Here are ten details that explain what made it distinctive, and why its story continued after road-car production ended.
1. Toyota launched the A80 on May 24, 1993
Toyota’s Japanese launch announcement dates the new Supra to May 24, 1993. The generation labels depend on the market: Toyota calls it the second-generation Supra in Japan and the fourth generation overseas. Both refer to the same A80 model, not different cars. Toyota’s 1993 launch announcement gives the date and Japanese naming; Toyota’s Supra history explains the overseas designation.
2. Buyers could choose naturally aspirated or twin-turbo power
The Japanese range included the SZ with a naturally aspirated 3,000 cc 2JZ-GE inline-six, alongside the RZ and GZ grades with the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE. Both engines had six cylinders and the same listed displacement, but the turbocharged engine was the higher-output choice. Toyota’s historical specifications describe representative Japanese grades; configurations varied by market.
3. Toyota’s Japanese power ratings were 225 PS or 280 PS
For the representative Japanese grades in Toyota’s historical specification table, the 2JZ-GE SZ is rated at 225 PS at 6,000 rpm, while the 2JZ-GTE grades are rated at 280 PS at 5,600 rpm. Toyota identifies these as net ratings. PS is a metric horsepower unit, and these Japanese figures should not be treated as universal North American horsepower ratings: output ratings and specifications depend on market, grade and model year. Toyota’s specification table lists the figures.

4. Toyota claimed it cut more than 100 kg from the predecessor
In its 1993 announcement, Toyota said the new Supra was more than 100 kg lighter than its predecessor. The company cited choices such as an aluminum hood, a plastic fuel tank and hollow-fiber carpet as part of the weight-saving effort. This is Toyota’s launch-era comparison, not a claim that every A80 specification weighed the same. Toyota’s announcement describes the reduction and materials.
5. The turbo model offered Toyota’s first six-speed manual
Toyota said the turbo models could be equipped with its first six-speed manual transmission, jointly developed with Getrag. The launch announcement identifies the RZ as adopting the six-speed; turbo models also offered an ECT-iS automatic with a manual-shift mode. Transmission availability was grade- and market-dependent, so this does not mean every Mk4 had a six-speed. Toyota’s launch specification describes the transmission choices.

6. Safety was part of the performance brief
Chief designer Isao Tsuzuki described the development priority this way: “In developing the new Supra, our top priority was to ensure that each element of the car’s performance was combined with a component of safety.” Toyota’s launch specification included optional driver and passenger airbags and lateral G-sensing four-channel ABS, which it listed as standard on turbo models. The distinction matters: airbags were optional in the described launch specification, while the ABS was standard on turbo grades. Toyota’s announcement attributes the quote and details the equipment.
7. “Less is more” guided the design development
Tsuzuki also said, “We focused our thoughts on the one key concept ‘Less is more,’” linking that idea to the car’s weight reduction and specific material and exhaust choices. It was Toyota’s stated development concept, not a description of a single styling feature. The 1993 announcement records the phrase and Toyota’s explanation.

8. The launch lineup included SZ, RZ and GZ grades
Toyota’s Japanese launch lineup named three grades: SZ, RZ and GZ. They were not simply cosmetic labels for identical equipment: the SZ represented the naturally aspirated engine, while the representative RZ and GZ used the twin-turbo engine. Toyota also listed a removable aluminum sport roof as an option; its availability should not be assumed for every grade or market. Toyota’s launch announcement gives the grades and option.
9. “Supra” comes from a Latin word meaning “above”
Toyota says the name “Supra” comes from Latin and means “transcending” or “above.” It is a fittingly ambitious name for a car positioned as Toyota’s performance flagship. Toyota’s Supra history page provides the name’s meaning.

10. The Supra’s competition career continued after production
Toyota says Japanese production of the A80 ended in August 2002, while its historical page describes the Supra as remaining active in motorsport until 2005. Toyota UK reports A80 participation in the Japanese GT Championship (JGTC) from 1995 to 2003, as well as Le Mans appearances. These are different measures of the car’s competition history; they do not establish a total number of wins. Toyota’s history page gives the production and motorsport dates, and Toyota UK’s Supra history covers JGTC and Le Mans.

There is no single end date for every market. Toyota’s August 2002 date is the end of Japanese production. Toyota UK says sales ended earlier in the UK, in late 1996, and North American sales ended by the close of 1998. Those regional sales cutoffs do not contradict the later Japanese production end. Toyota UK’s history reports the market-specific dates; Toyota’s A80 history records the Japanese production end.
