The 296 GTB is the fixed-roof choice; the 296 GTS adds a retractable hardtop and open-air driving. Assetto Fiorano is a track-oriented package for a 296, not a separate body style, while the 296 Speciale is a distinct, higher-performance derivative. Choose by how you will drive the car, then verify the exact factory specification and condition of the individual example.
What separates the 296 GTB, GTS, Assetto Fiorano and Speciale?
These names describe different kinds of choices. GTB and GTS identify the car’s body style; Assetto Fiorano identifies a track-oriented configuration package; Speciale identifies a separate performance derivative. Keeping those distinctions straight makes adverts and specification sheets easier to assess.

| Choice | What it is | Best fit | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| 296 GTB | Fixed-roof berlinetta using the 296 plug-in hybrid V6 concept. | A buyer who wants the closed-roof body and does not need a retractable roof. | Whether the car has Assetto Fiorano or other options; verify from its VIN-specific factory specification. |
| 296 GTS | Retractable-hardtop spider sharing the core V6 plug-in hybrid concept with the GTB. | A buyer who values open-air driving and accepts the different roof configuration. | Roof operation and condition, as well as the exact options and package fitted. |
| Assetto Fiorano | A track-oriented package available as a configuration choice, with hardware, weight-saving measures and aerodynamic content. | A buyer specifically seeking the package’s track-derived specification. | The package’s presence and components on the actual car; do not infer it from appearance or an advert’s wording alone. |
| 296 Speciale | A distinct higher-performance derivative announced by Ferrari in 2025. | A buyer seeking the separate Speciale model rather than a package-equipped GTB or GTS. | That the car is actually a Speciale, not a GTB or GTS described as “Fiorano” or track-focused. |
Ferrari’s 2025 manufacturer material lists the GTB’s high-voltage battery capacity as 7.45 kWh and combined hybrid-system output as 610 kW (830 cv). Ferrari gives a 0–100 km/h time of 2.9 seconds and a top speed above 330 km/h. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results; they are not a substitute for assessing a particular car’s condition or specification.

For a buyer, the first useful comparison is not a contest between badges but a separation of decisions. Decide whether the roof matters to you, whether you want the specific track-oriented hardware described for Assetto Fiorano, and whether the distinct Speciale derivative is within your shortlist. Then compare actual VINs and records. An advert that uses “Fiorano,” “track pack” or “Speciale” loosely is not proof of factory identity or equipment.

Should you choose the GTB or GTS?
Choose the GTB for the fixed-roof body
The GTB is the straightforward choice if you want the 296’s fixed-roof berlinetta form and do not place a high value on opening the cabin to the air. The evidence here establishes the body-style distinction, but not a measured performance, comfort, or handling advantage over the GTS. Avoid assuming that one is categorically faster or better to drive based on body style alone.
Think about your own use rather than treating the roof as a proxy for performance. If you expect to drive with the roof closed and prefer the fixed-roof configuration, the GTB aligns with that preference. If you frequently want open-air motoring, the GTS’s retractable roof is a direct functional distinction. Neither choice removes the need to check the exact specification, service history and condition of the car you are considering.
Choose the GTS for a retractable hardtop
Ferrari describes the GTS roof as a retractable hardtop that folds in two sections. Ferrari says it can be deployed in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent timing test. If roof operation is central to your decision, operate it on the specific car and have its condition checked rather than relying on the specification alone.

The available evidence does not establish a current price premium, depreciation difference, or resale advantage for either body style. Those questions require comparisons for the buyer’s market, model year, mileage, condition and exact specification.
On an in-person viewing, make the roof more than a line on the equipment list: ask the seller to demonstrate its operation, and have a specialist inspect its condition. This is a sensible car-specific check, not a claim that the GTS has a model-wide roof problem. Confirm that the car being demonstrated is the same VIN and specification represented in the records and advert.
What does Assetto Fiorano add?
Assetto Fiorano is a configuration package for a 296, not a third body style and not another name for the Speciale. Ferrari’s GTS technical press material describes “special GT racing-derived adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers optimised for track use.” Ferrari also lists carbon-fibre aerodynamic components. The package is aimed at a track-oriented specification; whether those changes suit your use depends on whether you value that focus for the driving you actually do.
Ferrari’s GTS material says its Assetto Fiorano front appendages can add up to 10 kg of downforce. This is Ferrari’s stated figure for that GTS aerodynamic content, not an independent measurement or a number to apply to every 296. Ferrari’s cited GTB press material describes a package weight reduction of more than 12 kg, while the GTS release describes an 8 kg saving from its redesigned door panels. Those are different, package-specific statements: do not combine them into one universal weight-saving figure for all GTB and GTS cars.

