Toyota’s company history places the Tundra’s start in 2000 and records that production began at the San Antonio plant in 2006. It also notes that the 2008 Tundra was introduced in 2007. Toyota explicitly identifies the 2022 truck as the third generation in its 2022 launch announcement.
First generation: 2000–2006
The first-generation Tundra established Toyota’s full-size pickup in the U.S. market. The official material cited here supports this broad date range, but not a reliable year-by-year account of its engines, outputs, cab choices, or trim changes. Those details are best checked against the specific model year rather than inferred from the generation label.
Second generation: model years 2007–2021
Toyota introduced the second generation in 2007 as a 2008 model. The company’s history also places San Antonio production’s start in 2006, ahead of that launch. This generation continued through model year 2021, but it was not visually or mechanically unchanged throughout its run.

2014: a major redesign, not a new generation
For model year 2014, Toyota called the Tundra redesigned inside and out and described it as the first major change since the generation launched for model year 2007. The stated goals included a more chiseled exterior, a more refined interior, improved ergonomics, and technology that was easier to use. Toyota’s 2014 announcement lists Regular Cab, Double Cab, and CrewMax styles, with 4×2 and 4×4 availability for that release; those are specific to the 2014 model-year announcement, not a specification for every Tundra.
The distinction matters when tracking body-style changes: 2014 brought a substantial redesign within the second generation, while the next generation boundary came with the 2022 redesign.

Third generation: model year 2022 onward
Toyota described the 2022 Tundra as redesigned from the ground up. Its changes reached beyond appearance, replacing the prior generation’s powertrain approach and revising the truck’s underlying structure and rear suspension.
New twin-turbo V6 powertrains, with an available hybrid
For the 2022 launch, Toyota specified a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic. The standard i-FORCE version was rated by Toyota at up to 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The available i-FORCE MAX hybrid system was rated at up to 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft, also with the 10-speed automatic. These are Toyota’s launch specifications, not figures that should be applied automatically to later model years or every configuration.

Revised frame, bed, and rear suspension
Toyota’s 2022 launch materials describe a high-strength boxed steel ladder frame, an aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and a fully redesigned multi-link rear suspension. Together, these changes mark the third generation as a structural redesign as well as a powertrain change. Toyota also highlighted an available 14-inch touchscreen and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 in its launch announcement; availability and equipment depend on the model and configuration.
2022 launch towing and payload figures
Toyota stated maximum figures of up to 12,000 pounds of towing and up to 1,940 pounds of payload for the 2022 Tundra at launch. These are manufacturer-published model-year maxima, not ratings for every truck; actual ratings depend on configuration. Check the rating for the specific cab, drivetrain, trim, and equipment before towing or hauling.

What changed most from one generation to the next?
- 2007 model-year launch: the first major boundary after the original 2000–2006 period, beginning the second generation.
- 2014 redesign: a significant inside-and-out refresh of the second generation, focused in Toyota’s description on exterior design, cabin refinement, ergonomics, and easier-to-use technology.
- 2022 redesign: a new generation with twin-turbo V6 powertrains, an available hybrid, a new boxed frame and composite bed, and multi-link rear suspension.
For capability comparisons, use the model year and truck configuration rather than treating one generation’s maximum as universal. Toyota’s 2022 towing and payload figures are launch maxima; the cited materials do not establish a directly comparable set of predecessor ratings by configuration.
What Toyota says it learned from a million-mile Tundra
Toyota says chief engineer Mike Sweers examined Victor Sheppard’s 2007 Tundra after its odometer reached one million miles, and that observations from the truck informed design and material thinking for the next-generation model. The company’s account notes that this was one owner’s experience and may not be representative; it is an engineering anecdote, not evidence of a typical lifespan or a reliability rate. Toyota also attributed a 17.6% increase in maximum towing over the previous generation to Sweers’s explanation, but that comparison should not be extended beyond the manufacturer’s stated context. How to read later model-year changes
A generation timeline is not a complete list of annual equipment or styling updates. Toyota’s 2023 showcase, for example, describes a new SX Package as a model-year addition, but it does not establish every change in later years. For a specific truck, consult the official information for that model year and configuration rather than assuming that a feature introduced in 2022—or listed for 2023—remained unchanged or available across the range.
