The Subaru BRZ uses a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder rated at 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Subaru’s stated reason for the layout is not maximum output: the compact BOXER engine can sit low and farther back in the front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car, supporting the balance and response the BRZ is designed around. “Doesn’t need a turbo” describes that design choice—not a technical rule that a turbo cannot be fitted.
What engine is in the Subaru BRZ?
The BRZ’s 2.4-liter DOHC BOXER engine is naturally aspirated, meaning it draws in air without a turbocharger. Subaru lists its output at 228 hp at 7,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm in the 2027 BRZ specifications. Those are manufacturer ratings, not independent dynamometer measurements.
Engine descriptions can differ by model year. Subaru’s 2026 BRZ features page describes direct injection, while the 2027 specifications list both direct and port injection. Check the specifications for the particular model year rather than assuming every detail applies across the range.
Why does Subaru use a naturally aspirated engine?
The engine layout supports the BRZ’s design goals
The BRZ is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Subaru says the BOXER’s compact horizontal layout allows it to be installed lower and farther rearward, contributing to balance, a lower center of gravity, and dynamic response. That is the manufacturer’s design rationale; the available specifications do not quantify a handling gain attributable specifically to engine placement.

- Fitment: Cold Air Intake System Kit Replacement for Scion 2013-2016 FR-S, Subaru 2013-2020 BRZ, Toyota 2017-2020 86 Engine (Fits Manual and Auto Transmission) (Please confirm your vehicle model using the top-left selector before purchasing).[Package included]: 1 x Air Filter, 1 x Air Intake Tube, 1 x Silicon Hose, 1 x Silicon Connecter, 1 x Filter Heat Shield, All accessories on the picture are included. Comes with MAF sensor interface (sensor not included, sold separately)
- Increase Acceleration & Towing Power: This cold air intake kit enhances acceleration and produces an assertive engine growl during acceleration. It creates a less restrictive airflow path, increasing the intake of cold, oxygen-rich air—estimated to deliver up to 14 additional horsepower and 13 ft-lbs of torque. The engine growl is noticeable during acceleration and subsides to a quiet tone at highway speeds
- Guaranteed Increase In Horsepower & Torque: The system includes a performance air filter, specially designed tubing, and a custom heat shield that protects the intake from engine heat. Together, these components ensure a verified increase in both horsepower and torque
- Sturdy & Efficient Material: Made of durable aluminum, the intake kit features mandrel-bent, powder-coated tubes and custom heat shields to improve airflow. It offers up to 95% better filtration efficiency than OEM paper filters, while the heat shield minimizes exposure to engine compartment temperatures
- Reusable & Easy Maintenance: The reusable high-flow air intake filter uses Non-woven Dry Filter to trap dirt and dust while maintaining smooth airflow. It requires cleaning only once every 100,000 miles under normal highway driving conditions. Installation is simple—bolt on in under an hour with basic hand tools. Philtop Cold Air Intake is one of the easiest upgrades to boost horsepower and torque
Subaru emphasizes power delivery as well as peak output
In its 2022 BRZ brochure, Subaru says the engine was optimized to deliver power and torque more quickly and over a wider rev range. That describes the intended character of the engine, not an independently measured comparison with a turbocharged alternative.
In practical terms, the BRZ’s engine is part of a package built around its layout and the way Subaru wants power delivered. The official specifications establish the engine’s output and the car’s configuration, but do not show that naturally aspirated power is objectively better for acceleration, lap times, reliability, or cost.

How does it compare with Subaru’s turbocharged 2.4-liter?
Subaru uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER in the WRX, showing that the company uses turbocharging in a different vehicle with a different configuration. The figures below are Subaru’s model-year specifications, not results from a controlled comparison.
| Model and source | Engine and induction | Horsepower | Torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2027 BRZ, Subaru specifications | 2.4-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder; naturally aspirated | 228 hp at 7,000 rpm | 184 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm |
| 2026 WRX, Subaru specifications | 2.4-liter BOXER; turbocharged | 271 hp at 5,600 rpm | 258 lb-ft at 2,000–5,200 rpm |
The WRX’s higher listed output does not make it a direct stand-in for a turbocharged BRZ. These specifications do not establish that the engines are interchangeable, nor do they compare acceleration, handling, heat management, purchase cost, or long-term reliability under controlled conditions.

What should you take from “doesn’t need a turbo”?
It is best read as a statement about the BRZ’s chosen character: Subaru pairs a naturally aspirated engine with a low-mounted BOXER layout in a rear-wheel-drive sports car. The figures and design explanation support that interpretation. They do not prove that adding a turbo is impossible, that every buyer prefers naturally aspirated power, or that a turbo would necessarily make the car worse.
