The Bugatti Bolide is a track-only customer racing machine, not a road-going hypercar. Limited to 40 examples, it uses Bugatti’s 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 to produce 1,600 PS and 1,600 Nm. Its published dry weight is 1,450 kg, and Bugatti quotes almost 3,000 kg of downforce at maximum speed.

Bugatti’s original announced price was €4 million net, but all 40 cars were assigned and the final example was delivered in 2025. This review separates the production car from the 2020 concept, explains the real ownership requirements, and identifies the most accessible Bolide collectible.

The Bugatti Bolide is not a road-going hypercar. It is a customer-built, track-only racing machine limited to 40 examples, powered by Bugatti’s 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16. The production car is specified at 1,600 PS, 1,600 Nm, and a 1,450-kg dry weight, while Bugatti quotes almost 3,000 kg of downforce at maximum speed.

Bugatti announced a net price of €4 million when production was confirmed. All 40 cars were subsequently assigned, and Bugatti reported that the final Bolide was delivered in 2025. That makes the €4-million figure an original factory price—not a current used-market valuation or an all-in ownership cost.

For most enthusiasts, the most realistic way to own something connected to the Bolide is the licensed LEGO Technic Bugatti Bolide model, product 42151. The real car is a collector-grade circuit machine requiring private-track access, specialist preparation, transport, and racing equipment.

What is the Bugatti Bolide?

Bugatti first presented the Bolide in 2020 as an experimental study: an exceptionally light vehicle built around the company’s W16 engine with minimal concern for road-car comfort and maximum attention to aerodynamic performance. The response from prospective customers was strong enough for Bugatti to announce a 40-car production run in August 2021.

The production Bolide is explicitly a racing vehicle and is not intended for public roads. It is therefore fundamentally different from the Chiron family. A Chiron is a road-going grand tourer that happens to be extraordinarily fast; the Bolide is a circuit-focused machine that happens to be based around Bugatti’s production W16.

That distinction affects everything from its tires and brakes to its seating position, safety equipment, operating environment, and ownership model. The Bolide is designed for repeated use at private circuits and organized owner events, not for commuting, touring, or registration as an ordinary road car.

Power 1,600 PS
Torque 1,600 Nm from 2,250 rpm
Dry weight 1,450 kg
Drive system All-wheel drive with electronically controlled differentials
Brakes Bespoke carbon-carbon system developed with Brembo
Track tires Michelin Pilot Sport slicks
Downforce Almost 3,000 kg at maximum speed, according to Bugatti
Production 40 examples
Original announced price €4 million net
Road use Track-only; not intended for public roads

The downforce figure is a manufacturer-published specification, not an independently verified lap-test result. Bugatti has also not established a confirmed production top-speed figure that should be presented as fact.

Concept versus production Bolide: the important fact check

Many online descriptions combine the 2020 concept’s simulated figures with the production car’s specifications. That produces an impressive but inaccurate picture of the customer vehicle.

Specification 2020 experimental concept Production Bolide
Power Up to 1,850 PS with 110-octane racing fuel 1,600 PS with globally available 98-RON fuel
Torque 1,850 Nm in the concept disclosure 1,600 Nm from 2,250 rpm
Dry weight Theoretical 1,240 kg 1,450 kg
Top speed Simulated above 500 km/h No confirmed production figure should be stated
Production status One-off experimental study 40 customer cars
Road use Track-focused concept Track-only racing vehicle

The 1,850-PS and 1,240-kg numbers belong to the earlier concept. Bugatti recalibrated the production engine for 98-RON fuel so customers could operate the car with fuel available across international markets. The production car’s official output is therefore 1,600 PS, and its published dry weight is 1,450 kg.

Engine, fuel, and performance

The Bolide retains the 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 that defined Bugatti’s modern era, but the engine installation is adapted to circuit use. Bugatti says the engine, intake, exhaust, and cooling systems were tuned for higher-revving operation and a more immediate response on track.

With 1,600 PS and a 1,450-kg dry weight, the theoretical power-to-weight ratio is approximately 1,103 PS per metric ton before accounting for fluids, driver, and track equipment. That number helps explain the car’s intended environment, but it should not be mistaken for a lap-time prediction. Tire temperature, fuel load, circuit configuration, aero setup, driver skill, and operating conditions will all matter enormously.

There is no responsible basis for quoting the concept’s simulated 500-plus-km/h speed as the production Bolide’s top speed. The production car’s development priority is circuit performance and repeatability, not a public-road speed record.

