Mid-season prediction: Kimi Antonelli for the 2026 Drivers’ Championship and Mercedes for the Constructors’ Championship. This forecast is based on the standings after the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 12, 2026, with the Dutch Grand Prix next on August 21–23. Confidence is medium, not high, because 12 rounds remain and the 2026 technical rules are still evolving.
Prediction: Kimi Antonelli is the best bet-free forecast to win the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, while Mercedes is the clear favorite for the Constructors’ Championship. This is a mid-season projection, not a settled result: the snapshot is taken on August 12, 2026, after the Hungarian Grand Prix and before the Dutch Grand Prix, Round 12 of a 23-round season.

The mid-season championship picture
This forecast uses the current standings and completed-race results rather than pre-season expectations. Antonelli leads Lewis Hamilton by 50 points, and Mercedes leads Ferrari by 72. Those are meaningful advantages, but 12 rounds remain and the 2026 regulations have already changed during the season, making the second half less predictable than a normal championship run.
| Driver | Team | Points | Gap to Antonelli | Forecast tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | 219 | Leader | Favorite |
| Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | 169 | 50 behind | Primary challenger |
| George Russell | Mercedes | 160 | 59 behind | Live challenger |
| Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | 138 | 81 behind | Team-level threat; individual outsider |
| Lando Norris | McLaren | 128 | 91 behind | Long-shot challenger |
| Max Verstappen | Red Bull Racing | 109 | 110 behind | Spoiler |
Oscar Piastri is seventh on 92 points, which helps explain McLaren’s stronger team position than Verstappen’s individual ranking alone would suggest.

Constructors’ Championship standings
| Team | Points | Gap to Mercedes | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes | 379 | Leader | Strongest package and largest team margin |
| Ferrari | 307 | 72 behind | Most credible two-driver challenge |
| McLaren | 220 | 159 behind | Still capable of individual race wins |
| Red Bull Racing | 177 | 202 behind | Needs a major performance reversal |
Mercedes’ total is being produced by Antonelli and Russell. Ferrari’s 307 points come from Hamilton and Leclerc, while McLaren’s leading pair are Norris and Piastri. That two-car scoring matters: Ferrari does not currently have the individual championship leader, but it has the clearest route to making the team championship competitive.
Why Kimi Antonelli leads the forecast
1. His points advantage is substantial but not unassailable
Antonelli has 219 points, giving him a 50-point cushion over Hamilton and a 59-point cushion over his Mercedes teammate Russell. Leclerc is 81 points back, Norris is 91 behind, and Verstappen trails by 110.
The important distinction is that Antonelli is not merely leading a tightly packed standings table. He has separated himself from every direct rival while driving for the strongest team. A reliability failure, penalty, or run of poor strategy calls could reduce the advantage quickly, but the current burden is on the challengers to take points away from him.

The season record credits Antonelli with seven victories in the first 11 rounds, along with a second-place finish in Austria and third place in Hungary. The winning pattern has covered different types of venue, including Australia, China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco, and Belgium. That variety is more persuasive than a run of wins concentrated at one circuit type.
Mercedes has also produced wins and podium-level results through Russell. Russell is behind Antonelli, but he is not driving an inferior car; his 160 points make him a genuine title contender if Mercedes continues to provide winning machinery and Antonelli suffers further setbacks.
3. Belgium showed both Antonelli’s momentum and the danger of reliability problems
Before the Belgian Grand Prix, Associated Press reporting noted that recent reliability problems had reduced Antonelli’s advantage. Antonelli then won at Spa, while Russell retired, increasing the championship lead. That combination is a useful summary of the current title race: Mercedes has the pace to control weekends, but a single mechanical failure or retirement can change the points picture quickly.
Why Lewis Hamilton is the most serious alternative
Hamilton is second with 169 points, 50 behind Antonelli. He has won the Barcelona-Catalunya round and has added repeated podium finishes, giving Ferrari a driver with both the pace and experience to capitalize if Mercedes’ advantage narrows.
Hamilton’s route to the Drivers’ title is straightforward but demanding: Ferrari must remain close enough to Mercedes on most weekends, Hamilton must consistently finish ahead of Antonelli, and Mercedes must continue dividing points between two title-capable drivers. Ferrari’s 307 Constructors’ points show that the team is not relying on one isolated result. Hamilton and Leclerc are producing the strongest combined challenge to Mercedes.
George Russell remains a real title contender
Russell’s 59-point deficit is significant, but it is recoverable with 12 rounds remaining. He has scored wins in the season record and finished second in China and Barcelona-Catalunya. His main disadvantage is not a lack of access to a competitive car; it is that Antonelli currently has the larger share of Mercedes’ points and the stronger momentum.
Russell’s best title route is an internal reversal at Mercedes. If he begins converting more of the team’s qualifying and race pace into victories while Antonelli encounters another reliability problem, the gap can become much smaller. Mercedes would then face a difficult strategic question: whether to maintain equal treatment between its drivers or prioritize the driver with the stronger mathematical position later in the year.

