“OBS” is enthusiast shorthand for Chevrolet’s GMT400 C/K generation. For standard full-size pickups, the familiar range is 1988–1998; related SUVs and chassis-cab models did not all follow that exact cutoff. Chevrolet’s heritage history describes the 1988 C/K lineup as GMT400 and says it was later nicknamed “OBS.”
What does OBS mean on a truck?
OBS commonly means “Old Body Style,” an enthusiast nickname for the GMT400 generation. Chevrolet’s own heritage history identifies the platform as GMT400 and notes that it was later nicknamed “OBS.” The term is informal; GMT400 is the platform designation.
In Chevrolet’s full-size-truck timeline, GMT400 sits between the earlier Square Body C/K generation and the GMT800 generation that followed. The C/K name itself predates GMT400, so a C/K badge alone does not tell you that a truck is an OBS.
What years are OBS Chevy trucks?
For a standard full-size Chevrolet pickup, use 1988–1998 as the usual OBS range. Chevrolet says the C/K lineup was all-new in 1988, and its truck history places the next generation after this era. The range is not a universal cutoff for every vehicle built on or related to the platform: SUVs and chassis-cab trucks had their own model timelines, and the C3500HD chassis cab is one example of a carryover beyond the pickup changeover. How the GMT400 era fits into Chevy truck history
Chevrolet describes the 1988 C/K as its first all-new design in 15 years. An extended cab joined the lineup, and Silverado remained a top trim designation during this generation. In the following new era, Silverado became the name for all Chevrolet full-size trucks. That shift helps explain why “OBS” is useful shorthand: it separates the older C/K generation from later Silverado-named pickups without making OBS an official model name.
Chevrolet’s historical information kit lists several broad checkpoints for the period. These are year markers, not a guarantee that every trim or configuration received the same equipment:

- 1987: Gasoline V6 and V8 engines received throttle-body injection.
- 1988: The new interior and exterior design arrived.
- 1990: The 454 SS appeared.
- 1992: Suburban, Blazer, and Crew Cab joined the C/K platform.
- 1995: Four-wheel anti-lock brakes and a redesigned interior are listed; Chevrolet also says Tahoe joined its full-size SUV lineup that year.
- 1996: Daytime running lamps, Vortec-series engines, and an extended-cab third door are listed.
These historical-kit details are summarized in the search-result excerpt for Chevrolet’s 1998 information kit; confirm features on the individual truck rather than inferring them from the year alone.
Configurations: C/K, series, cab and bed
What C and K indicate
In the guide’s explanation, C denotes two-wheel drive and K denotes four-wheel drive. Those letters are part of the C/K naming system, not another way to say OBS.

1500, 2500 and 3500 classes
The series numbers are commonly described as 1500 half-ton, 2500 three-quarter-ton, and 3500 one-ton classes. These are simplified class labels; they do not specify a truck’s exact equipment or capability by themselves.
Cab and bed choices
Regular and extended cabs were offered, and the guide identifies 3500 crew-cab configurations beginning in 1992. Bed styles varied too: Fleetside refers to a smooth-sided bed, while Sportside describes a bed with external fender shapes. These names identify bed design, not whether a truck belongs to the OBS generation.

Engines and equipment vary by truck
There is no single engine specification for an OBS. The range included 4.3L V6, 5.0L and 5.7L gasoline V8, 6.2L diesel, and 6.5L diesel options across the years and configurations. The 7.4L 454 high-output engine was used in the limited-production 454 SS from 1990–1993, and the later range included the Vortec 5700. Availability depended on model year and configuration; the list is not a promise that every engine could be ordered in every truck. RealTruck’s guide covers the broad engine range, while Chevrolet’s historical information kit marks the arrival of Vortec-series engines in 1996.

Because the generation label covers many combinations, compare specific trucks by their actual details rather than by “OBS” alone. Record:

Use the door information and VIN/build details to verify the particular vehicle. A generation nickname cannot establish a truck’s exact specification, and visually similar models may be classified differently by parts sellers. The sources cited here distinguish the main configurations but do not establish a reliability ranking or provide a detailed mechanical inspection procedure.
Parts and accessories: match the exact configuration
Owners may consider tonneau covers, seat covers, storage solutions, or brake and performance upgrades. These are category examples, not endorsements of a particular product. For any part, verify the year and relevant configuration; for seat covers, check cab and seat layout as well. “Fits OBS” alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
