Some automotive reports have called it a possible “296 Challenge Stradale” and speculated that it drops the hybrid system, but Ferrari has not confirmed the car, its name, or its powertrain. The officially announced Ferrari 296 Challenge is a separate, non-hybrid competition car—not proof that a road-going version is coming.
What is the Ferrari 296 Challenge Stradale?
“296 Challenge Stradale” is an unconfirmed name used in reporting about a camouflaged 296-based prototype. An August 25, 2026 Autoblog report republished by Yahoo described a road-going prototype with a large swan-neck wing, more aggressive side skirts, and a front spoiler. Motor1 also presented a road-focused special as a possibility. Neither report establishes Ferrari’s official name or confirms that the car will reach production.
The confirmed Ferrari 296 Challenge is different: it is a competition car for the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series. Ferrari announced it on October 19, 2023, as the series’ ninth model, scheduled to debut in Europe and North America in the 2024 season. Ferrari has not confirmed that the spotted prototype is a road version of that race car.
Is Ferrari making a non-hybrid 296?
Ferrari has confirmed a non-hybrid V6 for the 296 Challenge race car. Its October 2023 specifications describe a 120-degree, 2,992 cc twin-turbo V6 without the hybrid component. Ferrari’s later account of the race car’s development said: “At the very start of the development process, it was decided to remove the hybrid elements from the V6 powertrain as per the 296 GT3.”

That statement applies to the competition car, not the reported prototype. Reports have speculated that the prototype may also lose its hybrid system, but Ferrari has not confirmed its powertrain. Its final configuration remains unknown.
What is confirmed about the 296 Challenge’s power and performance?
Ferrari’s 2023 figures for the race car are 700 cv, 740 Nm of torque, and 234 cv/l of specific output. Those are the 296 Challenge’s specifications, not figures for the camouflaged prototype.

Ferrari also said in a 2024 feature that the 296 Challenge was two seconds faster around Mugello than the 488 Challenge Evo. That is Ferrari’s own comparison, not an independently measured test result. These figures should not be transferred to the prototype.
Why does the spotted car resemble a Challenge racer?
The race car and the reported prototype share an aggressive visual cue: a swan-neck rear wing. Ferrari’s published 296 Challenge aero package also includes an S-Duct, which routes air from the central radiator through a bonnet vent. Reports of the prototype describe a large wing, side skirts, and a front spoiler, but camouflage and spy photos do not establish the final design or whether it uses the race car’s aero hardware.

That has not been established. A reported sighting on a public road shows where a prototype was seen; it does not prove production intent, road legality, or the final specification. Ferrari had not announced the model in the cited August 2026 reporting, and no confirmed launch date or road-homologation details are available from these sources.
