Ferrari reportedly asked the FIA to clarify how Mercedes’ front wing closed after the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. That was not the same as a formal protest, and follow-up reporting said the matter did not become a formal investigation. The FIA’s Nikolas Tombazis later described the behaviour as an unintentional mechanical issue that brought no advantage.
What Ferrari reportedly asked the FIA about
SPORTbible reported on March 24, 2026, that Ferrari had approached the FIA over the operation of Mercedes’ front wing. The concern was described as a possible “two-phase” closure: footage appeared to show the wing taking longer than expected to move between its fixed positions. The report framed the episode as a potential rules concern, not proof that Mercedes had run an illegal car. SPORTbible’s March 24 report also did not establish that Ferrari had lodged a formal protest.

What the 400-millisecond rule and 800-millisecond estimate mean
The rule discussed in the reports sets a maximum 400-millisecond transition between the front wing’s two fixed positions. SPORTbible cited an estimate of roughly 800 milliseconds based on observers interpreting footage, but said the FIA had not confirmed that timing. It should not be treated as measured telemetry, an official finding, or proof of a violation. The report does not reproduce the full regulation text or its article number, so it cannot support a more detailed legal interpretation.
The FIA’s current Formula One regulations are the primary reference for the governing rules; the contemporaneous reporting is the source for how the 400-millisecond limit was described in this dispute.

Why the incident was not described as a formal investigation
On March 26, Grandprix.com reported that the issue had not escalated to a formal investigation and that Mercedes had adjusted the wing before the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. The report said the change was understood to address reliability concerns. That account distinguishes an informal clarification or team-level resolution from a formal proceeding before the stewards. Grandprix.com’s March 26 report describes the reported adjustment and handling of the query.
The FIA’s 2026 Japanese Grand Prix document archive lists event records published from March 25 through March 29. The reviewed list does not identify a wing-specific steward decision. That absence is not proof of a private investigation, nor is it a comprehensive FIA ruling on the wing’s legality.

What Nikolas Tombazis said about Mercedes’ front wing
In follow-up coverage published March 28, Grandprix.com reported comments by FIA single-seater technical director Nikolas Tombazis, attributed to Italy’s Formula Passion. Tombazis characterized the behaviour as an unintentional mechanical issue that did not provide an advantage:

He also described the FIA’s approach to such cases:
“When we are sure that there is no intent, we resolve such issues together with the teams, without bringing the matter to the stewards, so as not to create precedents over minor things.”

Mercedes driver George Russell was quoted as saying, “It was unintentional and certainly not an advantage. In fact, it was a problem.” These are reported explanations, not a published technical decision adjudicating the wing. Grandprix.com’s March 28 report carries the comments.

Was Mercedes found to have an illegal front wing?
The reports cited here do not establish that Mercedes was found guilty of running an illegal front wing. They describe Ferrari seeking clarification, an unconfirmed visual timing estimate, a reported adjustment before Suzuka, and Tombazis’s account of a non-advantageous mechanical problem. They do not include a direct Ferrari statement, a Mercedes technical statement, telemetry, or a published FIA technical ruling on this wing. Those limits matter: an allegation or query is not the same as a finding of illegality.
