What the ranking means for each SUV
1. Crosstrek: strongest current evidence
The Crosstrek is the clearest choice if reliability forecast is your primary comparison point: CR expects it to outperform the average new car. CR also says the similar Crosstrek ranks third among Subaru models overall. The Impreza ranks ahead of it, but the Impreza is a car, not an SUV, so it is not part of this ranking. 2. Forester Hybrid: a distinct, slightly stronger forecast
CR places the Forester Hybrid just above average, a better category than the gas Forester’s average result. Subaru’s page summarizing CR’s 2026 recommendations identifies the Forester Hybrid as a Top Compact SUV, but that recognition reflects more than reliability alone and should not be read as a reliability award. 3 (tie). Gas Forester, Outback, and Ascent: around average
CR’s evidence puts all three in the average neighborhood. The Ascent is lowest relative to other Subaru models in the annual comparison, but “lowest in the lineup” does not mean below average reliability. The evidence does not support a more exact ordering among these three SUVs.
How Consumer Reports arrives at a reliability forecast
Consumer Reports’ 2026 reliability pages describe a survey covering about 380,000 vehicles and track owner-reported problems across 20 potential trouble spots, including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical accessories, and in-car electronics. These reports are based on members’ accounts of vehicle history; a predicted-reliability category estimates how a model may hold up, not whether a particular example will be trouble-free. CR’s published methodology says it typically uses the model’s most recent three years of survey data when a vehicle has not been significantly changed. For new or redesigned vehicles, or when responses are limited, it may rely on brand history and similar models instead. That distinction matters for the Outback forecast, which draws on brand history and the previous generation, and the gas Forester forecast, which uses 2025-model data. How to use the ranking when choosing a Subaru
- Compare the exact powertrain. The Forester Hybrid’s result is just above average; the gas Forester’s is average. One forecast does not establish the other’s reliability.
- Account for model-year history. A forecast built partly from earlier models or brand history has less direct evidence about the current vehicle than a forecast supported by recent examples of that model.
- Match the vehicle to your needs as well as its forecast. The Ascent is a three-row SUV, while the other models serve different size and configuration needs. This reliability evidence does not compare safety, fuel economy, purchase price, or ownership costs.
- Do not mistake overall awards for reliability rankings. CR’s overall scores and Top Picks consider additional factors, including road tests, owner satisfaction, safety-system availability, and crash-test results where available.
