Mercedes-AMG has made six completed Black Series models, from the SLK 55 AMG Coupé Black Series in 2006 to the AMG GT Black Series announced in 2020. Each took a different AMG platform and sharpened it with a distinct mix of motorsport influence, chassis work and performance-focused design. In March 2026, Mercedes-Benz announced another GT Black Series in development; it is a future model, not a seventh completed car.
What makes an AMG a Black Series?
Mercedes-AMG describes Black Series cars as the performance limit of their model lines, bringing motorsport technology to road-legal vehicles. The recipe was not identical from car to car: some were shaped by AMG safety-car projects, while others drew more directly on racing hardware or AMG’s lightweight strategy.
Ralf Sporr, whom Mercedes-AMG identifies as responsible for its historic vehicle fleet, summed up the badge this way: “In my opinion, Black Series models are always the flagship vehicles or a particularly sporty version of an AMG model range.” Mercedes-AMG’s Black Series history and interview sets out the company’s account of how the idea developed.
All six completed AMG Black Series models
| Year | Model | Platform or motorsport link | Signature focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2006 | SLK 55 AMG Coupé Black Series | Grew from an SLK safety-car concept | Fixed hardtop, chassis changes and more powerful brakes |
| 2007 | CLK 63 AMG Coupé Black Series | Followed the CLK safety car | Track handling and distinctive appearance |
| 2008 | SL 65 AMG Coupé Black Series | AMG flagship coupe | High speed and acceleration; manufacturer-quoted top speed of 320 km/h |
| 2011 | C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series | Motorsport technology applied to a road-legal car | Wide, low stance |
| 2012 | SLS AMG Coupé Black Series | Connected to the SLS AMG GT3 | AMG Lightweight Performance strategy |
| 2020 announcement | Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series | Design and technical inspiration from the AMG GT3 | Flat-crank V8 biturbo and active aerodynamics |
The first five dates follow the official AMG history; 2020 is the announcement date for the GT Black Series, based on Mercedes-Benz Media’s announcement. Announcement, production and model-year dates are not interchangeable, so the GT entry is identified specifically by its announcement chronology.

2006: SLK 55 AMG Coupé Black Series
The first Black Series grew out of the SLK safety-car concept. AMG says the transformation from roadster concept to coupé involved a fixed hardtop, chassis changes and more powerful brakes. It established the core idea of taking an existing AMG and making its character more focused rather than simply adding a badge.
2007: CLK 63 AMG Coupé Black Series
The second model followed the CLK safety car. AMG’s history emphasizes its track handling and distinctive appearance, carrying the Black Series treatment to a larger coupé platform.

2011: C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series
The C 63 Black Series made its intent visible in its wide, low stance. AMG presents it as a road-legal expression of transferring motorsport technology to a production car, continuing the series’ mix of visual distinction and performance focus.

Mercedes-Benz Media’s safety-car chronology says the GT Black Series served as the Official FIA Formula One Safety Car from 2022 through 2026. The event car carried extra equipment and modifications, including lighting and communications gear; it should not be treated as identical to a standard production GT Black Series. The chronology is available from Mercedes-Benz Media’s safety-car history.

Yes, Mercedes-Benz Media announced a further GT Black Series in development on 24 March 2026, alongside a new GT3. That announcement makes it a future model at this point; it does not add a seventh completed car to the historical count above. The six-model list remains the six completed cars through the GT Black Series announced in 2020.
