body overhangs or fragile suspension can stop an ordinary delivery vehicle.
Autocar India identifies high ground clearance, short overhangs and long-travel independent suspension. Those features help the wheels follow uneven ground and reduce the chance of the body striking an obstacle at a breakover or departure angle. They do not make the truck unstoppable: mud depth, water crossings, tire choice, gradient, surface condition and the actual load still determine whether a route is passable.

Electric drive and maintenance implications
Dana documents an integrated Spicer Electrified eS4500i e-Drive Unit for OX Delivers. The compact system combines the motor, inverter, gearbox and software, and Dana describes it as capable of on-road and off-road operation.
Integration can reduce the number of separate powertrain assemblies that a local service team must package and diagnose. It does not eliminate the need for trained technicians, high-voltage safety procedures, battery inspection, cooling-system checks or spare-parts logistics. The available reports do not state charging power, charging time, battery warranty, water-wading limit or a maintenance interval, so those details must be confirmed for the specific operating country.

Where the OX electric truck operates
New Atlas reported that the first electric OX was shipped to Rwanda in early 2022. Ox Delivers uses a mobile app through which growers can book pickup slots, allowing producers to pay for transport capacity instead of owning and maintaining a vehicle.
The same report described a US$163 million franchise deal announced by Ox Delivers for Rwanda and expansion groundwork in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi. That amount and the planned country rollout are time-sensitive business claims, not proof that service is currently available in every named market. Prospective customers should confirm the active service area, booking process, tariffs and vehicle availability directly with Ox Delivers.

- Payload under real conditions: verify the permitted payload after accounting for passengers, body equipment, batteries and local road rules.
- Usable route range: ask whether the quoted distance assumes a particular load, speed, temperature or terrain, and identify charging points along the route.
- Local assembly and approval: confirm who performs the assembly, who signs off the completed vehicle and which registration or import documents are required.
- Service coverage: establish where high-voltage repairs, drivetrain diagnostics and replacement parts will be handled.
- Commercial model: determine whether the local operation sells trucks, leases them or only accepts bookings through the truck-as-a-service system.
- Verified geography: treat announcements about future expansion separately from an operating depot that is accepting bookings today.
Is the OX a practical fit?
For remote freight networks, the OX’s strongest advantages are logistical: a flat-pack shipment can reduce inbound transport volume, assembly can happen close to the work area, and producers can reserve capacity without buying a dedicated truck. Its electric drive unit also avoids carrying liquid fuel into locations where fuel distribution is difficult.
It is a poor match for buyers seeking a conventional showroom purchase, a published nationwide dealer network or a guaranteed long-distance range under heavy load. The available evidence supports a specialized, locally operated service vehicle whose success depends on assembly support, charging access and dependable regional maintenance.
