The real debate is how the FIA and Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) pursue parity, what they reveal about the process, and how much race results can actually tell us.
What Balance of Performance is supposed to do
Le Mans Hypercar brings together cars built to different engineering designs. The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) describes BoP as an equivalence mechanism intended to let those cars compete in one category. That is the governing bodies’ stated objective, not independent evidence that equal opportunity is achieved. FIA WEC’s Hypercar explainer sets out the category’s rationale.
Under the 2025 WEC regulations, the Endurance Committee can make adjustments as provided for in the technical regulations or through dedicated committee decisions. BoP is therefore a regulatory tool applied to the class, not a single permanent specification for every car or every event. The 2025 WEC Sporting Regulations describe the committee’s authority.
What is known about how the system works
Data and technical analysis
The public description is of a data-led process. The FIA’s 2023 explanation says simulation and telemetry correlation were central to its method, with lap times not the leading basis for the computation. The 2026 Le Mans supplementary regulations say BoP is established and adjusted using data and information supplied by competitors and manufacturers to the ACO/FIA and WEC Committee; those declarations are binding. The FIA’s 2023 technical explanation and the 2026 Le Mans supplementary regulations describe these parts of the process.

Those public accounts do not disclose every input, model weighting, or decision detail. Readers can see the broad kinds of information involved, but cannot reconstruct the complete calculation from the published descriptions alone.
Le Mans uses a distinct data context
The FIA says the Le Mans Hypercar analysis includes data from the previous year’s race. As a result, the Le Mans BoP need not correspond directly to the table used at an earlier WEC round. Comparing events or seasons without accounting for that data window can make unlike decisions appear directly comparable. The FIA’s explanation of Le Mans Hypercar BoP sets out this distinction.

Historical figures are not the current event table
In its 2021 Hypercar explainer, the FIA described a 500 kW power target and a 1,030 kg minimum weight as part of the category’s initial technical framework. Those are historical category figures—not the 2026 Le Mans car-by-car allocations or a current event’s BoP settings. The same explainer describes torque meters as a way to measure and limit allocated power, noting: “One of the most innovative solutions is the use of torque meters, allowing for better control of the powertrain parameters on track.” The FIA WEC explainer provides that dated context.
Why the transparency question has grown
The 2026 regulations describe the information basis for BoP, while Motorsport.com reported that figures would no longer be published before events and covered the ensuing controversy. Together, those facts establish a transparency debate: when figures and decision details are less visible, fans and journalists have less material with which to examine the reasoning. They do not establish that a result was manipulated. Motorsport.com’s report on the publication change describes the debate.

A historical FIA/ACO statement also shows the committee saying it adjusted the balance after judging that differences between LMH cars were greater than anticipated, following analysis of available data. That documents the bodies’ stated rationale for a past decision; it does not independently verify the analysis or its intent. The FIA/ACO statement records that explanation.
What race results can—and cannot—prove
Close finishes and cars on the lead lap can be consistent with competitive racing, but they cannot isolate BoP’s contribution from car design, reliability, execution, strategy, driver performance, weather, or incidents. Nor does one manufacturer’s win or apparent pace, by itself, establish either fairness or a fix.

The FIA WEC’s 2025 event guide describes the 2024 Le Mans finish as a 14-second margin and reports nine cars on the lead lap. The official 2025 results record the winning #83 Ferrari ahead of the #6 Porsche by 14.084 seconds. These are outcome figures, not measurements of BoP’s causal effect. The 2025 FIA WEC event guide and the official 2025 results provide the figures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse Hypercar BoP with LMGT3 success ballast
Hypercar BoP and LMGT3 success ballast are different mechanisms. The WEC regulations exclude Le Mans from the LMGT3 success-ballast system, so that system should not be used as a shorthand explanation for Hypercar settings at the 24 Hours. The 2025 WEC Sporting Regulations specify the LMGT3 rule.

So, fair or fixed?
The available evidence supports a careful answer, not a verdict that the system is either perfectly fair or fixed. The FIA and ACO state that BoP is intended to create equivalence, describe a process involving competitor and manufacturer information, simulation, and telemetry, and make event-specific decisions. The public material does not let an outside reader independently assess every calculation or prove that parity has been achieved. Less disclosure makes scrutiny harder; it is not evidence of manipulation.
That leaves a useful distinction: the stated goal and broad process are documented, but the quality of each decision is not independently settled by the sources cited here. A winner, a close gap, or a repeat result cannot settle that question on its own.
