Short answer: DuroMax says its generators are designed in Ontario, California, and built overseas to its specifications. That statement does not identify the country where every standalone DuroMax engine is manufactured. One retailer labels the XP7HP engine as imported, while a secondary report attributes China assembly to a company representative. As for quality, the evidence supports judging each engine by its specifications, application fit, warranty and support—not by an unverified brand-wide reliability claim.
Where are DuroMax engines built?
DuroMax’s official FAQ says: “Our generators are designed by our engineering team in Ontario, California, and built overseas to our specifications.” The wording applies to generators; it does not give a named factory or country of manufacture for every standalone engine. DuroMax’s FAQ is the clearest official statement on production location.
For a standalone engine, the available evidence is narrower. Lowe’s labels the XP7HP “imported” but does not identify the exporting country in its listing. SlashGear reports that most engine assembly takes place in China, attributing that information to a company representative on Amazon. Treat China as a reported assembly location, not as an official, model-by-model country-of-origin declaration. Lowe’s XP7HP listing and SlashGear’s report provide those respective details.
Country of manufacture alone does not establish whether an engine is well made or suitable for a particular job. The available evidence does not identify a current official factory list covering every DuroMax engine model.

Are DuroMax engines any good?
DuroMax may be a solid value for the right small-engine application, but the answer depends on the exact model and the equipment it must power. The company publishes useful specifications and warranty terms. However, its own quality and reliability descriptions are promotional, and the available customer ratings do not establish a representative failure rate or service life. No credible published independent failure-rate figure or controlled long-term service-life test is established by the available sources.
DuroMax’s OEM engine range includes single-cylinder and V-twin four-stroke models positioned for equipment such as tillers, cultivators, pumps, trowels and jetters. That range is manufacturer product positioning, not independent confirmation that every engine suits every duty cycle. DuroMax’s OEM engine listings show the types of applications and configurations offered.

What the XP7HP specifications tell you
The XP7HP is one example of why comparing the specific engine matters more than relying on the brand name. DuroMax lists it as a 208cc, four-stroke OHV gasoline engine with a horizontal shaft, recoil start, 3/4-inch shaft diameter and cast-iron sleeve. The product page also gives shaft length and keyway dimensions and links to parts and technical service. See DuroMax’s XP7HP specifications.
Those published details are a starting point, not a guarantee of a drop-in replacement. Before buying, match the engine to the equipment’s shaft dimensions, mounting pattern, shaft-center height, rotation, load and emissions requirements. Confirm that the output and start configuration suit the job, too.

What customer ratings can—and cannot—show
Lowe’s displayed a 4.5-out-of-5 rating for the XP7HP from 18 reviews when accessed in 2026; it notes that ratings may include incentivized reviews. That small retailer snapshot can offer customer context, but it cannot predict long-term durability across all engines. Lowe’s XP7HP listing carries the rating and its qualification.
SlashGear also reported marketplace ratings for a 500cc XP20HP engine and an XP13000EH generator that uses the same engine. These are article-reported marketplace snapshots, not audited current ratings or controlled durability evidence. Neither set of ratings establishes how long an engine will last or how often it will fail. SlashGear’s report describes those figures.

How to assess a DuroMax engine before buying
Compare the candidate engine with the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and with any genuine alternatives. Work through the fit and ownership details before using price or star ratings as a deciding factor:
- Output and displacement: Check that the engine is rated for the task and load, rather than choosing by displacement alone.
- Physical fit: Verify shaft diameter and length, keyway, rotation, mounting pattern and shaft-center height against the equipment.
- Configuration: Confirm fuel type and whether recoil or electric start is required. Do not assume features from one DuroMax model carry over to another.
- Emissions: Check which emissions certification the equipment and engine must meet where you live.
- Serviceability: Look into parts availability, technical support and access to service in your area.
- Evidence quality: Give more weight to model-specific, long-term ownership evidence than to headline marketplace ratings, which may be small, self-selected or incentivized.
What warranty does DuroMax offer?
DuroMax says most of its products, including engines, carry a three-year residential warranty and a one-year commercial warranty. The company notes that selected product lines have different terms. Its small off-road engine warranty text also describes a two-year emissions-control warranty. Coverage can depend on maintenance and excludes issues associated with abuse, neglect, improper maintenance or unapproved modifications. Check the exact engine’s warranty and manual for applicable terms rather than assuming that every model has identical coverage. DuroMax’s warranty page explains the general terms and exceptions.
