The complaint records the resignation date; the AP report is the contemporaneous account identifying the CEO transition. Neither source provides a direct statement from James or Moore explaining the resignation.

What is First Brands, and what was the bankruptcy context?
The Justice Department describes First Brands as an automotive aftermarket supplier that developed, marketed, and sold replacement brakes, filters, wipers, and lights under various brand names.
In a bankruptcy adversary complaint, the debtors alleged about $5 billion in annual net sales and approximately $12 million in cash in corporate bank accounts on the petition date. Those are statements in a court pleading, not independently verified financial findings. The complaint also discusses substantial financing liabilities.

What criminal charges were announced?
On January 29, 2026, the Justice Department said an indictment charged Patrick James and Edward James with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and multiple counts of wire fraud and bank fraud. The indictment alleges schemes involving invoices, collateral, financial statements, and concealed liabilities.
These are allegations in an indictment, not proof of guilt or a conviction. First Brands’ bankruptcy complaint also makes allegations about James and others; a complaint is one party’s claims, not a court finding. The sources cited here do not establish an adjudicated outcome.