A UK-focused independent buying guide notes that Assetto Fiorano and Fiorano Performance naming can differ in UK listings. It also says the package’s passive Multimatic dampers replace the standard adaptive magnetorheological system. Treat that naming note as UK-specific guidance, not a rule for every country: ask a Ferrari dealer or recognised specialist to verify the local-market terminology and the exact equipment shown on the car’s factory specification.
When the package makes sense
- You want the specified track-derived damper and aerodynamic hardware, not just a car that looks more purposeful.
- You are prepared to verify the package and inspect its components individually.
- You understand that package-specific hardware may differ from the standard car’s equipment, including the damper system described for the UK market.
When to look beyond the package name
If your aim is simply to buy a faster-sounding or rarer 296, the package label does not establish what an individual car is worth or how it will perform in your hands. No market prices, resale comparisons or independent test results are established here. Confirm what is fitted and compare actual cars in the relevant region rather than paying for a description that the build record does not support.
Package verification matters for two reasons. First, equipment is the point of the choice: Ferrari describes specific dampers and aerodynamic content, so a buyer seeking those features should establish that they are on the car. Second, the package name is not interchangeable with the Speciale model name. Ask for the factory build specification and match it against the car rather than relying on badges, photographs, seller terminology or a broad description in a listing.
Is the 296 Speciale the same as an Assetto Fiorano car?
No. The Speciale is a distinct derivative announced by Ferrari in 2025, not a package name for a GTB or GTS. Ferrari stated that the Speciale has 880 hp combined output and described it as “50 more than the 296 GTB.” Both figures and the comparison are Ferrari’s wording from its 29 April 2025 announcement; they are manufacturer claims, not independent test results.

Ferrari’s materials give the values in different units and describe different model references. If you are comparing a Speciale with a GTB or GTS, confirm the model identity and its specification from its VIN-specific records, and use Ferrari’s market-specific documentation for any further technical comparison.
In practical shopping terms, treat a Speciale listing as a separate model comparison, not as a GTB or GTS with a package. A package-equipped car and a Speciale may both be presented as track-focused, but that shared shorthand does not make their identities or specifications equivalent. Verify the model in the VIN-specific factory information before comparing claims, asking prices or options.
How to check a used 296 before you buy
A current independent buying guide, updated 29 September 2026, recommends checking hybrid diagnostics, charging and storage history, VIN-specific warranty and maintenance status, track use, recalls, original specification, service records, mileage consistency, finance and accident or write-off history. It cautions that hybrid assessment needs specialist equipment and that database or history checks do not replace a physical inspection or battery-health assessment. This is a practical framework, not evidence that every 296 has a particular fault.

Start the process before travelling to inspect the car. Request the VIN, factory build specification and service documentation, then compare them with the advert. Ask for the seller’s account of how the car has been stored and charged, whether it has been used on track, and what maintenance has been completed. These questions create a record to discuss with a Ferrari dealer or recognised specialist; they do not by themselves certify condition.
- Get the VIN and build specification. Ask for the VIN and factory specification, then establish whether the car is a GTB, GTS or Speciale and whether Assetto Fiorano is actually recorded. Reconcile the advert’s description and options with those records.
- Check service, mileage and ownership records. Review service history and mileage consistency. Run appropriate finance and accident/write-off history checks, and ask about track use rather than treating it as an automatic defect.
- Check warranty, maintenance and recalls with Ferrari. Ask a Ferrari dealer to confirm the VIN-specific status. Do not infer remaining coverage or completed recall work from a general model description.
- Arrange a specialist hybrid assessment. Have a Ferrari dealer or recognised specialist use equipment appropriate to the high-voltage system. A generic diagnostic tool or an advert’s assurance is not a substitute for specialist assessment or battery-health evaluation.
- Inspect the actual car in person. Commission a physical inspection by a suitably qualified specialist. On a package car, inspect carbon-fibre aerodynamic components closely; on a GTS, check the roof and its operation. Use the inspection to assess the specific car, not to assume a model-wide fault.
- Make the decision against the verified car, not the listing. Resolve discrepancies between the advert, VIN-specific build information, records and inspection before agreeing to buy.
For a hybrid inspection, be specific about what you are asking the specialist to assess. The buying guide warns that specialist equipment is needed and that a general history check does not establish battery health. Do not treat a generic scan tool, charging anecdote or dashboard impression as a substitute for the appropriate system assessment. Ask the specialist to explain the findings for the particular car and what, if anything, needs further attention.
For the records review, compare the mileage shown across available service and ownership documentation rather than relying on a single figure in the advert. Check finance and accident or write-off history through appropriate channels, and ask about track use in a neutral way. Track use is one history factor to understand and assess, not an automatic verdict on a car. Likewise, a clean-looking listing does not replace a physical inspection.
These checks help establish identity, history and condition; they do not establish a fair asking price. Current market prices, depreciation, regional taxes and registration rules, available stock, and any individual car’s warranty or recall status all require market- and VIN-specific verification.
How should track-oriented specification affect your choice?
Start with the use case, not the badge. A GTB or GTS with Assetto Fiorano remains that body-style model with a package; the Speciale is the separate derivative. For regular track use, the Assetto Fiorano hardware may be relevant because Ferrari describes track-derived dampers and aerodynamic components. For predominantly road use, weigh the value of that configuration against the equipment it replaces or adds and how you intend to drive. The available evidence does not quantify road comfort, lap-time gains, running costs or long-term resale effects, so those should not be presented as established advantages.

