A 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype, chassis 0666 TR, sold for $16,390,000 at Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach auction in 2011. That is the sale rounded to the headline’s $16.4 million. Gooding called it a new worldwide auction record for a car sold at auction—but the record was historical, not a current claim.
Which Ferrari sold for $16.4 million?
The car was chassis 0666 TR, a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa Prototype. Gooding & Company’s 2011 lot record lists the result as $16,390,000. In its August 23, 2011 release, the auction house described the sale as a new worldwide record for a car sold at auction.
Gooding identified 0666 TR as the first 250 Testa Rossa built and a former Scuderia Ferrari team car. Its listing says it raced internationally for eight years at major venues and was driven by leading motor-sport figures. Gooding also noted a documented ownership history from new, restoration by Dennison International, a first-in-class award at the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and presentation in 1958 Le Mans NART livery. Those are details reported by the auction house, not an independent assessment here.
Specifications published for chassis 0666 TR
Gooding’s lot listing describes a 2,953 cc Tipo 128 LM single-overhead-cam V-12 with six Weber 38 DCN carburetors, rated at 300 bhp at 7,200 rpm. It lists a four-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, independent front suspension, and a De Dion tube rear axle with transverse leaf springs.

Was it really the most expensive car sold at auction?
It held the record when it sold in 2011, according to Gooding’s contemporaneous announcement. It did not keep it. RM Sotheby’s reported that a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 3413 GT, sold for $48,405,000 in 2018, exceeding the preceding auction record by more than $10 million. That later result establishes that the Testa Rossa’s record was surpassed; it does not by itself establish the complete world ranking as of 2026.
Was this the same Ferrari that sold in 2009?
No. The 2009 result concerned a different 1957 250 Testa Rossa: chassis 0714TR. RM Auctions sold it at Maranello for €9,020,000. It differs from the 2011 Gooding lot in chassis number, auction date, venue, and currency.
