Ferrari focused the update on aero and vehicle-dynamics integration, with revised airflow, adjustable front aerodynamic balance, brake and control changes, and new tire specifications. Ferrari also announced upgrade kits for existing 488 Challenge cars.
What is the Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo?
Ferrari presented the 488 Challenge Evo at the 2019 Finali Mondiali at Mugello. It was developed for Ferrari’s single-make Challenge competition, with updates intended to improve performance and consistency in race conditions. Ferrari’s 2019 model-history entry lists a 3,902 cm³ 90-degree V8, 670 CV at 8,000 rpm, and a weight of 1,340 kg. That entry does not specify the weight convention, so the figure should not be read as a stated dry or curb weight.
What changed from the 488 Challenge?
The Evo’s changes are best understood as a connected package: aerodynamic balance, tire specification, braking, electronic controls, and cockpit usability. Ferrari described the update as a way to give drivers more control over setup while refining the car for competition.
Aerodynamics and balance
Ferrari revised the front splitter, bumper and flicks, along with airflow management at the front and rear. A new deflector near the mirror directs air toward the intercoolers. The key functional change is that drivers can adjust front downforce independently of rear downforce, without changing ride height. Ferrari’s 2020 technical article on the aerodynamic setup describes a 15 percentage-point range for varying front aerodynamic balance. It also says the usable setup range is narrower, making circuit-specific adjustment more consequential.

- Die-cast metal body with plastic parts
- Opening doors and engine compartment
- Adjustable seat back on some models
- Full function steering with Four wheel spring suspension
- Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system
Brakes and electronic controls
Ferrari described a new front-disc design and larger rear discs intended to reduce brake wear. The Evo also has four ABS modes—two for dry conditions and two for wet—and updated controls related to Ferrari’s Side Slip Control (SSC) system. These are manufacturer descriptions of the hardware and intended benefits, not independently measured wear or braking results.
Tires
Ferrari lists 275/675-19 tires at the front and 315/705-19 at the rear. Pirelli announced its P Zero DHA as the tire for the Evo beginning with the 2020 season, for the Ferrari Challenge championships named in its 2019 announcement. Those are historical specification and championship details, not confirmation of present-day supply or current series rules.

Steering wheel and rear visibility
Ferrari also included changes to steering-wheel ergonomics and rear visibility in its Evo update. These fit the car’s competition focus: drivers need controls they can operate readily and a useful view behind them during racing. Ferrari’s launch description does not provide quantified comparisons for either change.
How much more downforce does the Evo have?
Ferrari’s 2019 launch article claims 50% more overall downforce and 30% greater aerodynamic efficiency than the 488 Challenge. Its 2020 technical article also describes a 50% downforce improvement under design conditions. These are Ferrari’s manufacturer figures, not independent test results; the cited material does not provide a comparative lap-time test.

Can an existing 488 Challenge be upgraded to Evo specification?
Ferrari said the Evo components and improvements were also available as upgrade kits for existing 488 Challenge cars. The cited announcement does not establish current kit stock or pricing, which chassis are eligible, or installation requirements. Owners should check with Ferrari or an authorized Ferrari Challenge service channel for current availability and fitment.
