Fastest New Cars Under $40,000 in 2025: Quickest 0–60 Picks

If “fastest” means quickest from 0 to 60 mph, the 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost and Hyundai Elantra N lead the sourced tests for new cars with starting prices below $40,000. They are close enough—and the Mustang results differ enough by publication and tested configuration—that there is no defensible single winner across all trims. The Golf GTI, Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86, and Mazda MX-5 Miata offer different kinds of performance and practicality at lower starting prices.

This is a comparison of reported 0–60 mph acceleration, not top speed or lap times. Prices below are U.S. starting figures reported for 2025; taxes, title, license, options, dealer adjustments, and local inventory can change what a buyer actually pays.

Fastest new cars under $40,000: the comparison

Acceleration figures below come from specific publications and tests, not a standardized head-to-head session. Treat them as useful reference points rather than promises for every car of the same name.

Hyundai Elantra N 4.8 seconds in Car and Driver’s instrumented automatic test Hyundai states MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, and license; check the current price displayed for the exact trim Four-door performance sedan
Volkswagen Golf GTI 5.9 seconds in Edmunds’ report carried by AP $33,640, destination included, in the AP/Edmunds roundup Front-wheel-drive hatchback with a spacious cabin and cargo area for its size
Subaru BRZ About 6 seconds with a manual transmission, per Edmunds’ report carried by AP $32,380, destination included, in the AP/Edmunds roundup Rear-wheel-drive coupe focused on balanced handling
Toyota GR86 About 6 seconds with a manual transmission, per Edmunds’ report carried by AP $31,135, destination included, in the AP/Edmunds roundup Rear-wheel-drive coupe related to the BRZ
Mazda MX-5 Miata 6.4 seconds for a manual car, per Edmunds’ report carried by AP $30,715, destination included, in the AP/Edmunds roundup Light, nimble two-seat roadster with an easy-to-lower roof
Subaru WRX Car and Driver lists 5.6 seconds for a 2025 manual TS and 5.4 seconds for a 2022 CVT GT; these are not comparable 2025 trim results The cited source does not establish that every 2025 trim fits below $40,000; verify the exact trim’s complete price Potential all-wheel-drive alternative if the selected trim meets the budget

Which cars are quickest from 0 to 60?

Ford Mustang EcoBoost: the quickest reported result, with a large test spread

Car and Driver reports a 4.5-second 0–60 mph run for the 2025 Mustang EcoBoost. Edmunds, in the roundup carried by AP, reports 5.6 seconds for its tested 10-speed automatic configuration and lists 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque. Those results should remain attached to their respective sources and configurations; they should not be averaged or treated as a guaranteed time for every EcoBoost.

The Mustang’s $33,515 starting price in the AP/Edmunds roundup includes destination, leaving room below the $40,000 ceiling on that price basis. A specific car’s options and dealer pricing can narrow or erase that margin.

Hyundai Elantra N: a quick four-door alternative

Car and Driver recorded 4.8 seconds to 60 mph in an instrumented test of the automatic Elantra N. Hyundai describes the car as a performance sedan and lists performance equipment on its product page. Its MSRP presentation excludes freight, tax, title, and license, so compare the exact trim’s current displayed price with the full cost of a Mustang listing rather than assuming the headline MSRP is an out-the-door figure.

Hyundai also cautions that the Elantra N’s summer tires may be noisier when ambient temperatures are below 7°C. That is a practical consideration for buyers who will drive in colder weather, separate from its acceleration result.

Other fast cars under the budget offer different strengths

Volkswagen Golf GTI: useful hatchback space

Edmunds reports 241 horsepower and a 5.9-second 0–60 time for the 2025 Golf GTI. The AP-carried roundup says 2025 versions use a seven-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Its hatchback layout, spacious cabin, and generous cargo area for its size make it the most utility-oriented choice among the listed rear-drive coupes and roadsters.

Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86: rear-drive coupes

The related BRZ and GR86 are each rated at 228 horsepower. Edmunds reports about 6 seconds to 60 mph for manual-transmission versions. Both are rear-wheel drive and offer manual and automatic choices; the roundup highlights their low center of gravity and balanced handling. Their appeal is a coupe-focused driving experience, not matching the Mustang’s or Elantra N’s quickest cited straight-line runs.

Mazda MX-5 Miata: open-air handling over straight-line speed

Edmunds measured a manual Miata at 6.4 seconds to 60 mph. It is slower in the cited acceleration comparison, but its light weight, nimble handling, and easy-to-lower roof make it a distinct choice for someone who values a small roadster rather than maximum launch speed.

Subaru WRX: include only after checking the exact trim

Car and Driver’s 2025 WRX page lists a 5.6-second result for a 2025 manual TS, alongside a 5.4-second result for a 2022 CVT GT. The second figure is from an earlier model year, so it is not an apples-to-apples comparison of 2025 trims. The cited information also does not establish that every 2025 WRX trim stays below $40,000. Consider it an AWD possibility only after confirming the selected trim’s complete price.

How to read the acceleration and price figures

0–60 times are test results, not guarantees

The Mustang’s 4.5-second Car and Driver result and 5.6-second Edmunds/AP result show why test context matters. Transmission and trim, tires, weather, surface, and testing procedure can affect a run. The cited material does not provide a standardized cross-publication retest, so the numbers support a shortlist, not a precise universal ranking.

Starting price is not the same as the full purchase price

The AP/Edmunds roundup explicitly includes destination in its listed prices. Hyundai’s page says freight and tax, title, and license are excluded from MSRP. For any candidate, check the exact trim and local dealer listing, then account for destination where applicable, options, taxes, title, license, and any dealer adjustment before deciding it qualifies under $40,000.

How to choose among the quickest options

  • Choose the Mustang EcoBoost if a rear-drive coupe and the quickest reported test result are the priorities, while recognizing that published Mustang times vary substantially.
  • Choose the Elantra N if you want a four-door performance sedan with a quick instrumented automatic test result; verify the current trim price and consider the manufacturer’s summer-tire temperature warning.
  • Choose the Golf GTI if hatchback cargo and cabin utility matter more than beating the leading cited 0–60 times.
  • Choose the BRZ or GR86 if a rear-drive coupe and manual-transmission option are more appealing than straight-line pace.
  • Choose the Miata if an open-top, lightweight roadster is the goal and a slower 0–60 time is acceptable.
  • Consider the WRX only after checking the precise 2025 trim and its full price against the cap.
