Ferrari’s published specifications give the 488 more power and torque; the 458 has the higher maximum engine speed. The 488 GTB replaced the 458 Italia in 2015.
What is the difference between the 458 Italia and 488 GTB?
The 458 Italia pairs a 4,497 cc naturally aspirated V8 with a 9,000 rpm maximum engine speed. The 488 GTB’s 3,902 cc V8 is turbocharged and has an 8,000 rpm maximum engine speed. Ferrari’s technical comparison lists the 488 with higher peak power and torque, while the 458’s larger engine is naturally aspirated. Ferrari’s 458 Italia model information and its 488 GTB model information provide model context.
| Specification | Ferrari 458 Italia | Ferrari 488 GTB |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 90-degree, naturally aspirated V8 | 90-degree, turbocharged V8 |
| Displacement | 4,497 cc | 3,902 cc |
| Maximum power | 570 CV | 670 CV at 8,000 rpm |
| Maximum torque | 540 Nm at 6,000 rpm | 760 Nm at 3,000 rpm; ANSA specifies seventh gear |
| Maximum engine speed | 9,000 rpm | 8,000 rpm |
These are figures from Ferrari’s 2015 technical presentation; the torque gear condition for the 488 is specified in ANSA’s period specification report. Ferrari states the 488’s maximum power figure using 98 RON fuel. CV is the unit used in Ferrari’s comparison and is retained here rather than converted.
Is the 488 GTB faster than the 458 Italia?
Ferrari and period reporting publish strong performance figures for the 488, but the available figures are not a same-source, like-for-like test of both cars. ANSA’s 2015 488 GTB specification report lists 0–100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 8.3 seconds, and a maximum speed of over 330 km/h. These are period published specifications, not independent comparative test results. The evidence here does not establish a matching 458 test figure, so it supports the 488’s published claims but not a measured head-to-head verdict.

How did the 488 GTB succeed the 458 Italia?
Ferrari’s 2015 prospectus says the 458 Italia launched in 2009 and that its production ended in May 2015. The 488 GTB launched in March 2015 as its replacement. It is therefore the next model in Ferrari’s line, not simply a parallel alternative to the 458.
What Ferrari claimed about the 488’s design
In its February 2015 launch announcement, Ferrari claimed the 488 produced 50% more aerodynamic downforce than the 458 while reducing drag. The announcement described a double front spoiler, side “base bleed” intakes, active rear aerodynamics, a blown spoiler, and underbody vortex generators. Ferrari also claimed a 1:23 lap at Fiorano. These are manufacturer launch claims, not independently verified comparisons.

Which one should you buy?
The specifications clarify the engineering choice, but they do not establish which car an individual driver will prefer or which is the better used-car purchase. A buyer should compare specific cars rather than infer condition or ownership costs from model specifications.
- Consider the 458’s character if: you specifically want its naturally aspirated V8 and higher listed engine-speed ceiling.
- Consider the 488’s specification if: its turbocharged engine, higher published power and torque, and period performance claims match your priorities.
- Assess any used example on its own merits: verify its condition, service history, and relevant maintenance records, and check current prices and ownership requirements in your market.
The available evidence does not settle regional used values, reliability, maintenance burden, insurance, parts availability, or owner satisfaction. Those considerations require current, market-specific information and an inspection of the individual car.

Are the published economy and weight figures directly comparable?
The 488 GTB’s period specification sheet lists a dry weight of 1,370 kg and a running-order weight of 1,475 kg with optional lightweight equipment. It also gives fuel consumption of 11.4 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions of 260 g/km under the combined ECE+EUDC cycle with the HELE system. Those are condition-specific historical figures, not guarantees of real-world consumption or values that can be compared broadly across markets without matching test conditions.
