The October 2–4 event was officially the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia: a one-off hosting arrangement to preserve the Bahrain round. As of October 7, Malaysia had opened early discussions about hosting F1 again, with no confirmed Malaysian Grand Prix return.
What was the 2026 F1 race at Sepang?
Formula 1 and the FIA announced on July 26, 2026, that Sepang International Circuit would host the Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2–4. The race was placed between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix. Its official name was the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. The arrangement among Formula 1, the FIA, and the governments of Bahrain and Malaysia was intended to preserve a race that otherwise would not have taken place; the rest of the 2026 calendar was to remain unchanged. Formula 1’s announcement described a special hosting arrangement, not a restored Malaysian Grand Prix.
Sepang hosted the Malaysian Grand Prix from 1999 through 2017. Formula 1 counted 19 Malaysian Grands Prix in that period, and its September 2026 preview described the Sepang event as F1’s return to the circuit after nine years. Formula 1’s history and preview distinguish that return to the venue from bringing back the Malaysian Grand Prix as a recurring championship round.
Will Malaysia return as a permanent F1 host?
It was under discussion, not confirmed, as of October 7, 2026. After the race, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government had initiated talks about hosting F1 again and would speak further with F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali. He characterized the matter as early-stage and said it required careful evaluation. BERNAMA’s report also records his pre-race comments on the factors for further Cabinet discussion.

Anwar cited the crowded F1 calendar, commitments to existing host countries, Malaysia’s capacity to host, and potential benefits to the economy and public. The central decision is whether national, economic and public benefits justify the full costs of hosting and organizing a race, given calendar space and existing contractual commitments.
As of that date, the available reports did not state a current hosting-fee quote, a total cost estimate, government approval, a signed contract, a target year or a final cost-benefit calculation. Those details remain unknown; older estimates or speculation cannot establish what a future Malaysian race would cost.

What happened in the 2026 race?
Heavy rain delayed the race. Max Verstappen won for Red Bull, Kimi Antonelli finished second for Mercedes, and Lewis Hamilton took third for Ferrari, according to BERNAMA’s race report. Verstappen had also won the last Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, in 2017.
Before the event, Sepang reported about 95,000 three-day passes sold against a target of 100,000, according to BERNAMA on October 1, 2026. These were pre-race sales, not a final attendance count. The same report said the circuit’s three-day F1 attendance record was 126,690 spectators, set at the 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix.

Why does Sepang remain distinctive for F1?
Formula 1 lists Sepang International Circuit at 5.543 km. Its profile describes a wide layout with long straights, heavy braking zones and fast, flowing corners that create overtaking opportunities. The 2026 Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia was scheduled for 56 laps, a distance of 310.417 km. These are the figures on Formula 1’s circuit and event profile, accessed October 7, 2026.
Heat and humidity challenge drivers, while sudden tropical rain can change the conditions quickly—as the 2026 race delay demonstrated. The circuit is close to Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Before the event, Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso said: “I didn’t think that I will race in Malaysia again, so that’s a golden ticket that I take. An incredible circuit, demanding race, temperature, humidity – like Singapore, but in daytime.” Formula 1 also reported his description of Sepang as “probably the nicest track” among the remaining races. Formula 1’s report published both remarks before the event.

What would need to be weighed before a return?
- Benefits: the national, economic and public value of hosting, which the Prime Minister said needed assessment.
- Costs: the full hosting and organizing expenses. No current figure or final calculation was reported.
- Feasibility: space in an already crowded calendar, Malaysia’s ability to host, and commitments to existing race hosts.
The 2026 event showed that Sepang could host an F1 race under a special agreement. It did not settle whether a recurring Malaysian Grand Prix is affordable, beneficial or contractually feasible.
