The Chevrolet Suburban has 12 generations in the year-range convention used by iSeeCars, beginning with the 1935 model year. The current, 12th generation began with model year 2021 and continues through the 2026 model year. Generation labels can vary among references, so the ranges below are attributed to iSeeCars rather than presented as a universal classification.
Chevrolet Suburban generations by model year
This chronology follows iSeeCars’ generation ranges. The major redesign years identified by Cars.com are 1992, 2000, 2007, 2015, and 2021; they are useful reference points, but do not replace the full generation labels in the table.

1935: the Carryall begins
The lineage starts with the 1935-model Chevrolet Suburban Carryall. Cars.com identifies it as the debut model year, while GM Heritage describes the early Suburban as a truck-type passenger vehicle. The concept paired a commercial-vehicle foundation with room for passengers; GM’s historical material describes early examples with two doors and three seating rows. 1941: a new body style
The second-generation range begins in 1941, when a new body style arrived. The year-range table reflects iSeeCars’ convention; the major historical transition is also noted in GM’s 1999 information kit.
1967–1972: the three-door layout
The sixth generation is the unusual three-door era: one door on the driver’s side and two on the passenger’s side. This is a useful visual clue when distinguishing these model years from the four-door Suburbans that followed.

1973: four doors arrive
For model year 1973, the all-new Suburban offered the first four-door model, according to GM’s historical information kit. That makes 1973 a clear dividing line: it begins the long seventh-generation range and the four-door layout familiar to later Suburbans. Cars.com also identifies 1973 as the first four-door model year.

1992 onward: modern redesign reference points
GM’s archive records a next-generation Suburban for 1992. Cars.com identifies subsequent redesign years as 2000, 2007, 2015, and 2021. These dates help orient a vehicle within the later history, while the generation ranges above remain the iSeeCars classification.

What generation is the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban?
The 2026 Chevrolet Suburban is in the 12th generation, which began with model year 2021. Chevrolet describes the 2026 Suburban as a full-size SUV. Its published figures are a model-year snapshot and depend on configuration: eight seats are standard, with seven- and nine-seat configurations available; the listed engines are a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 rated at 355 hp, a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 rated at 420 hp, and a 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel rated at 305 hp. Chevrolet also lists maximum available towing of 8,200 pounds, up to 144.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, a length of 226.3 inches, and a starting MSRP of $63,700 for the LS 2WD. “Generation” is a reference classification, not a single universally applied numbering system. This article uses iSeeCars’ 12-generation year ranges; Cars.com independently identifies the twelfth generation as current and lists the same major later redesign years. GM’s archive corroborates selected milestones, not a complete official twelve-row generation chart. When identifying a specific vehicle, use its model year alongside the generation label, and treat the year ranges as the more precise reference.