Ferrari is the primary Constructors’ Championship upset route
Ferrari is 72 points behind Mercedes, which is a much more manageable deficit than McLaren’s 159-point gap or Red Bull Racing’s 202-point deficit. Hamilton is second in the Drivers’ standings and Leclerc is fourth, so Ferrari has two cars scoring near the front rather than one driver carrying the challenge.
Leclerc’s victory in Britain and second place in Belgium, combined with Hamilton’s Barcelona win, demonstrate the team’s ability to convert opportunities. Ferrari does not necessarily need to dominate Mercedes immediately. It needs consistent two-car finishes, strong execution on high-variance weekends, and a few races in which Mercedes loses points through reliability, strategy, or an internal split.
That makes Ferrari the most credible team-level threat even though neither Ferrari driver is currently the favorite for the individual title.
McLaren and Red Bull need a larger swing
McLaren: dangerous in individual races, distant in the team standings
Norris is fifth with 128 points and Piastri is seventh with 92. Norris won the Hungarian Grand Prix, so McLaren clearly remains capable of winning races. The problem is the 159-point gap to Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Norris could still make a late individual surge if McLaren finds a major advantage at several upcoming venues, but a full team comeback would require both drivers to score heavily while Mercedes and Ferrari suffer repeated losses. McLaren is therefore more credible as a race-winning spoiler than as the leading championship forecast.
Red Bull Racing and Verstappen: a long-shot spoiler
Verstappen is sixth with 109 points, and Red Bull Racing has 177 Constructors’ points. He has not won any of the first 11 listed rounds, although he finished third in Canada and Belgium and second in Hungary.
To become a serious title threat, Red Bull would need a major improvement in average performance as well as unusually poor consistency from the drivers ahead. Verstappen remains capable of changing individual race outcomes, but the current points deficit does not justify making him the primary forecast.
What the 2026 regulations mean for this prediction
The 2026 cars and power units are operating under one of Formula 1’s most substantial recent regulation changes. The FIA’s package covers power units, chassis design, aerodynamics, safety, and sustainability. The power-unit rules remove the MGU-H, increase the electrical contribution, and require fully sustainable fuel.
Those changes make historical assumptions less reliable. A team that was strong at a circuit under the previous generation of cars cannot automatically be expected to repeat that performance under the new energy-management demands.
Energy management has already been adjusted
The FIA approved amendments after pre-season testing and early-season feedback. Among the February changes was a requirement to control compression ratio in both hot and cold conditions from June 1, while the FIA said that further evaluation of energy management was still ongoing.

