F1 The Movie earns the “electric” reaction through its central pairing: Brad Pitt brings veteran cool as Sonny Hayes, while Damson Idris supplies rookie urgency as Joshua Pearce. Early reviews praise the real-Grand-Prix racing spectacle and Joseph Kosinski’s direction, though they generally describe the comeback story as familiar.
The early verdict on F1 The Movie is enthusiastic where it matters most: the racing has genuine theatrical force, and Brad Pitt and Damson Idris create the film’s strongest source of momentum. Pitt plays veteran driver Sonny Hayes with relaxed, bruised confidence; Idris gives rookie Joshua Pearce impatience, ambition, and enough volatility to push back. Their contrast is why the film’s familiar comeback story feels more charged than its premise might suggest.
The caveat is equally clear. Early reviews generally praise the spectacle, performances, and direction more consistently than the screenplay. F1 The Movie does not reinvent the underdog sports drama. Instead, it uses a recognizable structure as the framework for a large-scale racing movie built around real Grand Prix environments, high-speed imagery, and two leads who are unusually well matched.
Why Brad Pitt and Damson Idris work so well together
The “electric” description is not primarily about romance. It refers to the dramatic friction between two drivers at opposite points in their careers.

Sonny Hayes was once a Formula 1 driver, but an accident derailed his career. Years later, he is asked by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, to return and help save Ruben’s struggling fictional APXGP team. Joshua Pearce is the team’s talented rookie: fast, ambitious, and not yet experienced enough to understand how much he still has to learn.
Pitt supplies the seasoned driver’s ease. Sonny has already experienced the danger, humiliation, and uncertainty of elite racing, so he carries himself like someone who has little left to prove. Idris plays Joshua from the opposite direction. His rookie is eager to establish himself, quick to challenge authority, and confident enough to mistake raw ability for complete control.
That difference gives the film more than a simple mentor-and-student relationship. Sonny’s coolness frustrates Joshua, while Joshua’s impatience forces Sonny to confront the reasons he left the sport. Their rivalry eventually becomes a reluctant partnership, and the emotional question is not only whether APXGP can win but whether these two drivers can work together before their competing egos damage the team.
The racing is the film’s biggest selling point
The production’s most important advantage is its access to real Formula 1 settings. The fictional APXGP team was filmed during actual Grand Prix weekends, alongside the real championship. That gives the movie a stronger sense of place than a conventional studio racing film: the garages, paddocks, track surroundings, and race-weekend scale are not merely recreated on a soundstage.

That does not make the film a documentary, nor does it mean every strategy, regulation, or team decision should be treated as a literal representation of Formula 1. The story is shaped for drama. But filming within real Grand Prix environments helps create the immediate racing texture that dominates the first reactions.
Reviews have repeatedly singled out the speed, sound, physical intensity, and visual scale. Joseph Kosinski, who directed Top Gun: Maverick, again demonstrates a strong command of action designed for a large screen. The appeal is not only that the cars move quickly; it is the feeling that the camera is being placed close enough to the risk for every braking zone, pass, and mistake to carry physical weight.
For viewers who are already interested in Formula 1, that real-world setting is the obvious attraction. For people who do not know the sport well, the racing remains accessible because the movie keeps returning to clear emotional stakes: an endangered team, a veteran attempting a comeback, and a young driver trying to prove he belongs.
What early reactions praised
- Brad Pitt’s star presence: Pitt gives Sonny the relaxed charisma expected from a movie-star lead while still suggesting a driver carrying old damage and unfinished business.
- Damson Idris’s energy: Idris prevents Joshua from becoming a disposable rookie sidekick. His impatience and ambition create much of the film’s dramatic pressure.
- The central pairing: Sonny’s veteran cool and Joshua’s volatile confidence are complementary rather than redundant. Their contrasting energies keep the familiar sports-drama structure moving.
- The racing sequences: The film’s strongest consensus is around the scale, sound, immediacy, and kinetic execution of its on-track scenes.
- Joseph Kosinski’s spectacle: Kosinski’s experience with practical-feeling, large-format action is central to the film’s crowd-pleasing appeal.
- Its accessibility: The official premise gives even non-experts an easy way into the story. You do not need to understand every technical detail of Formula 1 to recognize a comeback, a team under pressure, or a rookie trying to earn respect.
Where the movie may feel familiar
The principal criticism is not a lack of excitement. It is that the screenplay follows recognizable sports-movie lines. A fallen veteran returns, a struggling team needs results, a younger competitor must learn discipline, and personal conflict must eventually give way to cooperation.

- Easy Setup and Image Adjustment: Fine-tune your display with a powerful 1.3x optical zoom, H/V keystone, and auto-keystone correction; including four-corner adjustment to ensure a crisp, square image on any wall or screen
Some reviews also note that the movie bends realism when momentum demands it. That is a normal tension for a fictional racing blockbuster: Formula 1 provides the setting and technical flavor, but the story must compress time, heighten rivalries, and turn individual races into dramatic turning points.
The fairest way to describe the result is that F1 The Movie is conventional in its emotional machinery but unusually effective in its presentation. It does not need a completely new version of the comeback story if the racing feels immediate and the actors make the relationships watchable. Pitt and Idris supply that necessary charge.
Is it worth watching if you are not a Formula 1 expert?
Yes, based on the film’s premise and the early critical pattern. The movie is designed as a sports-action drama first, not as a technical examination of Formula 1. The basic stakes are easy to follow: APXGP is struggling, Sonny is attempting an unlikely return, and Joshua needs to develop without losing the aggression that makes him fast.
Experienced fans may pay closer attention to the race-weekend environment, team dynamics, and production access. Newcomers are more likely to respond to the character contrast and the spectacle. The film’s accessibility should be understood as an editorial inference from its straightforward underdog structure and review consensus, rather than as a claim that every viewer will respond to it identically.

The fictional team has also been extended beyond the movie. Formula 1 announced APXGP apparel, including hoodies, T-shirts, and hats, through the official F1 Store. Mattel’s Hot Wheels range includes an APXGP vehicle modeled on Sonny Hayes’s film car, with the movie’s black-and-gold livery.
For fans who want an interactive continuation, EA SPORTS partnered F1 25 with Team APXGP and added film-inspired content involving Sonny Hayes and Joshua Pearce. The game is an optional extension of the film’s racing premise, not a prerequisite for understanding or enjoying the movie. The official F1 The Album store also lists CD and vinyl editions for viewers more interested in the soundtrack and memorabilia side of the release.
Final verdict on the first reactions
The reaction story is straightforward: critics found a real theatrical rush in the racing and a particularly effective contrast between Brad Pitt’s veteran cool and Damson Idris’s rookie intensity. The plot may run on familiar racing lines, but the production’s real-Grand-Prix context, Kosinski’s visual control, and the leads’ chemistry make the material feel bigger and more energetic than an ordinary sports drama.
