Ferrari presented the F40 as a 40th-anniversary celebration built around turbo power and composite materials; McLaren conceived the F1 as its first road car, with a carbon-fibre monocoque and a reported 627 horsepower. The comparison is clearest when judged by purpose, engineering and competition legacy—not by a definitive speed verdict unsupported by matched factory figures.
Why Ferrari built the F40 and McLaren built the F1
The F40 was Ferrari’s anniversary statement
Ferrari framed the F40 as a celebration of the company’s 40th anniversary. Its historical account emphasizes the car’s turbo engine and composite materials. Ferrari’s 2025 press release about the SC40 identifies the F40 as unveiled in July 1987. Ferrari’s F40 history and the 2025 SC40 release provide the company’s account of that origin.
The F1 was McLaren’s first road car
McLaren says the F1 was conceived in 1988 and realized in 1992, and describes it as the company’s first road car. Where the F40 marked an anniversary for an established road-car maker, the F1 marked McLaren’s entry into road-car production. McLaren’s F1 legacy page outlines that timeline.
How their engineering identities differ
The F40’s defining idea in Ferrari’s historical account is a turbocharged engine paired with composite construction. McLaren’s retrospective highlights the F1’s carbon-fibre monocoque and reports 627 horsepower. These details illustrate distinct engineering priorities, but they are not a complete, like-for-like specification sheet: the manufacturer sources do not supply equally detailed information for both cars. McLaren’s retrospective gives the F1 figures and construction detail.

Which one is faster?
A definitive answer is not established by the available manufacturer sources. They do not provide a matched, dated set of acceleration and top-speed specifications for both standard road cars. A fair numerical comparison would need period factory figures for each exact variant, with units and measurement conditions stated. Mixing a record claim, a race-car result or a figure from a different variant with a standard road-car specification would not settle the comparison.
The F1’s Le Mans legacy belongs to its racing derivative
The McLaren F1 GTR, a competition version derived from the road car, won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. That is a major part of the F1’s story, but it was the GTR—not a standard road-going F1—that achieved the victory. McLaren recounts the result in its racing heritage history and F1 retrospective.

Which car is rarer?
McLaren reports that 106 F1 examples were made. The manufacturer sources cited here do not establish a comparable F40 production total, so they do not support a verified numerical rarity contest between the two. The F1’s stated production count is a useful fact about that model, not proof that it is rarer than the F40.

Which should you choose?
There is no objective winner in the evidence presented here. The F40 is the natural choice for someone drawn to Ferrari’s anniversary story, turbo-engine identity and composite construction. The F1 will resonate more with someone interested in McLaren’s first road car, its carbon-fibre monocoque and the racing history of the F1 GTR. If the deciding factor is which standard car is faster, use a reliable period comparison that specifies variants and test conditions rather than treating the available manufacturer histories as a head-to-head test.
