The company’s first production car was the 350 GT; the Miura followed in 1966 and established Lamborghini’s early supercar identity. He founded the marque, but engineers and designers—including Gian Paolo Dallara, Giotto Bizzarrini and Franco Scaglione—did key work on its first cars.
How Ferruccio Lamborghini built his businesses
Lamborghini trained as a mechanic. After the Second World War, he turned surplus military equipment into tractors, building the industrial experience and capital that later made car manufacturing possible. Automobili Lamborghini describes the car company as his third successful business venture, after tractors and heating and cooling systems.
Tractors came first
At the end of 1947, Lamborghini set out to make an economical but powerful tractor suited to small farms, using surplus war equipment. The Carioca was introduced publicly on 3 February 1948, according to the Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum. In 1951, after buying a larger site, he established Trattori Lamborghini as a production company.
Heating and cooling before cars
In the 1950s, Lamborghini expanded into heating and cooling. The museum’s history says he established a burner and air-conditioning company after a 1959 trip to the United States. These ventures preceded his move into automobile manufacturing.

When did Lamborghini start making cars?
The car project began in late 1962, when Lamborghini told his staff he intended to build automobiles. Automobili Lamborghini was established in Sant’Agata Bolognese on 7 May 1963, according to the company’s official milestones. The distinction matters: the company was founded in 1963, while its first production car arrived the following year.
From the 350 GTV to the 350 GT
The 350 GTV, shown in October 1963, was the first concept and prototype. It was not the first production Lamborghini. That was the 350 GT, which entered production in 1964. The company credits Franco Scaglione with the GTV’s design and Paolo Stanzani with technical improvements to the production GT.

Lamborghini organized and financed the new company, but the cars were the work of a team. The museum identifies Gian Paolo Dallara as project manager and Giotto Bizzarrini as the 350’s engine designer. Calling Ferruccio the founder is accurate; crediting him personally with all the engineering or design is not.
Why the Miura became a landmark
Introduced in 1966, the Miura was Lamborghini’s first supercar, as the company describes it. It paired a 4.0-liter V12 with a rear-transverse engine layout, and Bertone designed its body. The Miura helped define the young company’s identity, but its technical and styling achievements should be attributed to the people and firms responsible for them, not to Ferruccio alone.

Did Ferruccio Lamborghini really argue with Enzo Ferrari?
A popular origin story says Ferruccio complained about a clutch in his Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari insulted him, and Ferruccio responded by starting a rival car company. The exact exchange—and the claim that it caused the car venture—is not substantiated by the official Lamborghini and museum histories cited here. Those accounts describe an entrepreneur who already owned sports cars and place his decision to build automobiles in late 1962. Treat the confrontation as an unverified anecdote, not established fact.
When did Ferruccio Lamborghini leave the car business?
His departure happened in stages, not on a single date. In 1972 he sold 51% of Automobili Lamborghini. In 1973 he sold the tractor business to SAME, and in 1974 he retired from industrial activity, according to the company and museum timelines. He died in 1993.
