The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid and 2026 Outback are important exceptions: both are assembled in Japan. Historically, Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana, has also built the Legacy, Outback, Impreza, Baja, and Tribeca.
That is the precise answer if made in the USA means final-assembled in the United States. It does not mean that every part, engine, or transmission was manufactured domestically. The vehicle-specific American Automobile Labeling Act label is the best way to verify the origin of an individual Subaru.
Where Subaru builds vehicles in the USA
Subaru’s U.S. assembly operation is Subaru of Indiana Automotive, commonly called SIA. The plant is in Lafayette, Indiana, and is Subaru’s vehicle-assembly site outside Japan. It is the source of the American-built Subarus sold in the United States.
Subaru itself remains a Japanese automaker. Operating a large factory in Indiana does not change the company’s corporate nationality; it means that certain vehicles are assembled in America for the North American market.

Current 2026 Subaru models assembled in the USA
The table below applies to the 2026 U.S. model year. Production arrangements can differ for other countries, model years, trims, and powertrains.
| 2026 model | U.S.-assembled? | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Ascent | Yes | Every 2026 Ascent is built at SIA in Lafayette, Indiana. |
| Forester gasoline | Yes | U.S.-market gasoline Forester vehicles are assembled at Lafayette. |
| Forester Hybrid | Yes | The 2026 Forester Hybrid is also assembled at Lafayette. |
| Crosstrek gasoline | Yes, selected versions | Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness gasoline trims are U.S.-assembled. |
| Crosstrek Hybrid | No | Assembled in Gunma, Japan. |
| Outback | No | The redesigned 2026 Outback is assembled in Gunma, Japan. |
| Impreza | No | 2026 federal labeling data lists Japanese final assembly. |
| BRZ | No | Japanese final assembly. |
| Solterra | No | Japanese final assembly. |
| Uncharted | No | Japanese final assembly. |
Subaru’s own vehicle information identifies the 2026 Ascent as built in Lafayette. Subaru’s 2026 model material also identifies the Forester gasoline and hybrid versions as Lafayette-assembled, while the 2026 Crosstrek information distinguishes the U.S.-assembled gasoline versions from the Japan-built Hybrid. The federal model-year data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides a second useful check.
The 2026 Crosstrek is split by powertrain
It is not accurate to answer simply that the 2026 Crosstrek is made in America. The gasoline Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness versions are assembled in Indiana. The Crosstrek Hybrid is assembled in Japan.

That distinction matters when comparing vehicles on a dealer lot. Two cars carrying the Crosstrek name can have different final-assembly countries even when they are the same model year.
Every Subaru nameplate ever final-assembled at SIA
Eight Subaru nameplates have been assembled at the Lafayette plant at some point:
- Legacy
- Outback
- Impreza
- Ascent
- Crosstrek
- Forester
- Baja
- Tribeca
Five of those are former SIA Subaru products. The Ascent, Forester, and selected gasoline Crosstrek versions are the current 2026 production lines.
1. Subaru Legacy — 1989 to 2025
The Legacy was the first Subaru model manufactured outside Japan. SIA began Legacy production on September 11, 1989, making it the original Subaru product built at Lafayette.
Indiana-built Legacy vehicles included sedan and wagon generations, although North American production later focused on the sedan. The Legacy wagon is also central to the history of the Outback: the original Outback began as a raised, more rugged version of the Legacy wagon before becoming a separate North American model line.
The Legacy continued through seven North American generations and was discontinued after the 2025 model year. The final Legacy reportedly left the Lafayette line on September 12, 2025. That date is reported by industry coverage citing SIA production information, rather than by an easily accessible Subaru corporate announcement, so it is best treated as a reported final-production date.
ASSEMBLY Magazine’s report on the final Legacy provides the production-date account, while SIA’s history identifies the Legacy as its first Subaru product.
2. Subaru Outback — approximately 1995 to early October 2025 at SIA
Subaru’s historical material identifies U.S. Outback production as beginning in 1995. What started as a raised Legacy wagon developed into one of Subaru’s most important model lines.

