Automatic engine start-stop is not being removed from cars by the EPA’s latest action. On February 12, 2026, the agency finalized a repeal of federal vehicle greenhouse-gas standards and eliminated the off-cycle credit that had applied to start-stop systems. That removes a regulatory incentive for automakers; it does not disable the feature in cars already on the road or require manufacturers to drop it from future models.
What automatic start-stop does
Automatic engine stop-start, also called auto start-stop, shuts the engine off when a vehicle is idling and restarts it when the driver releases the brake. The EPA uses that definition in its 2025 Automotive Trends Report.
Drivers may recognize a start-stop button or indicator in the cabin. The system’s presence, controls and behavior can vary by vehicle; the policy change does not alter how an individual car operates.
What the EPA changed in February 2026
On February 12, 2026, the EPA announced a final action rescinding the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Endangerment Finding and repealing subsequent vehicle greenhouse-gas standards. The agency says the action also eliminated all off-cycle credits associated with that program, including the credit for start-stop technology. The final-rule page says the rule was published February 18, 2026.

The EPA says manufacturers will have no future obligations under the repealed vehicle GHG program for measuring, controlling and reporting greenhouse-gas emissions. That description is limited to the program the agency repealed; it should not be read as a statement about separate vehicle requirements outside that program.
What the change means—and what it doesn’t
- The federal credit is gone. The EPA says the start-stop off-cycle credit, created in 2012, was eliminated as part of the final action.
- Existing vehicles keep their hardware. The action does not order automakers to remove systems from vehicles already built, and it does not switch off the feature in cars on the road.
- Future fitment is not decided by this action alone. Removing the credit removes an incentive within the repealed program; it does not require manufacturers to stop installing start-stop systems.
- The EPA’s assessment is an agency position. The agency says the credit did not deliver measurable real-world benefits. That is the EPA’s policy rationale, not an established independent consensus about the system’s effects.
How common was start-stop?
Start-stop appeared on 58% of new gasoline non-hybrid vehicles in model year 2024, according to the EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report. The agency’s series tracks the technology from model year 2012, when it appeared on fewer than 1% of vehicles in that series. These figures describe the EPA’s reported vehicle categories and years, not every vehicle on the road.

Why the “finally going away” headline needs a date
The prediction came from a SlashGear article published May 12, 2025, after EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced that the agency planned to act. At that point, the details and timing were unclear. The February 2026 final action later removed the credit, but it did not ban the hardware.
In its February 12, 2026 release, the EPA called start-stop “almost universally hated.” That is the agency’s characterization, not the result of a representative driver survey established by the cited material. Zeldin also said, “The Trump EPA is proudly fixing this stupid feature at Trump Speed.” That is the administrator’s political characterization, not a technical finding about emissions, reliability or what drivers think.

Can owners disable start-stop or install an eliminator?
Some vehicles provide a start-stop button, but the available information does not establish a universal control method across makes and models. SlashGear reported aftermarket eliminators for some Ford Bronco and Raptor models; that report does not verify a particular product, its fitment by model year, installation requirements or warranty effects.
Before buying or installing an eliminator, check the manufacturer’s exact year, make and model fitment information and determine what the device changes. Confirm installation requirements and ask the vehicle manufacturer or dealer about any service or warranty implications. Do not assume a module listed for one Bronco or Raptor year fits another.

How to read the EPA’s public-comment figures
The EPA reports that the final-rule process included a 52-day public comment period, four days of virtual hearings with more than 600 testifiers, and about 572,000 comments. Those are agency-reported process counts; they do not show how many drivers dislike start-stop or establish public opinion on the feature.