Aerodynamics and chassis

The Bolide’s appearance is largely a consequence of airflow management. Its bodywork incorporates a front splitter, rear diffuser, roof-mounted air intake, extensive cooling openings, and a large adjustable rear wing. The wing can be configured for different track requirements, balancing straight-line efficiency against cornering load.

Bugatti says the front splitter was refined to maintain aerodynamic balance when the car transitions from high-speed running to heavy braking. That is a critical detail on a vehicle producing extreme aerodynamic load: the driver needs predictable behavior as speed, ride height, and braking forces change rapidly.

Bugatti quotes almost 3,000 kg of downforce at maximum speed. In practical terms, the figure describes the amount of aerodynamic load the car can generate under the stated conditions; it does not mean the car weighs 3,000 kg or that the value is available at every speed. Downforce rises and falls with speed and setup.

The chassis specification includes all-wheel drive, electronically controlled differentials, Michelin Pilot Sport slicks, and a track-oriented thermal-management system. These parts work as a package. Slick tires need appropriate temperatures and a suitable circuit, while the brakes, engine, transmission, and cooling systems must cope with repeated high-load sessions rather than isolated acceleration runs.

Brakes and thermal management

Bugatti worked with Brembo on a bespoke carbon-carbon braking system that Bugatti describes as the largest carbon-carbon brake system Brembo had produced. Development included dynamometer testing, track testing, and evaluation of the car’s wet mode.

Carbon-carbon brakes can deliver outstanding performance in their intended temperature range, but that phrase matters. A track-focused braking system is not automatically at its best during cold, slow-speed operation. The Bolide’s braking package, slick tires, aero load, and cooling system are all designed around circuit use, where the car can generate and maintain the temperatures needed for consistent performance.

Safety equipment and driver environment

The Bolide is uncompromising in its purpose, but it is not a bare engineering buck. Bugatti lists safety and usability features intended for its customer-track environment, including:

  • HANS compatibility
  • An automatic fire-extinguishing system
  • A fuel bladder with pressure refueling
  • Central wheel locking
  • A six-point safety-belt system
  • Climate control
  • Power steering
  • Ergonomically designed seats

Bugatti says the vehicle was developed in line with international FIA safety standards and its own customer-safety requirements. That wording should not be expanded into a claim that the Bolide is homologated for a particular racing series. No specific series homologation is established by the available material.

Bugatti Bolide review: what is it like in context?

A conventional road-car review is the wrong measuring stick for the Bolide. There is no meaningful discussion of ride comfort, luggage space, fuel economy, traffic behavior, or public-road refinement because those attributes are outside the brief.

What the Bolide does exceptionally well

  • It turns the W16 into a circuit centerpiece. The engine, cooling, aero, tires, brakes, and safety systems are developed around track use rather than grand-touring compromises.
  • It creates enormous aerodynamic potential. Bugatti’s almost-3,000-kg downforce claim places the emphasis on high-speed cornering stability and load generation.
  • It is purpose-built rather than cosmetically aggressive. The vents, roof intake, diffuser, wing, and low canopy are functional elements of the performance package.
  • It offers a rare ownership experience. The car represents an extreme final expression of Bugatti’s W16 era, delivered through a managed circuit and support ecosystem.

What limits the experience

  • No normal public-road use. The Bolide cannot be treated as a road-legal Chiron variant.
  • Specialized consumables. Slick tires and carbon-carbon brakes require the right conditions, preparation, inspection, and replacement planning.
  • Logistical complexity. Owners need access to suitable private circuits and arrangements for transport, storage, technical preparation, and support.
  • No independent road test. Bugatti’s development and shakedown reports demonstrate engineering activity, but they are not a substitute for a third-party instrumented lap test.

Bugatti has reported aerodynamic testing, brake evaluation, customer preparation, and final shakedown work at circuits including Circuit de Mirecourt. Those are manufacturer-reported validation activities, not independent evidence of a specific lap time.

Ownership, support, and track events

Bolide ownership is closer to participation in a specialist track program than to taking delivery of an exotic road car. Bugatti has described Certified Bolide Centers and specialist assistance with pre-delivery inspection, personalized handover, storage, servicing, and vehicle preparation.

The company has also documented organized owner events. A March 2025 event took place at Circuit Paul Ricard, with guidance from Bugatti Pilote Officiel drivers Bruno Spengler and Andy Wallace. Bugatti later documented a March 2026 event at Miami International Autodrome. These events illustrate the kind of structured environment the car is intended to inhabit.

