The redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger makes a credible case as a versatile midsize pickup: Ford offers two turbocharged engines, up to 7,500 pounds of towing capacity and up to 1,805 pounds of payload. Those are configuration-dependent maximums, not guarantees for every truck. Whether the Ranger is “just right” depends on the specific engine, equipment, payload label and the work you expect it to do.
This is a sourced review synthesis, not a firsthand test drive. Ford’s published specifications establish the capability claims; independent review coverage describes the Ranger as more comfortable to drive, while IIHS provides a useful but carefully scoped safety picture.
What’s new about the 2024 Ford Ranger?
The 2024 Ranger is a redesign for the North American market. Ford says it uses a fully boxed high-strength steel frame, with the wheelbase and track each extended by about two inches. Ford also moved the rear shocks and their mounts outboard of the frame rails. The company says these design changes were intended to improve bed space, stability, ride and control; those are manufacturer-stated goals, not independent measurements.
Ford’s May 23, 2023 announcement also says the Ranger was tested to the equivalent of more than 4.9 million customer miles before launch, across conditions including broken roads, towing and hauling, heat and cold. That is Ford’s test-equivalent claim, not an independently audited mileage figure.

What engine comes in the 2024 Ford Ranger?
Ford lists a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four as standard and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 as available. Both are paired with a 10-speed automatic, according to the manufacturer. Ford also lists available electronic shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive.

These are Ford’s published output figures, not independent instrumented test results. The V6’s higher stated output may suit buyers who prioritize power, but selecting an engine does not by itself establish the truck’s towing or payload limit; those depend on the vehicle’s full configuration.

How much can a 2024 Ford Ranger tow?
Ford advertises a maximum available towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. Its model-year towing selector lists that figure for specified 2.3-liter and 2.7-liter configurations when properly equipped. The Ranger Raptor’s listed maximum is 5,510 pounds. Do not treat 7,500 pounds as the rating for every Ranger: check the exact truck’s configuration and the applicable Ford towing guide.
Ford’s towing guide says the Trailer Tow Package (53R) is required for trailers over 3,500 pounds. It also states that cargo, passengers, accessories and configuration affect the allowable load, and that neither the vehicle’s gross combined weight rating (GCWR) nor its loaded-trailer limit may be exceeded. A bumper-only setup must not tow more than 3,500 pounds.

Trailer size and required equipment
Ford lists a trailer frontal-area limit of 30 square feet without the Tow Package and 55 square feet with it. Frontal area is one of the guide’s limits, alongside weight, so a trailer that falls below the weight maximum may still need to meet the applicable area limit.
The receiver package does not include a hitch ball or ball mount. Before towing, make sure the equipment fits the receiver and trailer coupler and is rated for the load. Verify receiver size, ball diameter, mount or drop, tongue rating and trailer rating rather than assuming one ball-and-mount setup fits every Ranger and trailer.

How to check a particular Ranger
- Identify the truck’s configuration. Use the vehicle’s door certification label, which Ford says contains axle information useful for identifying the correct towing-guide configuration.
- Confirm the equipment. Check whether the truck has Trailer Tow Package 53R if the trailer weighs more than 3,500 pounds.
- Check the actual load. Account for occupants, cargo and accessories, then compare the loaded combination with the applicable Ford limits and the truck’s labels.
- Match the hitch components. Select a ball and mount compatible with both the receiver and coupler, with suitable ratings for the trailer and tongue load.
What is the 2024 Ranger’s payload?
Ford gives a maximum available payload of 1,805 pounds. That is a manufacturer-stated maximum, not the payload of every trim or individual truck. Payload must cover the load carried by the vehicle, including occupants, cargo and accessories; towing also adds tongue weight to the truck’s load. Use the payload label on the specific vehicle rather than relying on the advertised maximum when deciding what it can carry.

IIHS lists Good ratings for the driver-side and passenger-side small-overlap front evaluations and an Acceptable rating in its updated side test. The scope matters: IIHS says these ratings are based on tests of a 2025 Ranger crew cab and apply to model years 2024–26. They should not be described as tests performed on a 2024 truck.

IIHS also lists blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking as optional equipment. Availability can vary by configuration, so confirm features on the specific vehicle rather than assuming they are standard across the lineup.
Is the 2024 Ford Ranger a good truck?
Independent reviews offer a favorable picture of its everyday manners: Edmunds describes the Ranger as more comfortable to drive and notes its driver-assistance features and towing and hauling capacity. Car and Driver reports the 7,500-pound maximum tow figure and payload figures that vary by drivetrain. Those are publisher assessments and reported specifications, not firsthand findings in this review.
The Ranger’s appeal is clearest for a buyer who wants a midsize truck and expects to balance daily usability with occasional hauling, towing or outdoor use. Its headline capacity figures are useful starting points, but they do not answer whether a particular truck will handle a particular job. Check the actual payload label, tow equipment, ratings and hitch setup before buying or towing.
