Among the GM cars listed in a compilation of period magazine tests, the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS with the LS6 454 ranks first at 13.12 seconds, followed by the 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 at 13.38 seconds. A separate GM Heritage claim says a 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air 409 was capable of a 12.2-second quarter mile, but that manufacturer statement is a different kind of evidence—not a directly comparable magazine test.
How this ranking works
Quarter-mile elapsed time (ET) is the ranking measure: lower is quicker. Trap speed is included as a secondary figure, not a substitute for ET. The period-test figures below come from a 2018 Muscle Cars Illustrated compilation that credits its underlying “Top 50 Fastest Muscle Cars” list to the November 1991 issue of Muscle Car Review and reproduces publication abbreviations for individual results. These are reported figures from that compilation and its cited period tests, not independently verified original test data. The available evidence does not establish that the cars were tested with identical tires, weather, track preparation, transmissions, or driver procedures, so this is not a controlled head-to-head comparison. All ETs and trap speeds in this table are as reproduced by the 2018 compilation; the publication shorthand is shown as printed there, and the page does not expand every abbreviation. Its credited source list was published in 1991, while the individual row attributions point to period issues. Source and attribution notes
The 1962 Bel Air 409: a quicker figure, but a different claim
GM Heritage says its 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air equipped with a 409-cubic-inch V8, solid valve lifters, and manual transmission was capable of a 12.2-second quarter mile. The page also gives that car a 409-hp rating and describes the Bel Air as Chevrolet’s mid-priced line. Because this is a manufacturer heritage-page capability statement rather than a result in the compilation’s period-test table, it should be kept separate from the ranked magazine figures; the available information does not show that the Bel Air claim and those test results share conditions. What horsepower and trim details do—and don’t—tell you
Horsepower ratings help identify the cars, but they do not by themselves determine a quarter-mile ranking. GM Heritage lists the 1970 Buick GSX’s 455-cubic-inch V8 at 350 hp and 510 lb-ft, with a 3.64 rear end and listed weight of 3,562 pounds. It records 678 GSX models built in 1970, including 178 in Apollo White. Those are specifications and production details, not a GSX road-test time; the 13.38-second table entry is specifically a Buick GS Stage 1, so the names should not be treated as interchangeable. GM Heritage: 1970 Buick GSX
For the 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30, GM Heritage lists a 455-cubic-inch V8 rated at 370 hp, along with forced-air induction, a special air cleaner, an aluminum intake manifold, a fiberglass hood, lightweight insulation, and manual front disc brakes. It reports 1,542 W-30 automatic cars built. These model details describe the factory configuration; the 13.88-second ET and 95.84-mph trap speed are separately reported in the compilation.
