For current North American models, the evidence puts the CX-30, CX-50, CX-50 Hybrid and redesigned 2026 CX-5 in an average-reliability group, while the newer CX-70 and CX-90 warrant more caution. The available ratings do not support a precise first-through-sixth order: they use different methods and model years, and they do not cover every powertrain equally.
How the Mazda SUV reliability ranking works
This comparison covers the current North American Mazda SUV family represented in the available ratings: CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, CX-50 Hybrid, CX-70 and CX-90. It is a qualified ranking by evidence group, not a claim that all six were tested side by side.
Consumer Reports uses member surveys to estimate predicted reliability. Its 2026 summary says its reliability history draws on about 380,000 vehicles and examines 20 potential trouble spots. J.D. Power’s 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) measures problems reported after three years of ownership by owners of 2022 model-year vehicles; the study covers 184 potential problem areas across nine categories. J.D. Power model pages also publish a Quality & Reliability score. That score is not the same thing as the VDS result, and some model pages rely on prior-year ratings and review data. The scores below are useful context, but they are not a controlled, same-year comparison of every Mazda SUV.

Ranked by the strength of current evidence
1. CX-30, CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid: average, with no proven winner among them
Consumer Reports’ 2026 summary describes the CX-30, CX-50 and CX-50 Hybrid as average. That supports placing them in the stronger-evidence group, but it does not establish that one is more reliable than the others. The available information does not provide a complete, comparable breakdown by model year and powertrain.
J.D. Power gives the 2025 CX-30 an 80/100 Quality & Reliability score, labeled Average; its page notes that prior-year review data were used. 2. CX-5: about average is the forecast for the redesigned 2026 model
Consumer Reports expects the 2026 CX-5 to be about average, drawing on the previous generation and Mazda’s brand score. Because the 2026 model is redesigned, that estimate is context—not a record of long-term reliability for the new generation. 3. CX-70: a caution signal, not a long-term verdict
J.D. Power rates the 2026 CX-70 at 69/100 for Quality & Reliability, labeled Fair. This is a model-page rating, not the 2025 VDS three-year result for that vehicle. 4. CX-90: more caution, with an average model-page score
J.D. Power gives the 2025 CX-90 a 70/100 Quality & Reliability score, labeled Average; its page says prior-year ratings and review data were used. Consumer Reports’ current brand summary also says Mazda’s newer midsize SUVs have contributed to weaker predicted brand reliability results. Taken together, these are less settled signals than the average-group evidence above, but they do not establish the CX-90’s exact failure rate or make it directly comparable with the 2026 CX-70. J.D. In the 2025 VDS, Mazda recorded 161 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), placing second among mass-market brands. Mazda North American Operations reported that this was a 24-PP100 improvement year over year. Those are brand-level results across the study, not individual SUV scores, so they cannot override weaker or unsettled evidence for a particular newer model. J.D. J.D. Power’s study-wide results also show why new launches deserve a little extra scrutiny: 2022 models identified as newly launched averaged 241 PP100, compared with 196 PP100 for carryover models. That broad finding does not predict a specific Mazda’s dependability; it is context for treating a new generation as less proven than a mature one.
Mazda’s press release quotes its president and CEO, Tom Donnelly, saying, “We’re pleased to see Mazda’s commitment to quality and reliability reflected in our strong performance in this year’s J.D. How to use the ranking when choosing a Mazda SUV
- Match the model year and generation. A score for one model year may draw on previous-year reviews, while a redesign may have little long-term history.
- Compare like with like. Consumer Reports predicted reliability, J.D. Power’s three-year VDS, and a model-page Quality & Reliability score are different measures.
- Check the exact powertrain. Gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions may not share the same evidence. The available ratings do not support a complete powertrain-level ranking across these SUVs.
- Prefer model-specific evidence over brand averages. Mazda’s brand result is encouraging context, but it cannot settle the reliability question for an individual vehicle.
- Look for the rating’s label and basis. J.D. Power lists the CX-30’s overall consumer rating as 81/100, the CX-70’s as 76/100 and the CX-90’s as 77/100. These overall ratings include broader owner feedback; they are not the Quality & Reliability component and should not be substituted for it.
