What are all the special-edition Honda Pilots? The useful answer depends on the model year. Honda has used “Special Edition” (SE) as both an equipment package and a standalone trim, while Black Edition and TrailSport are separate named trims with different goals. A 2008 SE is not the same vehicle as a 2021 SE, and neither should be evaluated by the equipment of a 2022 SE.
The history below covers the U.S. model-year milestones documented in Honda’s official Pilot timeline, specifications and feature guides. It is not a worldwide inventory of every regional package, dealer-installed bundle or private-market label.

Honda Pilot special editions at a glance
Honda’s documented timeline identifies three different uses of the SE name: an enhanced EX for 2008, a feature-rich 2015 version, and a distinct trim in the 2021 lineup. Honda also introduced Black Edition for 2020 and added Sport and TrailSport for 2022. Those names describe different design priorities, so the badge alone cannot tell you a used Pilot’s equipment.

Honda’s timeline also records the exact description “Two new trim levels debuted: Sport and TrailSport” for 2022. Sport is a regular trim name in that lineup; it is not another SE package.

2008: the original documented Pilot SE
Honda’s Pilot timeline lists the 2008 Special Edition as an enhanced EX. That wording matters because it describes the SE as an EX-derived package, not as a permanent trim level with a specification that carried forward into later generations.
When inspecting a 2008 vehicle, treat the SE badge as a model-year clue rather than a promise of modern convenience or off-road equipment. Confirm the vehicle identification number, the original window sticker or a 2008 Honda equipment guide, and the actual installed features. A seller’s use of “special edition” may describe a package, an appearance treatment or simply a marketing description.
2015: a feature-rich Special Edition with different priorities
Honda describes the 2015 Pilot Special Edition as adding styling, technology and convenience equipment. The documented features are aluminum-alloy wheels, a one-touch-open power moonroof, SiriusXM satellite radio and a DVD rear-entertainment system.

This SE should not be treated as the equipment template for the later 2021 or 2022 versions. Its documented emphasis is family comfort and in-cabin technology, whereas later names use SE for a different trim strategy and TrailSport for a rugged theme. Check that the moonroof, entertainment hardware and other advertised equipment are actually present on the particular 2015 vehicle.
2020: Black Edition arrives as a separate name
Honda added Black Edition for the 2020 model year and described it as having exclusive exterior and interior styling enhancements. Black Edition is therefore not a renamed Special Edition and should not be counted as an SE package.

The name signals an appearance treatment. It does not, by itself, establish a particular drivetrain, seating layout or capability specification. Verify those items in the 2020 model-year guide and on the individual vehicle rather than inferring them from the black-themed badge or trim description.
2021: Special Edition becomes its own trim
Honda’s 2021 specifications list seven Pilot versions: LX, EX, EX-L, Special Edition, Touring, Elite and Black Edition. In that table, Special Edition sits between EX-L and Touring, while Black Edition remains a separate trim.

Use the 2021 specification sheet for seats, drivetrain, standard technology and safety equipment, then compare the exact vehicle’s build sheet before buying.
2022: SE is an EX-L upgrade and TrailSport debuts
What the 2022 Special Edition adds
For 2022, Honda positioned Special Edition as an upgrade to EX-L. The official feature guide lists gloss-black 20-inch wheels, black roof rails, a hands-free-access power liftgate, wireless phone charging and an SE badge. Those are the documented reasons to choose the SE over the underlying EX-L presentation.
Because these features are model-year specific, do not assume that a 2021 SE has the same wheels, roof rails or liftgate operation. Likewise, a 2022 vehicle advertised as “SE-style” may be an EX-L with aftermarket wheels or badges. Inspect the factory equipment and service history.

