The $9,500 figure is an asking price, not an established value, and the available account leaves key questions about the title, the car’s identity and condition, and the advertised equipment unanswered. The reported 72,000 miles and one-owner story could make this 1986 Dodge Omni Shelby GLH Turbo worth investigating, but neither is independently verified.
What is reportedly for sale?
A Jalopnik article dated October 5, 2026, describes a Facebook Marketplace listing in Smithville, Missouri, for a 1986 Dodge Omni Shelby GLH Turbo, commonly called the GLH-T. The article reports an asking price of $9,500 and says the seller claims the car has 72,000 miles and one-owner history; the seller reportedly says their father bought it new. These are claims from the advertisement as reported by Jalopnik, not independently verified facts. The article assumes a clean title because the advertisement does not state title status.
The reported specification is a turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 146 horsepower, paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. The listing reportedly includes a Direct Connection body kit, five-lug factory alloy wheels, hatch louvers, new tires, and an OEM fuel pump. Reported flaws include paint wear and a drooping headliner. The air conditioning is disconnected, and the seller reportedly says the compressor cycles on and off. There is no independent inspection or mechanical diagnosis establishing what repairs the car needs.
Is this a GLH-T or a GLHS?
The listing identifies the car as a GLH-T. That is not interchangeable with GLHS: a GLHS was a separate Shelby conversion, and there is no evidence in the available account that this car was converted.

What distinguished the GLHS?
The Shelby Registry says Carroll Shelby bought the last 500 black 1986 GLH Turbos and converted them at Whittier into GLHS cars. The registry describes an intercooler, different turbocharger, intake changes, larger injectors and throttle body. It gives the GLHS output as 175 hp and 175 lb-ft, compared with the GLH-T’s reported 146 hp. It also lists Koni adjustable dampers, 205/50VR-15 tires and Shelby Centurion wheels, and gives a GLHS list price of $10,995. Those are GLHS details; they should not be attributed to this advertised GLH-T without documentation.
What do the period performance figures actually measure?
Car and Driver’s April 1986 road test tested a GLHS, not this listed GLH-T. Its figures—6.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph, a 14.9-second quarter-mile at 93 mph, a 130-mph top speed and 0.81 g on the skidpad—describe that period GLHS test, not the condition or performance of the car for sale. The review’s Patrick Bedard, credited to Dick Kelley, wrote: “The GLHS does a great job of putting its power to the ground.” That praise, too, concerns the GLHS.

Does $9,500 look like a fair price?
The available evidence does not establish a defensible current market value for this GLH-T. The most concrete auction reference is not a direct comparison: RM Sotheby’s records a 1986 Shelby Omni GLHS sold for $9,460 at its 2015 Auburn Spring auction. That was GLHS number 189, a different model, and its auction page says the title was in transit. A decade-old sale of a GLHS cannot show that $9,500 is fair for a GLH-T offered in 2026.
For a useful comparison, look for sales of the same model and consider documented modifications, originality and completeness, verified condition, title and provenance, as well as sale date, location and condition. The available sources do not provide current, directly comparable GLH-T transactions or a verified valuation for this particular car.

What should a buyer verify before making an offer?
Treat the advertisement as a lead, not a substitute for records or an inspection. Before using the asking price to make a decision, work through the questions it leaves open:
- Confirm identity and title. Check the vehicle identification details and paperwork against the claimed 1986 GLH-T identity. Establish the title status directly; the listing account does not state it.
- Substantiate mileage and provenance. Ask for service records, ownership documents and other history that can support the claimed 72,000 miles and one-owner story. The claim alone does not verify either.
- Inspect the car and equipment. Have a qualified mechanic familiar with older turbocharged cars assess its mechanical condition. Confirm which listed equipment is present and complete, including the body kit, wheels, louvers and fuel pump, rather than assuming the advertisement establishes originality or condition.
- Diagnose the air conditioning. The reported compressor cycling does not establish the cause of the disconnected R12 system’s problem. Get a qualified diagnosis and a compatibility check before considering an R12-to-R134a retrofit kit; no fit or repair need is confirmed for this car.
- Price from relevant evidence. Compare documented GLH-T sales with similar identity, condition and completeness. Do not treat the 2015 GLHS auction result as a current GLH-T valuation.
The source account does not establish whether the advertisement is still live or whether the seller’s claims are accurate. Any decision should be based on the current listing, the car itself and records—not on the reported details alone.
