The Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is a naturally aspirated V12 grand tourer whose headline figures depend on the market and source: Ferrari Australia and New Zealand quoted 456 kW, 0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and a top speed above 330 km/h in its 18 July 2006 release. Its F1-SuperFast transmission is an electronically controlled automated manual, not a conventional automatic, even when AUTO mode is selected.
What the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano is
The 599 GTB Fiorano belongs to Ferrari’s high-performance grand-touring line. The defining mechanical feature in the available factory material is a naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12. RM Sotheby’s description of a 2006 example says that engine was derived from the Enzo powerplant and rated at 612 horsepower. That horsepower figure belongs to the catalog description of that car and model; it should not be substituted for every market’s factory technical specification.

The name combines the 599 designation with GTB, Ferrari’s grand-touring terminology, and Fiorano, the company’s test circuit. In practical terms, the car pairs long-distance GT intent with the response and sound expected of a high-revving, naturally aspirated V12. Exact equipment, calibration and documentation can vary by market, model year and build specification, so a specification sheet should always be checked against the individual car.

Ferrari Australia and New Zealand’s press release dated 18 July 2006 gives the clearest market-specific performance statement in the available factory material. It describes the 599 GTB Fiorano as a 456 kW V12, quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and says the top speed exceeds 330 km/h.

These numbers are not interchangeable test results. The 456 kW, acceleration and top-speed claims are tied to the Australian and New Zealand release, while 612 horsepower is catalog wording for a particular 2006 car. Different markets may publish power in different units or use different test conventions. When comparing two cars, retain the source and market alongside each number rather than presenting one figure as a universal global specification.
Is the Ferrari 599 GTB an automatic?
No. The common F1-SuperFast installation is an electronically controlled automated manual gearbox. It uses steering-wheel levers and computer-controlled actuation, but its operating principle is that of a manual transmission whose clutch and gear changes are automated. Selecting AUTO changes how the system manages those operations; it does not turn the gearbox into a conventional torque-converter automatic.
The 599 GTB owner’s manual makes the distinction explicit: “Even though the system can be used in ‘AUTO’ mode, it should not be considered an automatic gearbox.” That wording is important when buying, insuring or servicing the car. A driver expecting the behavior of a traditional automatic may find the shift strategy, take-up and low-speed responses different, particularly because the system is still managing a manual-type gearbox.

What the steering-wheel controls do
The F1-SuperFast system is operated through steering-wheel levers. The exact mode and indicator layout should be confirmed in the manual for the car’s market and equipment, but the basic distinction is straightforward:
- In a manually commanded mode, the driver requests upshifts and downshifts with the levers.
- In AUTO mode, the control system chooses shift timing while retaining the automated-manual hardware.
- The transmission label does not establish that a car has a traditional manual gearbox; verify the equipment fitted to the individual vehicle.
Does the 599 GTB have a manual gearbox?
Two transmission descriptions may appear in 599 GTB listings: the six-speed F1-SuperFast automated manual and a traditional six-speed manual where that configuration is documented. The available material directly substantiates the F1 system and one F1-equipped auction example, but it does not provide a complete production or market comparison of both variants. Do not infer rarity, value or production totals from a listing that merely says “manual.” Ask for photographs of the shift mechanism, the build specification and factory or specialist documentation.
| Question when comparing cars | F1-SuperFast automated manual | Traditional six-speed manual |
|---|---|---|
| What is established here? | Owner’s manual identifies an electronically controlled gearbox operated with steering-wheel levers. | A traditional six-speed configuration is documented in some descriptions, but comprehensive data are not stated. |
| Is it a conventional automatic? | No; the owner’s manual specifically says AUTO mode should not be considered an automatic gearbox. | No; it is a driver-operated manual transmission. |
| What should a buyer verify? | Gearbox type, control hardware, service documentation and the correct manual edition. | Factory configuration and matching documentation; availability and market differences are not stated. |
How often does a Ferrari 599 need servicing?
The owner’s manual sets a time-based minimum that applies even when the car has covered little mileage: “It is required to have the periodic maintenance services performed at least once a year, even if the specified mileage limit has not been reached.” In other words, low annual use does not remove the yearly service requirement. The manual’s wording does not supply a universal cost or a single mileage schedule for every market, so an owner should follow the service schedule and updates applicable to the vehicle’s market, model year and serial number.

How to use service records
Look for dated invoices or dealer records that identify the car, the work performed and the servicing business. A continuous timeline is more useful than a single recent stamp because it shows whether the annual requirement was observed during periods of storage or low use.