Ferrari’s GTS feature material names optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres for track performance. Treat the tyre as a specific option to verify, not a blanket recommendation for every buyer or road condition. Confirm the exact wheel and tyre fitment and whether it suits your intended road use with a Ferrari specialist.
This is a narrow but relevant configuration question for a buyer comparing track-oriented cars. Ask whether the car actually has the named tyre option and confirm its wheel and tyre fitment rather than assuming all Assetto Fiorano cars, GTS models or track-focused listings have the same setup. A specialist can also advise whether that particular fitment is appropriate for your planned use. The feature material identifies the option for track performance; it does not establish a universal tyre recommendation.

Before choosing the package, be clear about what you value: the factory-described hardware and track focus, the open roof of a GTS, or the separate performance identity of the Speciale. The available figures do not supply a lap-time comparison, a road-comfort ranking or an ownership-cost calculation between these choices. If those are decisive for you, seek model- and car-specific advice rather than inferring an answer from the package name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available figures do—and do not—tell you
The technical figures are useful for understanding the manufacturer’s stated performance and the package’s intended emphasis. They cannot tell you whether a particular used car’s high-voltage system is healthy, whether its build matches an advert, or what it should cost in your region. The 296 choice is therefore two decisions: first select the body style or derivative that fits your use; then verify the specification, history and condition of the exact VIN you are considering.

Similarly, the manufacturer’s quoted output, acceleration and top-speed figures are model-level specifications, not a report on the example being sold. A car’s documentation and specialist assessment answer different questions from headline figures: identity, equipment, maintenance, warranty, recalls and hybrid-system condition. Keep those lines of evidence separate when weighing a listing.
Questions buyers often ask
Is the Ferrari 296 GTS just a GTB with the roof removed? The GTS is the retractable-hardtop spider, while the GTB is the fixed-roof berlinetta. Ferrari describes the GTS roof as folding in two sections and deploying in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h. The models share the core V6 plug-in hybrid concept, but the body-style choice should be made on the value you place on open-air driving.
What does Assetto Fiorano add to a 296? Ferrari describes a track-oriented package with track-derived adjustable Multimatic dampers and carbon-fibre aerodynamic components. The exact package content and local naming should be checked against the car’s factory specification, particularly where listing terminology varies by market.
Is Assetto Fiorano the same as the 296 Speciale? No. Assetto Fiorano is a configuration package; Speciale is a distinct derivative announced in 2025. Ferrari stated 880 hp combined output for the Speciale. Verify that any car advertised as a Speciale is identified that way in its VIN-specific records.

Compare real cars in your market and verify equipment rather than treating the package label as a value guarantee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I buy a Ferrari 296 GTB or GTS?
Choose the GTB if you want the fixed-roof berlinetta; choose the GTS if open-air driving and its retractable hardtop are important. The cited material does not establish a categorical performance, price or resale advantage for either body style.
What does Assetto Fiorano add to the Ferrari 296?
Ferrari describes a track-oriented package with track-derived Multimatic dampers and carbon-fibre aerodynamic components. Confirm the exact equipment and package identity from the car’s VIN-specific factory specification.
Is the 296 Speciale the same as an Assetto Fiorano-equipped GTB or GTS?
No. Assetto Fiorano is a package, while the Speciale is a distinct derivative announced in 2025. Ferrari stated 880 hp combined output for the Speciale; verify the model identity from factory records.
How should I assess a used 296’s hybrid system?
Have a Ferrari dealer or recognised specialist assess the high-voltage system using suitable specialist equipment. A generic diagnostic tool or history check does not replace battery-health assessment and an in-person inspection.
Does Assetto Fiorano guarantee a resale premium or faster lap times?
No such guarantee is established here. The manufacturer material describes package content, but does not provide an independent lap-time comparison or resale analysis. Compare cars and prices in your market and verify the exact specification.
The Bottom Line
Choose the GTB for its fixed roof, the GTS for its retractable hardtop, Assetto Fiorano for its verified track-oriented hardware, or the distinct Speciale if that separate derivative is what you want. For any used example, check the VIN and factory specification, records, warranty and recalls, hybrid-system health and physical condition with appropriate Ferrari expertise. Do not treat a listing label, manufacturer figure or package name as a substitute for inspecting the actual car.