Prospective owners should expect the practical questions to be as important as the headline specifications:

  • Which circuits can accommodate the car and its operating requirements?
  • How will the car be transported and stored?
  • Who will handle setup, inspection, tire service, and brake support?
  • What driver coaching and safety procedures are available?
  • How will fuel, fluids, spares, and track-side equipment be managed?

Bugatti’s public material does not establish a standard maintenance schedule, tire life, brake-replacement cost, insurance price, transport cost, or annual running cost. Those figures should not be guessed from the €4-million factory price.

Bugatti Bolide price and availability

Bugatti announced a net unit price of €4 million and a production limit of 40 cars. Since all examples were assigned and the final car was delivered in 2025, the Bolide is not a normal new-car purchase available through an open order book.

The original price also does not automatically tell you what a particular example is worth today. A resale transaction could be affected by taxes, delivery and transport charges, bespoke specifications, mileage, track history, provenance, service status, and market conditions. A current resale estimate requires contemporary auction or private-market evidence.

Photos and design details

Bugatti’s official Bolide media archive emphasizes a low canopy, exposed carbon fiber, roof intake, prominent rear wing, large cooling apertures, the horseshoe grille, and an X-shaped rear-light motif. These are among the clearest visual clues that the Bolide is a circuit machine rather than a road car with a more aggressive body kit.

When publishing photos, use official Bugatti imagery only with the appropriate rights and attribution. Captions should identify whether an image shows the experimental concept, the production car, a customer-specific livery, or the LEGO Technic recreation. Those versions should not be presented as interchangeable.

Bugatti’s final customer car, shown in 2025, featured bespoke Black Blue and Special Blue Lyonnais exterior details with a Lake Blue Alcantara interior. That specification is an example of personalization, not a universal production color scheme.

What the Bolide is—and is not

Accurate description Description to avoid
40-car, track-only customer racing vehicle Road-legal Bugatti hypercar
1,600 PS production specification 1,850 PS production specification
1,450-kg published production dry weight 1,240-kg production weight
Almost 3,000 kg of manufacturer-quoted downforce at maximum speed An independently verified lap-test result
€4 million net original announced price Guaranteed current resale or all-in ownership price
Customer vehicle developed around private-circuit use Car homologated for a specific racing series without documentation

Verdict

The Bugatti Bolide is best understood as the most extreme production application of Bugatti’s W16-era engineering, not as a faster road car. Its real identity is defined by 1,600 PS, a 1,450-kg dry weight, slick tires, carbon-carbon brakes, adjustable aero, extensive safety equipment, and a life based around private circuits.

The concept’s 1,850 PS, theoretical 1,240 kg, and simulated 500-plus-km/h performance make for memorable headlines, but they should not be used as production specifications. The customer car is less fantastical on paper and more significant in reality: a finished, supported, 40-unit track machine that reached customers and completed Bugatti’s W16 story on its own terms.

For nearly everyone else, the LEGO Technic 42151 model is the sensible physical collectible. For the few owners, the important purchase is not simply the car—it is access to the circuits, technical support, transport, preparation, and driver development needed to use it properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Bugatti Bolide cost?

Bugatti announced a net price of €4 million. All 40 examples were assigned, and the final car was delivered in 2025, so that figure is the original announced factory price rather than a current open-market price.

What are the Bugatti Bolide’s production specifications?

The production Bolide has 1,600 PS, 1,600 Nm from 2,250 rpm, and a published dry weight of 1,450 kg. Bugatti quotes almost 3,000 kg of downforce at maximum speed.

Does the production Bolide make 1,850 PS?

No. The 1,850-PS output, theoretical 1,240-kg dry weight, and simulated speed above 500 km/h were figures associated with the 2020 experimental concept. The production car was recalibrated for 98-RON fuel and specified at 1,600 PS.

Is there a Bugatti Bolide model kit?

The licensed LEGO Technic Bugatti Bolide 42151 is the most accessible physical alternative. It has 905 pieces, opening scissor doors, a detailed cockpit, and a W16 engine with moving pistons. The official U.S. listing has shown it as sold out and retiring soon, so availability and pricing should be checked before purchase.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The production Bugatti Bolide is a 40-car, €4-million-net, track-only W16 machine—not a road-legal hypercar. Its correct production figures are 1,600 PS, 1,600 Nm, and 1,450 kg dry, with almost 3,000 kg of manufacturer-quoted downforce at maximum speed. The 1,850-PS, 1,240-kg, and 500-plus-km/h figures belong to the earlier experimental concept.