One RM Sotheby’s catalog provides an example-specific timeline for a 2006 car: its records document dealer maintenance in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2023 and 2024. The catalog also reports a January 2026 visit at which the wiper linkage and air-conditioning control unit were replaced. Those entries describe that individual car only. They are not evidence of typical 599 GTB service intervals, common failure rates or model-wide reliability.
Questions to ask before purchase
- Which years are supported by invoices, and are there unexplained gaps?
- Does each entry identify the vehicle and the mileage or date?
- Were work and parts supplied by an authorized Ferrari dealer or a specialist familiar with the model?
- Are transmission, electrical and body repairs described in enough detail to verify what was actually replaced?
- Has the car received the annual service during periods when it was driven only occasionally?
Finding the correct Ferrari 599 GTB owner’s manual
The owner’s or use-and-maintenance manual is a model-specific physical product, not a generic Ferrari handbook. Match the listing to the car’s market, language, year, equipment and serial-number applicability before ordering. The parts catalog shows that versions vary, including applicability notes for HGTE cars and particular serial-number ranges.

A model-specific catalog such as Eurospares can help identify the appropriate documentation listing, but the listing itself must be checked against the vehicle. Confirm the following details with the seller or catalog entry:
- Market and language of the manual.
- Model year and printing or revision information.
- Whether the manual covers the car’s equipment, including any HGTE specification.
- Applicable serial-number range.
- Whether the item is an original owner’s/use-and-maintenance manual rather than a generic workshop reference.
The manual also notes that specifications and illustrations reflect the information current at printing and may change as technical updates are introduced. For an update or uncertainty, check with an authorized Ferrari dealer rather than assuming that an older book covers every later revision.

Parts, servicing and warranty considerations
Ferrari’s manual recommends genuine Ferrari parts obtained through an authorized Ferrari dealer. That recommendation is practical as well as documentary: correct part numbers and fitment can depend on market, equipment and serial range. Using a model-specific catalog to identify a component is not the same as proving that a particular item is currently in stock or suitable for every 599 GTB.

The manual says repairs using non-genuine parts may void the Ferrari warranty, but warranty consequences depend on the applicable vehicle warranty terms and jurisdiction. Treat that statement as a reason to check the written warranty for the specific car, not as a universal legal rule for every repair or country.
Aluminum space-frame damage and body repairs
The 599 GTB uses an aluminum space-frame chassis. The owner’s manual says chassis work requires specially trained personnel and equipment tested by Ferrari. After accident damage, it recommends contacting the Ferrari Service Network.
This is a safety-critical distinction from routine cosmetic work. A shop that can refinish aluminum panels is not automatically equipped to measure, straighten or repair the underlying space frame. Before authorizing structural work, ask the facility to document:
- Its experience with Ferrari aluminum space-frame vehicles.
- The measuring, jigging and welding equipment used for structural repairs.
- How the repair will be checked against Ferrari specifications.
- Which parts are being replaced, and whether they are genuine or approved alternatives.
- Photographs and measurements before, during and after the repair.
For a used-car inspection, obtain accident and repair records and have a qualified Ferrari specialist examine the chassis. A clean-looking exterior cannot by itself establish that an earlier structural repair was performed to the required standard.
A practical buying and ownership checklist
Confirm the specification
- Record the vehicle identification and serial information.
- Identify whether the car has the F1-SuperFast automated manual or a documented traditional manual configuration.
- Match the market-specific performance and equipment information to the car rather than copying a figure from another region.
- Check whether HGTE or other equipment affects the correct manual and parts listings.
Audit the documentation
- Request the owner’s/use-and-maintenance manual that matches language, year, equipment and serial range.
- Build a dated service timeline and investigate gaps.
- Separate factory claims, auction-catalog descriptions and seller statements in your notes.
- Do not treat one auction car’s repair history as a prediction of every 599 GTB’s reliability.
Plan specialist support
- Use an authorized Ferrari dealer or a specialist with demonstrated experience of the 599 GTB for scheduled maintenance.
- Use genuine parts where the manual or warranty terms require them, and retain invoices showing part numbers.
- Route aluminum space-frame repairs through trained personnel with Ferrari-tested equipment.
- Ask the servicing business to document work, mileage, dates and any follow-up inspection needed.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The published material establishes a very fast, naturally aspirated 6.0-litre V12 grand tourer, a market-specific 456 kW/3.7-second/over-330-km/h performance claim, and an F1-SuperFast automated manual that is not a conventional automatic. It also establishes an annual minimum service requirement, Ferrari’s preference for genuine parts, and specialist requirements for aluminum space-frame repairs.
It does not establish a population-wide reliability rate, typical annual ownership cost, production total, current parts prices, live manual availability or market values for different transmission configurations. Those questions require evidence tied to a specific car, region and date. Keeping those limits visible is essential when evaluating a 599 GTB, because the quality of its records and repairs can matter as much as the headline specification.
