Using roughly 2.0–3.0 liters as “small” in a performance-car context, manufacturer figures show a wide spread: the 2.0-liter Lotus Emira Turbo SE is rated at 400 bhp and 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds, while the 2.0-liter Toyota GR Supra is estimated at 255 hp and 0–60 mph in 5.0 seconds. Those claims are not results from a common independent test.
What counts as a small engine in a fast sports car?
There is no universal displacement cutoff for “small.” For this comparison, roughly 2.0–3.0 liters is a practical range: compact beside larger sports-car engines, but not small in every automotive context. A 3.0-liter engine is larger than a 2.0-liter one; both can still be relatively compact compared with a 4.0-liter sports-car engine.
Displacement alone does not determine acceleration. Engine output, vehicle configuration and transmission all matter. Also check what each performance figure measures: 0–60 mph is not the same as 0–62 mph, and manufacturer estimates or specifications should not be treated as results from identical instrumented tests.
Which fast sports cars fit the roughly 2.0–3.0-liter range?
The available manufacturer specifications establish five relevant model or variant examples, not ten distinct current or recent cars with comparable data. These examples illustrate the range without padding the list with trim variants presented as separate models.

| Model and market/year | Engine and output | Manufacturer-stated performance |
|---|---|---|
| Lotus Emira Turbo SE; Lotus specification page accessed 2026 | 1,991cc turbocharged four-cylinder; 400 bhp | 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Lotus also publishes a 0–62 mph figure; see its specification page for the stated value and variant details. |
| Porsche 718 Cayman or Boxster base; US technical data | 2.0-liter; 300 hp | 0–60 mph in 4.9 seconds with manual or 4.7 seconds with PDK; top track speed 170 mph. |
| Porsche 718 Cayman or Boxster S; US technical data | 2.5-liter; 350 hp | 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds with manual or 4.2 seconds with PDK; top track speed 177 mph. |
| Toyota GR Supra 2.0; 2024 US | 2.0-liter turbo inline-four; 255 hp and 295 lb-ft | Manufacturer-estimated 0–60 mph in 5.0 seconds. |
| Toyota GR Supra 3.0; 2025 US | 3.0-liter turbo inline-six; up to 382 hp | 0–60 mph in 3.9 seconds with automatic or 4.2 seconds with manual. |
The Emira’s 1,991cc engine is just under 2.0 liters, so it falls at the lower edge of the comparison’s intended range. Its 400 bhp and 4.3-second 0–60 mph claim make it a particularly clear example of how much output a modern turbocharged 2.0-liter sports car can deliver. Lotus notes that specifications may change, so check the current market-specific listing.
The Porsche figures show why the exact version and transmission matter: the 2.5-liter S is quicker than the 2.0-liter base in the published figures, and PDK versions have shorter stated 0–60 times than their manual counterparts. The 2025 US GR Supra 3.0 is substantially more powerful and quicker in the manufacturer’s figures than the 2024 US 2.0; those are different engines and model years, not interchangeable Supra specifications.

How does a 2.4-liter sports coupe compare?
Toyota GR86: a lighter-performance alternative, not a sprint leader
Toyota’s 2027 US GR86 uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer-four rated at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. Toyota states 0–60 mph in 6.1 seconds with the manual and 6.6 seconds with the automatic. It belongs in a discussion of relatively small-engine sports cars, but its published acceleration figure is slower than the high-output examples above; “fast” depends on whether the reader means outright acceleration or a sports-car character more broadly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a ten-car ranking
The manufacturer sources used for this comparison do not establish ten distinct current or recent sports cars with comparable official performance data. Counting the Cayman and Boxster separately, or treating several trims as separate cars, would inflate the number without creating a fairer comparison. A complete ten-car ranking would also require consistent evidence about model year, market, configuration and performance measurement.

Nor do these figures establish a single fastest-car order. They mix manufacturer specifications and estimates from different makers, and they do not all identify performance under a shared testing method. The published numbers are useful for understanding each maker’s claim for a particular version, not for declaring a controlled winner.

How to compare small-engine sports cars fairly
- Identify the exact model year and market. Outputs and available configurations can differ by region and change over time.
- Match the engine and trim. The GR Supra 2.0 and 3.0, for example, have different engines and published performance.
- Include transmission and options. Porsche’s stated 0–60 times differ between manual and PDK versions; option packages can also affect a specification.
- Keep units and test claims distinct. Do not silently treat 0–62 mph as 0–60 mph, or an estimated manufacturer figure as an independent test.
- Look beyond displacement. Power, torque, engine design and the car’s configuration help explain why two engines of similar size can produce different results.
