The milestone is easy to misread: Ferrari built the F50 to mark its 50th anniversary, but the company’s anniversary came in 1997, two years after the car’s reveal. Its case as an underappreciated halo car is ultimately an argument, not a measured consensus—but its engineering makes that case compelling.
Why the F50’s 30th anniversary falls in 2025
Ferrari presented the F50 at the Geneva Motor Show in 1995 to celebrate the company’s fiftieth anniversary. The car arrived two years before that anniversary, which fell in 1997. So 2025 marks 30 years since the F50’s presentation—not 30 years since Ferrari’s anniversary itself. Ferrari’s F50 history is the source for that chronology.
What makes the F50 a Ferrari halo car
Ferrari places the F50 within its limited-edition Supercar lineage, alongside the 288 GTO, F40, Enzo and LaFerrari. In its 2023 Annual Report and Form 20-F, the company calls these cars “the highest expression of Ferrari road car performance at the time,” and says they often introduce technology for future models. That framing makes the F50 a halo car in the broad sense: a rare, high-performance road car intended to represent the brand’s capabilities.
The F50’s particular claim to distinction is its effort to bring a race-car-like engineering concept to the road. Ferrari paired a naturally aspirated V12 derived from Formula One experience with a carbon-fibre monocoque, using the engine as a stressed member of the chassis. It also came with a removable Targa roof, push-rod suspension, and no ABS or power steering. Together, those choices put mechanical involvement ahead of convenience.

Why the F50 can seem underappreciated
“Underappreciated” is a judgment, not a fact established by Ferrari’s history or annual report. Those sources do not measure public opinion or compare the F50’s reputation with other Ferraris. A more defensible way to make the case is to look at what the car represents: a limited-edition Ferrari that deliberately carried race-derived ideas into a road-going package, with fewer driver aids and more physical demands than a comfort-oriented car.
Its place in Ferrari’s Supercar lineage also creates a useful frame for understanding it. The F50 sits between the F40 and Enzo in the company’s named sequence, but the available Ferrari material does not establish a full specification-by-specification comparison of those cars. Rather than treating it as a lesser entry in a celebrated line, the F50 is best understood on its own terms: a car built around a naturally aspirated V12, a structural carbon-fibre tub, open-air flexibility and a deliberately unfiltered driving experience.

How many Ferrari F50s were made?
Ferrari reports that 349 F50s were built. In its F50 Legacy Tour account, the company says the number was chosen because it was “one less than the demand from its intended market.” That is Ferrari’s explanation for the production figure, rather than an independently documented measure of total demand.

Ferrari’s 2025 Legacy Tour account lists a dedicated Pirelli P Zero Corsa System version for the tour cars, with 245/35 R18 tires at the front and 335/30 R18 at the rear. These are the sizes Ferrari reports for those cars; the account does not establish that every F50 has the same fitment. Owners should verify the correct specification for an individual car before ordering tires.