For the 2025 model year, all U.S.-market Outback trims were assembled at SIA in Lafayette. Production ended at the Indiana plant in early October 2025, according to SIA and industry coverage, as the factory made room for Forester production.
The redesigned 2026 Outback is assembled in Gunma, Japan. This is the most important year-to-year correction for anyone using an older article or shopping leftover inventory:
- 2025 Outback: U.S.-assembled at Lafayette.
- 2026 Outback: Japanese final assembly.
A 2025 Outback bought during calendar year 2026 can still be an Indiana-built vehicle. Conversely, a 2026 Outback is not U.S.-assembled even if it is purchased from an American dealer.
Subaru’s where-is-Subaru-made information and its announcement identifying the 2026 Outback’s Gunma, Japan assembly document the change.
3. Subaru Impreza — late 2016 to May 2023 at SIA
SIA began producing the Impreza in late 2016. The change followed the end of Toyota Camry production at the plant and a reconfiguration that allowed Subaru to add more production capacity.
Impreza production in Indiana ended in May 2023, when that capacity shifted to the Crosstrek. This creates a common research mistake: older articles correctly list the Impreza as American-built, but that description applies only to the late-2016-through-May-2023 production period. The 2026 Impreza is listed with Japanese final assembly.
4. Subaru Ascent — May 2018 to present
The Ascent joined the SIA production mix in May 2018 and remains the simplest current answer for buyers seeking an American-assembled Subaru.
For 2026, Subaru states that every Ascent is built at the Lafayette facility. There is no advertised trim-level or powertrain split comparable to the Crosstrek exception. The Ascent is therefore a clear U.S.-assembly choice if the buyer wants Subaru’s three-row SUV.
Being built in Indiana does not mean that every major component is American-made. The 2026 AALA data lists Japan for the Ascent’s engine and transmission origin and reports 45% U.S./Canadian parts content by the federal labeling method.
5. Subaru Crosstrek — selected versions from May 2023 to present
SIA began producing the Crosstrek in May 2023, replacing the Impreza on the relevant production line. The plant’s history page says production began with the 2.5-liter Sport, Limited, and Wilderness versions.
For the 2026 U.S. model year, the gasoline Crosstrek trims assembled at Lafayette are:
- Base
- Premium
- Sport
- Limited
- Wilderness
The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is not part of that Indiana production run; it is assembled in Japan. The correct answer must therefore include both the trim and powertrain, not just the model name.

6. Subaru Forester — from fall 2025 to present
For U.S.-bound vehicles, Subaru transferred Forester production from Gunma, Japan, to SIA as part of a broader production reorganization. Subaru’s 2025 integrated report planned the move for around fall 2025, while U.S.-bound Outback production moved in the opposite direction to Japan.
The result is that the U.S.-market 2026 Forester gasoline and hybrid models are assembled at Lafayette. This is a production arrangement for U.S.-market vehicles; it should not be generalized to every Forester sold worldwide.
The Forester is another reason older country-of-assembly guides need updating. Historically, a U.S. buyer would generally associate the Forester with Japanese production. For the 2026 U.S. model year, the applicable gasoline and hybrid Foresters are Indiana-assembled.
7. Subaru Baja — 2002 to 2006
The Baja was Subaru’s pickup-style utility vehicle and was produced at SIA from 2002 through 2006. It belongs on the list because it was a Subaru nameplate, not merely a trim or an unrelated vehicle produced for another manufacturer.

8. Subaru Tribeca — 2005 to 2014
The Tribeca, initially sold as the B9 Tribeca, began production at SIA in 2005 and remained there until 2014. The B9 designation was later dropped, but B9 Tribeca and Tribeca refer to one nameplate for purposes of this production history.
The 2025–2026 Subaru factory transition explained
Several changes occurred close together, which is why search results and dealer articles can appear to contradict one another:
- Legacy production ended. The nameplate was discontinued after the 2025 model year, with the final Indiana-built example reported in September 2025.
- Outback production moved to Japan. Indiana production ended in early October 2025, and the redesigned 2026 Outback is assembled in Gunma.
- Forester production moved to Indiana. U.S.-bound 2026 gasoline and hybrid Foresters are assembled at SIA.
- Crosstrek production continued at SIA. The gasoline versions remain Indiana-built, while the Hybrid remains Japanese-built.
- Impreza production had already ended at SIA. Its Indiana production ran from late 2016 through May 2023 before the capacity shifted to Crosstrek.
In practical terms, the factory did not simply gain or lose a model. Subaru reorganized which products were built for the U.S. market at each plant.
Does an American-assembled Subaru have mostly American parts?
No—not necessarily. Final assembly and parts origin are separate facts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe federal AALA label separates:
- U.S./Canadian parts content;
- major foreign parts sources;
- the final assembly country;
- the engine’s country of origin; and
- the transmission’s country of origin.
For the 2026 model year, NHTSA’s AALA data reports the following:
| Model | U.S./Canadian parts content | Final assembly | Engine/transmission origin shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forester | 50% | United States | Japan / Japan |
| Ascent | 45% | United States | Japan / Japan |
| Crosstrek gasoline | 45% | United States | Japan / Japan |
| Impreza | 5% | Japan | Japan / Japan |
| Crosstrek Hybrid | 0% | Japan | Japan / Japan |
| Outback | 0% | Japan | Japan / Japan |
| BRZ | 0% | Japan | Japan / Japan |
| Solterra | 0% | Japan | Japan / Japan |
| Uncharted | 0% | Japan | Japan / Japan |
These percentages are model-year or carline-level figures, not a guarantee that every individual vehicle has an identical parts mix. Also, NHTSA explains that parts-content percentages do not include final assembly, distribution, or other non-parts costs. Thus, a Forester can be final-assembled in Indiana while its engine and transmission are listed as Japanese in the same federal data.
The relevant distinction is:
- Final assembly: where the vehicle was put together as a completed vehicle.
- Parts content: the reported share of parts from the United States and Canada.
- Component origin: where major components such as the engine and transmission originated.
How to verify the origin of a specific Subaru
A model-level table is a useful starting point, but the label on the actual vehicle is the most practical answer when production is split by model year, trim, or powertrain.
1. Find the vehicle’s original AALA or Monroney label
The federal American Automobile Labeling Act label normally identifies the vehicle’s:

