Mazda says it is considering development of the next-generation MX-5, considering a 1,000–1,200 kg weight target, and exploring powertrain possibilities. Those are work in progress—not confirmation of a production car’s final weight, engine, electrification, transmission, or arrival date.
What has Mazda confirmed about the next Miata?
In a statement provided by Mazda North American Operations and reproduced by MotorTrend on August 3, 2026, Mazda said:
“We are currently considering the development of the next-generation MX-5. It is true that we are considering a weight target (between 1,000 kg and 1,200 kg) to realize the “Jinba ittai” driving experience that is the MX-5’s appeal. Regarding the powertrain, we are also exploring various possibilities while considering regulations and other factors.”
The verbs are important. Mazda is considering development, considering a weight target, and exploring powertrain possibilities. The statement does not announce a finalized development or production plan.

Is the next Miata’s weight confirmed?
No. The 1,000–1,200 kg range is a target Mazda says it is considering, not a certified curb weight or a promise about the finished car. Mazda links that target to its aim of retaining the MX-5’s Jinba Ittai driving experience; it does not state that a future production model will fall within the range.
Will the fifth-generation Miata be electric or hybrid?
Mazda has not confirmed a specific powertrain in the cited statement. “Various possibilities” leaves the choice open; it does not establish a battery-electric Miata, a hybrid, or a combustion-only model. Mazda says regulations and other factors are part of the exploration, but it has not publicly specified the eventual configuration.

MotorTrend’s headline describes the next Miata as “EV-ready,” but that is the publication’s characterization. The Mazda wording it reproduces does not say the car will be electric or EV-ready.
When is the next-generation Miata coming out?
Mazda’s statement gives no launch year, reveal date, or production schedule, so an arrival date is not confirmed by this announcement.

Recent model-year news concerns the current fourth-generation MX-5, not a fifth-generation launch. Mazda North American Operations called the 2026 MX-5 the fourth generation and said the generation debuted for the 2016 model year; its U.S. announcement described targeted interior refinement while preserving the car’s driving character. Mazda Spain’s 2027 model-year announcement said production of that car had begun and European arrival was expected from September 2026. These regional updates are about the existing generation, not evidence of a confirmed successor.

Mazda’s corporate history of the MX-5 says the original concept was a modern compact two-seater, and that Mazda settled on a rear-wheel-drive layout and open-top body. The company says its engineers coined “Jinba Ittai,” meaning “rider and horse as one,” to express the roadster’s intended fun-to-drive character. Mazda says the principle continues to symbolize each MX-5 generation.

- Whether and when Mazda will finalize development of a successor.
