It was not the first pink Cadillac he owned: that earlier car burned in 1955, and Elvis had the surviving Fleetwood repainted pink afterward.
Which Cadillac is Elvis’s famous Pink Cadillac?
The enduring icon is a 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood sedan with a pink body and white roof. Graceland identifies it as the car Elvis bought on July 7, 1955; Charlotte Motor Speedway also described the vehicle as a pink-and-white 1955 Fleetwood sedan in its announcement of a temporary 2020 display.
The familiar name can blur two cars into one. The first pink Cadillac burned in June 1955; the surviving Fleetwood is the replacement that became the famous pink-and-white car.
How did the car become pink and white?
It began blue with a black roof
According to Graceland’s account, the Fleetwood was originally blue with a black roof. Elvis had it repainted pink after his first pink Cadillac was destroyed.

The first pink Cadillac burned
Graceland says brake lining caught fire while Elvis was driving back from a gig on June 5, 1955, and the first car burned. The replacement Fleetwood initially retained its black roof.
An accident led to the white roof
After an accident in September 1955, the surviving Cadillac’s upholstery was replaced, its bodywork was retouched, and its roof was painted white. Those changes produced the pink-and-white appearance associated with Elvis today.

Graceland says Elvis later gave the Cadillac to his mother, Gladys. The car’s matching pink interior and an “E” detail in the floorboard are also noted in Graceland’s account.
In Graceland’s June 1, 2015 announcement about the London display, Priscilla Presley said, “The Pink Cadillac meant so much to Elvis and his mother Gladys, and became one of the most famous cars in history.”