- major foreign parts sources;
- engine origin; and
- transmission origin.
Look for wording such as FINAL ASSEMBLY POINT: Lafayette, IN. If it says Lafayette, the vehicle was final-assembled at SIA. If it says Japan, the vehicle was final-assembled in Japan.
NHTSA’s AALA guidance explains the labeling requirements. NHTSA also distinguishes the final assembly point of an individual vehicle from parts-content information that is generally reported by carline and model year.
2. Use the complete VIN as a cross-check
Obtain the complete 17-character VIN and compare it with the label and vehicle records. Older Subaru and NHTSA VIN documentation identifies:
- 4S3 as an SIA-assembled passenger car; and
- 4S4 as an SIA-assembled multipurpose vehicle.
Do not treat those prefixes—or the first character of the VIN alone—as conclusive for every model year. VIN conventions can vary, and NHTSA has cautioned that a manufacturer’s World Manufacturer Identifier does not always independently establish the physical location where a vehicle was assembled.

3. Check the model year, trim, and powertrain
These details can change the answer:
- A 2025 Outback can be U.S.-assembled; a 2026 Outback is Japanese-assembled.
- A 2026 gasoline Crosstrek in the Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, or Wilderness trim can be U.S.-assembled.
- A 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is Japanese-assembled.
- A 2026 Forester gasoline or hybrid is U.S.-assembled for the U.S. market.
4. Be careful with leftover inventory
Purchase date is not assembly date. A 2025 Outback purchased in 2026 may still show Lafayette as its final assembly point. A 2026 Outback purchased in 2026 will show Japan. The dealer’s location, registration state, or delivery state does not establish where the vehicle was built.
5. Resolve dealer-listing conflicts
If a dealer listing, online specification page, and vehicle label disagree, ask the dealer for the original window sticker or a VIN-specific reprint. Confirm that the VIN on the document matches the VIN on the vehicle. For country-of-assembly purposes, the vehicle-specific federal label is more useful than a generic model webpage.

Does assembly location predict quality?
Not by itself. Indiana assembly versus Japanese assembly is a traceability fact, not reliable evidence that one vehicle is inherently better, worse, safer, or more reliable. A meaningful comparison should use independent reliability, safety, warranty, and ownership data rather than assuming that a factory’s country determines the result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is every Subaru made in Japan?
No. Subaru is a Japanese automaker, but its Lafayette, Indiana, plant final-assembles the 2026 Ascent, Forester gasoline and hybrid models, and selected gasoline Crosstrek trims. Other 2026 Subaru models are listed with Japanese final assembly.
Is every 2026 Ascent made in America?
For the U.S. market, Subaru states that every 2026 Ascent is built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana.
Is the 2026 Outback made in America?
No. The 2026 Outback is assembled in Gunma, Japan. The 2025 Outback was assembled at Lafayette, so model year—not the year you buy the vehicle—is the key distinction.
Which 2026 Crosstrek trims are made in the USA?
The 2026 gasoline Crosstrek Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trims are assembled in Indiana. The 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid is assembled in Japan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs the 2026 Forester now made in America?
Yes, for U.S.-market vehicles. Both the 2026 gasoline Forester and Forester Hybrid are assembled at SIA in Lafayette. Foresters sold in other markets can follow different production arrangements.
Was the Impreza ever made in America?
Yes. SIA built the Impreza from late 2016 through May 2023. The 2026 Impreza is listed with Japanese final assembly, so older articles describing the Impreza as U.S.-built are referring to that earlier production period.
Are American-built Subarus made entirely from American parts?
No. The 2026 AALA data reports 50% U.S./Canadian parts content for the Forester, 45% for the Ascent, and 45% for the gasoline Crosstrek. It lists Japan as the engine and transmission origin for those U.S.-assembled models. AALA percentages also exclude final assembly and certain other costs.
Does a Subaru VIN beginning with 4S mean it was built in America?
Not conclusively by itself. Older documentation associates 4S3 with SIA-assembled passenger cars and 4S4 with SIA-assembled multipurpose vehicles, but VIN conventions can vary by model year. Confirm the complete VIN against the vehicle’s AALA or original window sticker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which Subaru models have ever been built in Indiana?
Eight Subaru nameplates have been final-assembled at SIA: Legacy, Outback, Impreza, Ascent, Crosstrek, Forester, Baja, and Tribeca.
Is an American-built Subaru better than a Japanese-built Subaru?
Assembly location alone does not establish quality, reliability, safety, or durability. Treat it as an origin fact and use independent vehicle data for quality comparisons.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: In the 2026 U.S. lineup, choose the Ascent, either 2026 Forester powertrain, or a gasoline Crosstrek in the Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, or Wilderness trim if you want a Subaru final-assembled in America. Do not assume the Crosstrek Hybrid or 2026 Outback is U.S.-built, and do not confuse Indiana assembly with entirely American parts. For any specific vehicle—especially a 2025/2026 crossover—verify the final assembly point on its original AALA or window-sticker label.
