Nissan introduced its first-generation ProPILOT system on the Serena in Japan in August 2016, a year before the title’s 2017 date. It was a single-lane highway driver-assistance system—not a car that could drive without a person supervising it. Nissan’s “first” claim was narrower: it said it was the first Japanese automaker to offer automatic steering, acceleration and braking together for single-lane highway use.
When did the Serena with ProPILOT launch?
Nissan announced the new Serena and ProPILOT on 13 July 2016, with sales scheduled to begin in Japan in late August. Nissan later reported that the Serena equipped with ProPILOT launched in Japan in August 2016. So although this topic is often framed as a “2017 Nissan Serena,” ProPILOT’s Serena debut was in 2016—not 2017. Nissan’s July 2016 announcement and its 2017 Sustainability Report document the timing.
What did the original ProPILOT do?
Nissan designed first-generation ProPILOT for highway driving in a single lane. It combined several forms of assistance:
- Following distance: It could adjust speed to maintain a distance from the vehicle ahead, based on the speed selected by the driver.
- Lane support: It could help keep the Serena centered in its lane.
- Acceleration and braking: It could control speed and brake the vehicle to a full stop when necessary.
- Moving off again: After a full stop, the Serena could hold its position. To resume in traffic, the driver had to touch a switch again or lightly press the accelerator, according to Nissan’s 1 February 2017 explanation.
That describes assistance with specific driving tasks, not unrestricted automated driving. Nissan’s Japanese owner-facing ProPILOT information says, in translation, that ProPILOT “is a system to support the driver’s driving operation, not an autonomous driving system.” It also tells drivers to remain responsible for safe driving, monitor conditions and not rely on the system alone. The stated use was expressways and highways, including cruising and slower congestion—not driverless travel on city streets.

What does “first” mean in Nissan’s claim?
Nissan made two related but distinct claims, each with a defined scope:
- In its 2016 announcement, Nissan said it was the first Japanese automaker to offer the automatic combination of steering, accelerator and braking for single-lane highway use.
- In its 2017 Sustainability Report, Nissan described the Serena as the world’s first minivan to feature this kind of technology.
These are Nissan’s category-specific claims about highway driver assistance. They do not establish that the Serena was Japan’s first fully autonomous or driverless passenger car. In the 2016 announcement, Nissan called ProPILOT an “autonomous drive technology designed for highway use in single-lane traffic”; the owner-facing guidance makes clear that the driver still had responsibility for safe operation.

What did Nissan report about customer uptake?
In a 1 February 2017 announcement, Nissan said that more than 60% of Serena customers in Japan had opted for ProPILOT. That is the company’s reported figure; the announcement does not establish an independently audited adoption rate. Nissan had also reported more than 30,000 orders since launch in December 2016, another company-reported historical count rather than an independent sales statistic. Nissan’s February 2017 announcement and its December 2016 release give those figures.

No—not if “self-driving” means a vehicle that can take over the journey without a driver supervising it. The Serena with original ProPILOT could assist with speed, braking and lane position in single-lane highway traffic, but the driver remained responsible and had to respond when the system required input, including to resume moving after a stop. The accurate description is an early Japan-market car with highway driver assistance and a narrowly defined “first” claim, not a driverless car.
