The 2024 Nissan Pathfinder is at its best as a quiet, comfortable family SUV with useful three-row seating and a high maximum tow rating. Its drawbacks are just as practical: some reviewers found the ride firm on broken pavement, cargo space less generous than rivals, and handling unremarkable. The Rock Creek trim looks tougher and makes more power, but that does not make it a serious off-roader.
What the 2024 Pathfinder gets right
Quiet, comfortable family travel
Edmunds describes the Pathfinder as reasonably spacious and pleasant to drive, highlighting its quiet ride, roomy seating and towing capacity near the top of the class. Car and Driver likewise praises the spacious, quiet cabin, smooth V6 and comfort-oriented suspension. Those qualities make the Pathfinder a capable pavement-focused family hauler rather than an SUV built around excitement.
The 2024 model carries over from the generation introduced for 2022. Its 3.5-liter V6 is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Car and Driver lists 284 horsepower for most trims and 295 hp for Rock Creek. That conventional automatic powertrain is a change from the prior generation’s CVT arrangement described by the review sources. Flexible three-row seating
A second-row bench allows seating for up to eight; optional captain’s chairs replace that bench and reduce capacity to seven. Car and Driver notes useful cabin storage cubbies, an 8-inch standard infotainment screen and a 9-inch screen on SL and Platinum trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, but equipment varies by trim, so check the actual vehicle’s feature list.

Strong maximum towing capacity
Nissan’s 2024 brochure gives a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, while cautioning that capacity depends on vehicle configuration. Do not assume every Pathfinder can tow that amount: verify the exact trim, drivetrain and equipment against Nissan’s guidance for the vehicle. What I didn’t like
The ride is not always plush
Reviewers do not describe the ride in identical terms. Car and Driver calls it smooth and says the suspension is tuned for comfort; Consumer Reports describes handling as responsive and secure but says the ride is firm, with broken pavement coming through noticeably, particularly at lower speeds. These assessments can coexist: a vehicle can feel composed on a smooth highway yet transmit sharper bumps on rough streets. If ride comfort is a priority, drive the specific Pathfinder over the surfaces you use most.

Ordinary road manners and some front-seat discomfort
Car and Driver calls the Pathfinder’s road manners bland. Edmunds says the front seats can feel somewhat stiff, and that the engine may feel sluggish when quick power is needed. These are review impressions, not guarantees that every driver will experience them the same way.
Cargo space trails some rivals
Edmunds identifies less cargo room than some competing SUVs as a drawback. With three rows, usable space behind the third row is especially relevant: check whether the Pathfinder fits your usual combination of passengers, strollers, luggage or sports gear before deciding. The supplied reviews establish the comparative shortcoming but do not provide a directly comparable cargo-volume figure here.

Rock Creek looks rugged, but capability has limits
Rock Creek gets the higher 295-hp output, compared with 284 hp for most trims, and a more rugged presentation. Car and Driver’s assessment is that its package does not deliver meaningful off-road capability. Treat the trim as a distinct appearance and equipment choice, not as evidence that the Pathfinder is a dedicated off-road SUV.
Fuel economy and equipment vary by configuration
Car and Driver lists EPA combined ratings of 21–23 mpg depending on configuration. Separately, Consumer Reports’ 2024 road-test summary reports 21 mpg overall in its test. That is a publication test result, not a prediction of what every owner will achieve; driving conditions and the specific configuration matter. The Consumer Reports figure is drawn from its road-test summary, so it should not be treated as a universal rating.

Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is available, with drive modes varying by configuration. Car and Driver lists automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and automatic high beams as standard; its review says ProPilot Assist is standard on SV, SL and Platinum. Confirm the equipment on the exact vehicle, especially when comparing trims or shopping used. Car and Driver’s review provides the cited trim and feature details.

Edmunds summarizes mixed owner feedback. Many owners praise space, comfort, ride quality and appearance; some report electronics problems, noises, engine or transmission trouble, mediocre fuel use, or settings they find difficult to control. These are individual reports, not a measured failure rate and not proof that every 2024 Pathfinder has a defect. A particular used vehicle’s condition, maintenance history, mileage, trim and equipment matter more than a handful of anecdotes.

Check recalls by VIN before buying used
Edmunds’ model page lists two recalls and identifies recall 24V176000 as involving a seat-belt pretensioner. A model-page count cannot establish whether a specific vehicle has an open recall or whether a repair was completed. Look up the vehicle identification number through NHTSA’s recall lookup or ask a Nissan dealer to check it before purchase.
How to decide whether it suits your family
The Pathfinder is most compelling if you want a quiet three-row SUV, need the option of eight seats, and value a high manufacturer-stated maximum tow rating. Its compromises matter more if you regularly drive broken pavement, need generous room behind the third row, expect eager acceleration, or want genuine off-road ability.
- Test the front seats and ride over rough pavement, not only on a smooth test route.
- Bring the people and cargo you need to carry, and check the third-row space in your normal seating configuration.
- Compare the exact drivetrain and trim for fuel economy, safety features and towing capacity; do not apply the 6,000-pound maximum to every configuration.
- Compare the price of the trim with the equipment you actually want, since Car and Driver notes that upper trims can be expensive relative to competitors.
- For a used example, check its VIN for recalls and review its maintenance and service history.
Nissan’s 2024 Pathfinder owner’s manual states, “This vehicle should not be modified.” It also cautions that modifications could affect performance, safety, emissions or durability and could affect warranty coverage. The 2024 Pathfinder owner’s manual is the source for that guidance.
