Ferrari’s application, titled “Series hybrid car,” sets out a car powertrain rather than an isolated engine. It describes two mechanically independent combustion-engine and generator assemblies, electric motors connected to the drive wheels, electrical energy storage, and one outlet pipe receiving exhaust from both engines. The patent record is the primary source for the proposed architecture.
Automotive reports describe the illustrated combustion engines as two six-cylinder units arranged in a Y-like layout, each with its own crankshaft. AUTO BILD reports a 45-degree angle between the banks. Those details describe the illustrated concept, not a confirmed production specification. How the proposed series hybrid would work
Two engines generate electricity
Each combustion engine is mechanically connected only to its own generator. The patent describes the two engine-generator assemblies as mechanically independent of one another and of the drive wheels. In other words, the engines are not described as directly turning the wheels.

Electric motors propel the car
Electric motors connected to the drive wheels provide traction. The patent also describes electrical energy storage, which can hold generator output and energy recovered during braking. That is the defining distinction in the application: the engines make electricity, while electric motors provide wheel propulsion.
One exhaust outlet serves both engines
The patent abstract specifies a common outlet pipe that receives exhaust from both combustion engines. It also discusses control options in which one or both engine-generator assemblies operate according to electrical demand, and the engines may run synchronously or asynchronously. The application presents these as possible control choices with different sound characteristics; it does not establish how the system would sound in a real vehicle.

Why “V12” needs a qualification
“V12” is a useful shorthand for the twelve cylinders described in reports, but it can imply a single conventional engine. This proposal is different: it uses two separate six-cylinder engine-generator units in a series-hybrid system. A conventional engine mechanically drives the wheels; in the patent’s described architecture, electric motors do that job.
It is also not the same arrangement as a parallel hybrid, where an engine can mechanically contribute to wheel propulsion alongside an electric motor. The patent instead describes the combustion engines as generator power sources, with electric motors connected to the drive wheels.

What the filing does—and does not—confirm
The US patent record identifies Ferrari SpA as the original assignee and Fabrizio Favaretto as the inventor. It lists September 19, 2024 as the priority date, September 17, 2025 as the filing date, and March 19, 2026 as the publication date. The record lists the application as pending; patent status can change as prosecution continues. The record provides those bibliographic details.
The filing establishes that Ferrari disclosed this powertrain concept in a patent application. It does not confirm an upcoming model, production timing, engine displacement, output, fuel economy, efficiency, or real-world sound. AUTO BILD notes that a patented idea does not necessarily reach production. Without a production announcement or vehicle data, performance comparisons with existing Ferrari powertrains would be speculation.