What the first TrailSport adds
Honda identifies Sport and TrailSport as new trims for 2022. The early TrailSport builds on the Special Edition equipment list and adds i-VTM4 all-wheel drive, 18-inch gloss-black wheels and a 0.6-inch (15-mm) taller ride height relative to its listed baseline. Honda’s timeline characterizes this first TrailSport as a rugged-styling package with lifted suspension, 18-inch black wheels and rugged-design tire sidewalls.
That description belongs to the 2022 configuration. It should not be used to characterize every later TrailSport, especially the redesigned 2023-generation model. If ground clearance, tire type or all-wheel drive matters to you, verify the model year and the official feature guide instead of relying on a TrailSport emblem.
2023 and later: do not merge early and redesigned TrailSport equipment
The official timeline specifically separates the first 2022 TrailSport from the more substantial equipment described for the redesigned 2023-generation TrailSport. The name continues, but the generation changes the vehicle’s hardware and intended use.
For a used Pilot, record the generation and model year before comparing prices or capability. A 2022 TrailSport’s documented 0.6-inch (15-mm) increase is not a universal TrailSport specification, and a 2025 TrailSport’s all-terrain tires and increased ground clearance should not be retroactively assigned to earlier vehicles.
2025 lineup: Black Edition and TrailSport take different paths
Honda’s 2025 Pilot lineup lists Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring, Elite and Black Edition. The 2025 Black Edition adds black exterior styling elements and black leather-trimmed seats with red details to the Elite. That is an appearance-and-interior distinction, not evidence of additional off-road hardware.

The 2025 TrailSport feature list includes all-terrain tires and increased ground clearance. Those features align the trim with rough-surface use more directly than the Black Edition’s styling changes. Still, the exact equipment, seating and drivetrain should be checked against the vehicle’s 2025 documentation.

Honda’s 2025 specifications list the same 3,471 cc V6, 285 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque across these trims. Those figures are model-year specifications, not a claim that every earlier Pilot SE or TrailSport has the same output. Honda’s 2021 model-year material for the 2022 Pilot lists 3,471 cc, 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft across that lineup, illustrating how output can change while the engine displacement and trim names remain familiar.

1. Start with the model year and generation
Write down the model year, generation and VIN before comparing equipment. “SE” alone is not a sufficient identifier because Honda used it for an enhanced EX in 2008, a feature-focused 2015 version, a standalone 2021 trim and an EX-L upgrade in 2022.
2. Identify the base trim
Ask what the special version is built from. The 2008 SE enhanced EX; the 2022 SE upgraded EX-L; and the 2021 SE appeared as its own line between EX-L and Touring. The base trim determines which standard features and configurations are already included.

Black Edition is primarily an exterior-and-interior styling treatment in the cited Honda descriptions. TrailSport adds rugged equipment, but the details vary by generation and year. Compare wheels, tires, suspension, ground clearance and all-wheel-drive status directly rather than treating either badge as a universal specification.

4. Verify seats and drivetrain
Seating capacity, all-wheel-drive status and configuration can affect usefulness and value. Obtain the exact model-year guide or window sticker and confirm the vehicle in person. Do not infer these items from an SE, Black Edition or TrailSport emblem.
5. Inspect factory equipment and condition
Look for the documented wheels, roof rails, liftgate controls, wireless charging pad, moonroof, entertainment hardware or all-terrain tires that should be present for the claimed year. Check that modifications have not replaced factory parts, and ask for service records when a feature is electrically operated.
Common mistakes when shopping for a Pilot special edition
- Assuming SE is one continuous package: Honda changed the meaning and position of the name across model years.
- Calling every dark-colored Pilot a Black Edition: Black Edition is a named trim with documented styling changes; paint color alone proves nothing.
- Applying 2025 TrailSport equipment to 2022: the redesigned generation has a different equipment story.
- Using badge-based listings as specifications: aftermarket wheels, tires, roof rails and badges can make an EX-L resemble an SE or a non-TrailSport resemble a TrailSport.
- Promising a worldwide “complete” list: the cited Honda materials cover selected U.S. model years, not every regional package or dealer bundle.
Owner note: fit accessories by year and trim
Honda lists all-season floor mats as standard on the 2022 TrailSport. If you replace them with aftermarket mats, verify year and trim fitment before ordering; floor contours and retention points can differ even when two Pilots share a badge family.

There is no single, permanent “Special Edition Honda Pilot.” The documented sequence is an enhanced EX in 2008, a technology-and-convenience-focused 2015 version, a standalone SE in 2021 and an EX-L-based SE in 2022. Black Edition, introduced for 2020, is a separate styling trim, while TrailSport begins in 2022 and evolves with the generation. Match the badge to the model year, base trim, drivetrain and factory equipment before deciding what a particular Pilot is worth.