Additional changes took effect from Miami:
- Maximum permitted recharge was reduced from 8 MJ to 7 MJ.
- Peak superclip power was increased from 250 kW to 350 kW.
- Boost limits were changed.
- MGU-K deployment rules were modified.
These are not cosmetic revisions. They can alter how teams manage qualifying laps, overtaking opportunities, battery deployment, and race pace. The competitive order at the start of the season should therefore not be treated as fixed evidence for every remaining circuit.
A late power-unit development window adds another variable
The FIA has also described an additional-development mechanism that can allow some power-unit manufacturers to upgrade homologated units when specified criteria are met. The available official material does not establish which manufacturer will gain the greatest benefit, so this should be treated as a genuine uncertainty rather than as evidence that Mercedes or any rival is certain to improve.
If a manufacturer unlocks a meaningful late-season gain, the effect could be larger than usual because the field is still learning how to extract performance from the new power-unit and aerodynamic rules.

The next race is the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 21–23. The season then moves through Italy, Madrid, Azerbaijan, the Malaysia-hosted Bahrain round, Singapore, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi. The finale is scheduled for December 4–6.

| 13 | Italy | After the Netherlands |
| 14 | Madrid | After Italy |
| 15 | Azerbaijan | After Madrid |
| 16 | Malaysia-hosted Bahrain | After Azerbaijan |
| 17 | Singapore | After the Bahrain round |

| 20 | Brazil | Late-season run |
| 21 | Las Vegas | Late-season run |
| 22 | Qatar | Before the finale |
| 23 | Abu Dhabi | December 4–6 |
Zandvoort is the immediate test of whether the post-summer-break order has changed. The following European races at Monza and Madrid should be read as separate evidence rather than assumed to reproduce earlier results. Monza, Madrid, and the later street and high-temperature venues will place different demands on energy deployment, tyre management, cooling, and aerodynamic efficiency.
The late sequence through the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Las Vegas also creates a high-variance portion of the calendar before Qatar and Abu Dhabi. A 50-point individual lead and a 72-point team lead are valuable, but neither should be treated as decisive with this many opportunities remaining.

How each upset route would work
| Challenger | What must happen | Current assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari must stay near Mercedes, and Hamilton must consistently outscore Antonelli. | Most credible individual alternative. |
| George Russell | He must turn Mercedes’ pace into more wins while Antonelli loses points through reliability or poor results. | Recoverable 59-point deficit; genuine threat. |
| Charles Leclerc | Ferrari needs sustained two-car scoring and more Mercedes failures or mistakes. | Important to Ferrari’s team bid; harder individual route. |
| Lando Norris | McLaren must find a substantial performance swing and Norris must dominate the remaining rounds. | Race-winning threat, but distant title contender. |
| Max Verstappen | Red Bull needs a major improvement and the leaders must suffer repeated losses. | Long-shot spoiler. |

Final forecast
The evidence favors Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship more strongly than it favors any driver in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes has the best car-and-points combination, but its two drivers divide the scoring. Antonelli currently offsets that structural disadvantage with the largest individual lead and the strongest results profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kimi Antonelli guaranteed to win the 2026 F1 Drivers’ Championship?
No. Antonelli leads with 219 points, but 12 rounds remain and his advantage has already been affected by reliability problems. The 2026 regulations are also new enough that late-season performance changes remain plausible.
Can George Russell still win the 2026 Drivers’ Championship?
Yes. Russell is 59 points behind Antonelli, shares the strongest car, and has already produced winning and podium-level results. He needs to outscore Antonelli consistently and benefit from further lost points for his teammate.
Why is Ferrari Mercedes’ biggest Constructors’ Championship threat?
Ferrari trails Mercedes by 72 points, but Hamilton and Leclerc are second and fourth in the Drivers’ standings. Consistent two-car scoring gives Ferrari the clearest route to overturning the Constructors’ deficit if Mercedes suffers reliability or operational problems.
The Bottom Line
2026 Drivers’ Champion: Kimi Antonelli
2026 Constructors’ Champion: Mercedes
Confidence: Medium, not high. The lead is real, but 12 rounds remain and the 2026 power-unit and energy-management rules are still producing uncertainty.
