Suzuka can be a thrilling circuit to drive and watch through its fastest corners while still making overtaking difficult. The 2025 Japanese Grand Prix showed both sides: Max Verstappen won from pole, the top six finished in their starting positions, and the top three were separated by just 2.129 seconds. Whether that makes it a “great race” is a judgment, not a statistic.
Why is Suzuka so hard to overtake at?
Suzuka’s appeal is built into its shape. The 5.807-kilometre circuit was designed by Dutchman John Hugenholtz as a Honda test track in 1962, and it first hosted the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix in 1987. Its unusual crossover layout runs through demanding sequences including the S Curves and Degners, with the fast 130R among its signature corners. Formula 1’s Suzuka circuit profile describes the layout and its defining challenges.
Those same characteristics that make the circuit a test of precision and commitment can make it hard for one car to stay close enough to another to attack. After the 2025 race, Verstappen said following was “just very hard,” citing the cars’ increasing downforce and Suzuka’s single DRS zone. Hülkenberg, speaking after finishing outside the points, put it plainly: “Suzuka is a great circuit, and I really enjoy racing here, but it’s very hard to overtake on this track.”
That is a useful distinction: a track can reward the driver’s skill without naturally producing frequent passing. DRS can help, but one zone does not guarantee an easy route past a rival.

Why was the 2025 Japanese Grand Prix so processional?
Verstappen started from pole and won the 53-lap race in 1:22:06.983. Lando Norris finished second, 1.423 seconds behind, and Oscar Piastri was third, 2.129 seconds behind. The top six finishers crossed the line in the same order in which they had started. The official race result records the finishing order and gaps.
Tyre behavior offered little incentive for a major strategic reshuffle. Pirelli Motorsport Director Mario Isola said the Hard and Medium tyres showed “virtually no drop in lap time performance” over long stints. He attributed the low degradation partly to ambient and track temperatures that were the lowest recorded at Suzuka since 2011, and partly to changes to the 2025 tyre range intended to reduce wear. That combination helped make a one-stop strategy viable.

During the pit-stop phase, Norris tried to go side-by-side with Verstappen at the pit exit and ran onto the grass; stewards took no further action. Later, Piastri closed on Norris in the final ten laps, while Norris also reduced Verstappen’s lead. The podium order did not change, but the closing stages were not devoid of pressure. Isola also noted that 14 of the 20 drivers set their fastest lap in the final five laps, consistent with tyres that retained performance late in the race. Formula 1’s race report describes the contest and pit-stop incident; Pirelli’s post-race account gives Isola’s tyre analysis.
Can a great F1 track produce a boring race?
It can produce a race with few position changes, but “boring” depends on what a viewer values. The 2025 Japanese Grand Prix had a stable finishing order, yet the leading group remained close: Isola said the top three were separated by 44 thousandths of a second in qualifying, and they finished within 2.129 seconds of one another. Norris chased Verstappen, and Piastri pressured Norris late on.

Those details support two conclusions at once. The race offered close competition at the front, while the circuit, single DRS zone and low tyre degradation limited opportunities to turn that closeness into overtakes or a different order. There is no objective “great race” measure in the cited event sources; the verdict rests on whether a spectator prizes close gaps and driver challenge, frequent passing, or both.
